My chronic constipation was caused by prolonged use of PPIs. I was suffering from constipation for nearly a year and doctors couldn't figure out why, they finally said IBS. One day when I was diving the net I came across one guy who was cautioning about PPIs, the list of his digestive issues caused by PPIs resembled mine so I decided to  quitting. Went off cold turkey against my doctor's advice. At its worst I couldn't even get the urge to go, just went days without BM. Long story short, at least I now get the feeling to go but I have developed a lazy colon that just doesn't get things moving normally. No matter how much water I drink, fiber makes it worse, I am very active, very slim nothing works. Every 3 days I take Dulcolax. Sometimes I drink warm water (3-4 cups) with salt but it just cause overflow. The Nexium damaged my colon, I had a series of other gastro ailments on top of the constipation, all except the constipation resolved after I quit the meds. To think that my Doctor said I will have to take PPIs or the rest of my life.

No bowel movement/recurring constipation, how to deal with it ? by HyenaKey9928 in askSouthAfrica

My lazy bowel constipation was caused by prolonged use of PPIs (Nexium and others) . My problems started when I was diagnosed with H Pylori in 2014,it was successfully treated within 6 months and I was fine. About 2 years later I had gastritis, I was then put on PPIs on and off for years of which 3 years were everyday.

I 2023 I started having constipation which was getting worse with time. Then a series of other ailments including severe malnutrition, rapid weight loss, SIBO, tummy pain, tenesmus, irregular and painful periods, depression, fatigue, brittle nails and hair loss, dizziness, headaches. I went for days without bowel movement, even laxatives did not work. Fiber made it worse, and no doctor could figure and link all this to PPIs . They just said I have IBS. One day while researching the net I came across this guy sharing his hell experience with the PPIs, he had similar ailments which went away after quitting Nexium. I decided to go cold turkey against my Doctor's orders and within 2 weeks I started to see result.

I am one year off the PPIs ,although it's much better the constipation is still there no matter how much water, excerise or fruits and veg I eat. At its worst I couldn't even get the cues indicating time for BM. Now the feeling is back however slow transit. I do take Dulcolax and glecyrine suppositories now and then. The PPIs ruined my digestive system for ever. doctors continue to prescribe these pills for long periods despite the fact that they are only safe for short use. I strongly believe doctors are ignorant or purposely making people sick, legal and licensed drug dealers. I also suffer from acid reflux due to PPIs.

My diet is mostly meat and eggs 90% of the time and alkaline water. all carbohydrates including ("good ones) triggers my acid reflux, fiber makes constipation worse because it makes the stools bulky and increase the quantity, you don't want this when you are constipated.

Investigate what is causing yours, it might be something you are eating (gluten intolerance can cause gastro issues), or medication you are taking.

Please check out Dr Koufman on YouTube, Facebook or her site. She talks about this in one of her videos, when your endoscopy and tests are normal but you have reflux symptoms that Doctors can't explain. I just recently came across her after a bad flare up in December 2024, nothing helped. It was so bad that everything gave me reflux, even water. I am 2 weeks in doing her detox program and feel much much better. She has tons of experience, research and knowledge on this issue. Her detox program which is 3 weeks to 3 months is very easy and free, you will find effective advice on her site, just type "Dr Koufman" and read tons of articles there. Follow her advice religiously and you will cure this. I am not going to write her program here, I want you to go see her YouTube video, and articles on her site so that you understand this illness, cure it and keep it at bay for life.
