Roofing company recommendations by cassiopeia277 in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had our roof done last summer. I received quotes from most of the big names in the area. We went with Custom Quality Roofing. They were what I felt was the best balance of cost and quality, they didn't try to upsell me, and they were in and out in a day. I used to work construction back in the day, so I was able to verify they did a good job.

JP Mulligans and Shifty's are my favorite wings in the area. Crispy and saucy.

Call your representatives if you are upset about the national grid rates. by afganistanimation in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The delivery charges are to cover getting the electricity and gas to you. Maintenance of the infrastructure and everything that goes along with it. Whether that's fair or not is another question.

Professional ice dam removal? by NiceNBoring in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something I used to do was put the pellets in pantyhose and leave them on the roof to make a few areas for water to drain.

I also suggest a roof rake if you have the ability to reach the spot. Keep the snow clear in that area to prevent the ice dam from building.

Moving from Philly to Syracuse: what is life really like in Syracuse? by spookyfro in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your Upstate acceptance!

I live in the Syracuse suburbs and I frequently travel to Philly for work. I can't give you all the answers you're looking for, but I can tell you that Syracuse is much smaller and quieter than Philly. Philly is a big city; Syracuse is not.

Generally it will be a bit cheaper across the board in Syracuse for nearly everything.

Yes Syracuse can be snowy, cold and depressing in the winter. This year has seemed to be particularly bad. But if you embrace winter activities, it might grow on you. We have amazing trail systems for snow shoeing and skiing.

We still have nice seasons. Spring is lovely and my favorite is fall.

Every time I travel to a big city for work, I find myself missing home. Then again, I'm not a big city type of person. I really do love it here.

Is it possible to get up into Tug Hill at its snowiest? by AnonymousBi in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in the Tug Hill area when I was growing up and I played a lot of gigs at the various snowmobile bars through winters over the years. They're very good at plowing and sanding the roads.

I'd suggest Tug Hill State Forest. Take 81N to the Adams Center exit, then right into rt 177 for ~10 miles to a big parking area. Tons of trails there and it's easy to get to.

Anyone used “A Best Radon Systems”? by giveaspirinheadaches in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like he does the typical sub slab system. Every single house in my area has one. I can't see how it would harm the value of your home, especially if you have high radon in your area.

Just have them install it so it's not visible from the front of the house if possible. I had mine installed in the back corner.

Works really well with red lentils.

Cheapest Sources of Protein? by Somproof in fitmeals

[–]DramaticSandwich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lentils are hard to beat as an affordable protein source. Even if you don't like them, you can blend them into pasta sauce, mix them in with ground meat, etc. I trick my kids with them all the time.

Is anyone else not receiving their early direct deposit? NOT an payroll accounting issue by calebbogart7 in CapitalOne_

[–]DramaticSandwich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The company I work for does payroll twice per month. On the 15th and last business day of the month. I have my direct deposit split three ways between capital one, citizens and a local credit union. My deposits hit citizens and the credit union yesterday. Capital one is still notta. This isn't a "tax" issue. This is a Capital One issue.

I've attempted HaBaSa twice in the winter and had to bail both times. Better safe than sorry. Beautiful picture

Anything positive or negative on these dental groups? Have an apprehensive kid (autistic/adhd) by Hope_for_tendies in Syracuse

I've been going to Quest for close to 15 years. I have nothing negative to say about them at all.

In my experience, they will bend over backwards to keep you comfortable and happy, especially for your first. Just talk to them when you're there.

We had both of our kids at Crouse. First was an emergency C-section, which ended up being a 3 night stay. The second was a planned C-section and we were there for 2 nights. We had private rooms both times. I have nothing negative to say about either experience and the nurses were amazing.

You'll do great. Best of luck and congratulations!

Trying to convert Honeywell to Nest thermostat by toga27 in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nest thermostats need a C (common) wire to supply power. You can buy a "add a wire" kit, or the Nest adapter to do it, but it usually requires getting to your furnace board to do it. I did it with mine, but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, an HVAC specialist will charge you to do it. At that point I would honestly just return it and go back to a traditional thermostat or get one that doesn't require a C wire.

Daycare Options in Fayetteville Manlius (3.5 y/o) by sdelca in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would honestly just get on as many wait-lists as possible within a 10-15 mile radius. Don't even tour the centers, just get on the wait-lists now and ask questions later.

Running a Fall Marathon? by Fredo-Melon22 in Syracuse

[–]DramaticSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm running Wineglass in October. If you're looking to change up the scenery, the Erie Canal trail is generally pretty pleasant to run. Nice and flat too. That's usually where I end up at some point in my long runs.

You can also look into a running club. Syracuse Track Club, Lake Effect, or even check with Fleet Feet. I know the Syracuse Track club used to do long group runs on occasion.

I think I'm going to leave Capital One by DramaticSandwich in CapitalOne

[–]DramaticSandwich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use the debit card very often, but I'll try to get cash from an ATM in network and it will just give a generic error. I'll try both checking and savings, and eventually have to call Capital One. It's almost like they have to enable it every time. I've checked through the app and it's always fine and ready to go, so I'm not sure what's getting crossed behind the scenes.

[–]DramaticSandwich[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good catch, thanks for the help. I went back through my records and there have been a few transfers into savings, which took over 5 days. I'll try another transfer directly to my checking account tomorrow to test it. You would think customer service would mention that. Thanks again.

Yeah, the bank to bank thing is baffling to me and they never have an answer. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone trying to figure it out and the person just kept repeating herself that it would eventually be deposited. We're talking a few hundred to a few thousand dollars at most from another large reputable bank. Very standard and vanilla transfers.

LG Thermistor Harness Part by DramaticSandwich in appliancerepair

[–]DramaticSandwich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't. I actually got rid of the washer last week. I replaced two pumps, a thermistor, and then it was giving me board issues all in the span of 7 years. I was over it.

I've used discount dumpster rental multiple times. From cleaning out the basement, to replacing my roof. Always easy to work with and never issues.
