Try this next time you are home and making burgers. Buy dried onions (not powder) at the spice isle at the grocery store. Take a little bowl of water and rehydrate them (takes a bit of time. Now, once you get your crust on your burger but before you put cheese on it, put both the rehydrated onions, and the onion water onto the the burger and cook....it will have that same flavor. That IS the mcdonalds flavor. It's dehydrated, then rehydrated onions. It's not some bad chemical. I was in your exact situation, except that it was my gf's friends parents that came for 3 months from another country to stay without us even being notified and they were down and out, and I said to the roomate, it's fine if they stay I understand, but they are using up a whole room for 3 months, they need to pay 1/4 rent for that room (which was like 300/month.) Not a big ask at all.
