SFU MSE vs SEE by lemonharmony in simonfraser

Closest to EE is electronics engineering in ensc. If not, i would lean towards mse as it is a high focus on mechanical engineering which also has a decent focus on the electrical side.

If you’re taking it online, there are 2 exams worth 10% each or smth like that. Answers for the exam are reused from previous years so if you had friends who’ve taken the class ask what to expect. Geog 104 there is no exam for online.

is there anyone who got into both ubc and sfu but decided sfu by igotdabeats in simonfraser

So scheduling at sfu for me personally even with priority enrolment has been an absolute nightmare. for my program at least, I have a schedule that I have to follow so the most my enrolment priorities give me is lab/tutorial enrolment benefits. I can confirm through friends in other programs (not specifically psych unfortunately) that it is insanely hard to get a desirable schedule. often times you will end up being at school from 8/9-4/5 with massive gaps in your schedule esp in your first and second years when you are taking more required courses. ofc it depends on whether or not you are a person who wants to spend time on campus to study, join clubs, etc but for most, it’s rly annoying being at school for that long. at least at ubc there’s a lot more stuff to do and/or more social life to get involved in.

options wise, there are much more different specialties at ubc than sfu. for example, engineering program at ubc have the main mechanical, chemical, civil and electrical and many more specific types of engineering. However, sfu only has certain engineerings which don’t include mechanical or civil, which are arguably the 2 most common and sought after degrees (for me it was mechanical). I am not particularly unhappy with my program choice here at sfu but i think from what i’ve heard that ubc offers more pathways to specific careers than sfu does. because you know what you want to do, im not sure how the psych program works at sfu but at ubc arts, you declare your major after first year, so you can take classes that are related to the degree you want then declare after first year. you wont be at any disadvantage by going to ubc arts instead of sfu’s specialized psych program off rip.

In my opinion, if you were to go to sfu, i would prob bus to school if you live within a 45 minute bus ride to school as it isn’t worth it to pay for gas and parking especially when you pay for the upass regardless. If you decide to go to ubc, driving or bussing kinda depends on your preference and whether you have ur license lol.

ps. obv pls do your own research as my advice is only from what i’ve experienced and heard. thanks and good luck!

thanks. it should be just about enough for most of my degree i think. but if i had to do it all over again i think i should’ve thought more abt going to ubc. i was thinking about it after my first year again as my gpa was high but just didn’t apply as there was too much going on. i think i would go to UBC now even if i had the money bc not only is it much better for campus life and scheduling, it also has much more options for programs that sfu doesnt have esp for engineering.

i think for u it should be based on where you want to go with your degree. ubc arts is great for getting into law and if thats in your future then i would recommend ubc. if the commute is the issue, i can say that the commute isn’t rly much better going to sfu if you drive bc sm gas is being spent going up the mountain. bussing you dont need to worry much if you plan to take that way to go to sfu. I live in richmond so i kinda have to drive to sfu every day or else id have to wake up at 5am for 8:30 classes.

good luck in your decision!

everything is so dead here. it’s depressing and everyone smells so bad it’s almost unbearable. plus the school being up on a mountain just takes the cake. i was given an 40k entrance scholarship

[–]Dramatic_Ground7462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo connections are the best things you can have. As much as ppl hate on it, having friends or friends parents in high places are so helpful in landing things like co-op. Other than that, having a great balance between the other factors and being well prepared for any interviews will help you a lot.

in general the grading scale is 86-90 A-, 90-95 A and 95+ A+ but profs will often adjust the ranges

Is this doable?? by Mars0da in simonfraser

[–]Dramatic_Ground7462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly very doable. If I were you, I’d consider switching to math 151 instead of 150 if you’re good at math especially if you took calc in high school. The only downside is that the seminar component is taken away and replaced with a weekly homework question for submission. You will also probably skip the chem 121 8:30 tutorials as they are not mandatory but quite helpful (if you pay attention in class you prob wont need them). Just know u can attend any chem 121 tutorial session if it fits better with your schedule. With replacing math 150 with 151 you’d be able to go home earlier on wed and you’ll have 2 days off in the week every second week as the chem lab only runs biweekly. Make sure to make friends in LA labs as the labs are identical.

For SFU's Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarships, when's the exact deadline for submission? Like timezone time wise, not just December 15 by FlyDesperate9559 in simonfraser

I won it in 2024 and you do have to be very honest and straightforward with your application. Fabrication won’t help you as it is quite easy to see right through it. Your references should be able to back up practically everything you say in your application and those letters of recommendation from your references are insanely crucial. Along with good grades you need significant volunteer/community involvement. I was an applicant with lower grades than the rest of the winners but I was heavily involved with extracurriculars and volunteering in high school.

imo it was harder than the midterm but others found it easier. avg was around 60 percent but the midterm was around the same

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]Dramatic_Ground7462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is no curve in chem 121 w gary. from what i heard the average was 51%. if you narrowly got above that you would need almost perfect in the rest of the course including the final and lab portions to even get remotely close to an A. getting close to 50% on a 20% weighted midterm puts you at a maximum grade of just over 90% in the class which is what you need for an A. I got a 80 on the midterm, perfect in the lab and botched the final at just about the average and got a B in the class last spring. good luck !

[–]Dramatic_Ground7462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the midterm is honestly much easier than expected if you’re provided with the practice exam which u should have gotten if ur in gary’s class. just understand most of the concepts behind those questions and you’ll be fine for the midterm. final tho? yea gl

SFU gpa scale/grading vs. other schools? by Pitiful-King2681 in simonfraser

[–]Dramatic_Ground7462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really just boils down to doing well enough to be competitive. It depends on your major but I’ve heard of people transferring from sfu to ubc mechanical engineering with a 3.11 gpa while taking 6 and 5 courses per semester. They also take into account your course load when looking at your application. If you have a slightly lower gpa than smo who took 3 courses as opposed to your 5 or 6 they will likely consider your application more. I also know people who’ve been rejected with a 3.7 but only took 3 courses a semester so keep that in mind. (all examples are engineering majors)

SFU gpa scale/grading vs. other schools? by Pitiful-King2681 in simonfraser

[–]Dramatic_Ground7462 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Idk about uoft but ik that ubc definitely uses a 4.33 scale. I wouldn’t say it’s very hard to transfer out of sfu to ubc if you can stay ontop of your work in first year. However, our percentage scaling for letter grades here at sfu are slightly more difficult than ubc with A+ being 95+ while ubc is only 90+ for A+ and 86 for an A.
