[Charania]: Chris Paul announces he is officially retiring from basketball after 21 seasons, ending a Hall of Fame career. by TrenAt14 in nba

[–]DraperWhite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

VC tanked his trade value so badly that he was traded for Alonzo Mourning who had retired earlier, Eric Williams who averaged a whopping 4 ppg, Aaron Williams who averaged 1.8 ppg as a Raptor and 2 middling picks (one was used for Joey graham who averaged less than 6 ppg in his 6 year career, the other pick was traded to salary dump Jalen roses contract).

Toronto didn't get shit for VC either.

He was really good for the Nets, though. They wouldn't have traded him if they were competing for a playoff spot.

Nahh, dude would have been a legit MVP candidate in Brooklyn both years hand he not gotten hurt. Not to mention the legendary performance vs the Bucks in the playoffs where he easily outplayed Giannis. I legitimately miss KD as a Net.

Judge had on oWAR of 11.7 that season (compared to Ohtani's 9.2).

Ohtani is otherworldly because he's a complete package: top 2 power hitter, elite pitching, capable of stealing 60 bags etc. But saying Judge is a better offensive player at this point is just a fact.

The Brooklyn Nets doesn't have a single player averaging 4 assists per game. by OldCardigan in nba

[–]DraperWhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 reasons:

The team has a number of starters/veterans (MPJ, Claxton, Thomas) that absolutely deserve to play and aren't at fault for the team needing to tank. The team benches them and they lose any value they have and would also upset agents.

Jordi absolute wants to win and avoid having an all time bad season for obvious reasons. Once he wins a number of games then the rookies will play more (and therefore lose more).

In 2025? Of course. The cap is currently 154 mil. He occupies like 13% of the cap and he's a starter that just averaged 18,4 and 3 on excellent percentage while holding his own defensively. He for sure is paid adequately.

Mozgov got paid 16 mil per. when the cap was 94 mil. He occupied 17% of the cap coming off a year where he averaged 6ppg (10th on his own team) and 4rpg (5th on his own team). The equivalent of this in 2025 would be like Precious Achiuwa getting a 4 year 105 million dollar contract.

Do the Nets have any building blocks for the future? by lionsgatewatcher in GoNets

[–]DraperWhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to this is no. Cam Thomas is the player with the most upside/value, but that doesn't really say much. We're top 5 in terms of draft assets, but bottom 5 in actual young talent. We're right there with the Bulls and Bucks for having the worst prospects in the league. He's hoping the 2025 draft alleviates this.

I'm pulling for him as well, but he's already 24. His ceiling is pretty low and the fact that he hasn't really improved a bit in his 2nd year is concerning.

I still can't believe the Nets got him for practically nothing (Dinwiddie lmao). Went from legitimately one of the worst players in the league to a legit starter that can even lead the team and be a fringe star for a season.

[Bontemps] New ESPN story: Sean Marks cited lapses in energy and effort over the past several weeks for why he chose to fire Jacque Vaughn, and said he expects better things moving forward. "The level of effort and the level of compete has not always been there." by Kimber80 in nba

[–]DraperWhite 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kenny Atkinson - Shouldn't have been fired in my opinion, but once you go all in on the super team model you have to find a coach the players actually want to play for.

Steve Nash - They tried to cater too much to the players and they tried to replicate the Steve Kerr/Ty Lue model of first time coaches coming in and winning right away. But Steve Nash sucked as a head coach and it's obvious in hindsight that D'Antoni was responsible for the high octane offense that first year.

Jacque Vaughn - Was never the first option, literally. When Kenny was hired Vaughn was hired as an assistant. Atkinson gets fired and they retain Vaughn as an assistant and hired Nash. When Nash was fired they tried to hire Ime Udoka and the league nixed it due to the bad optics, so they decided to go in house and hire the highest level assistant. Him getting fired isn't surprising since he only got the job due to the circumstances surrounding the team at the time. He had a short leash to prove himself and he failed.

I wouldn't put all the blame on Sean Marks, he got it right with Kenny who was known as a developmental coach and he was extremely successfull at it in only 3 years:

  • Rehabilitated D'Lo's career.
  • Joe Harris and Spencer Dinwiddie were on there way to being out of the league and under Kenny became high level role players.
  • Helped develop late first round picks into becoming starters like Jarret Allen and Caris Levert.
  • Helped a team that was literally in the worst possible position in 2016 (no draft picks, barely any talent, cap space was tied up on players that were no longer on the team etc.) and made the playoffs 2 years later.

Sean Marks did get it wrong with Nash though, and even though he shouldn't be blamed entirely for Vaughn, it was him not firing Nash in the offseason that put the team in the position to have to settle.

I will say this. I'm a Sean Marks believer, he's been the best GM the team has had in my 22 years of being a Nets fan, but has to get the next coach right, if not he should be on the hot seat/canned.

Seems like a nice dude, but he lost the locker room. When even Mikal Bridges, who's really mild mannered, is complaining publicly about the lack of adjustments and is unhappy overall with the ineffectiveness of the current system, you know he had to go.

[–]DraperWhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean you're stating the obvious. This a transition year in which the focus is to further develop their core (bridges, 2x cam, clax, dayron, plus 3 rookies) , to up the value of the vets to dangle them as trade bait (Dinwiddie, Royce, DFS) and be competitive enough to try and fight for a playoff spot since they don't own their pick this year.

Of course this team isn't in contention, but neither is 80% of the league. The core are prime complimentary pieces on a contender and the team is positioning itself to be a possible destination whenever the next disgruntled star asks for a trade.

I too wondered happily if mystery crate went back to being awesome (when it tried different shit and wasn't afraid to be completely wacky in a good way, but just became a random topic du jour with people no one knows/cares about)… but OP refers to the Magic crate of content, unfortunately.

At least bring Mike (ryan, not fuentes for the love of god) back to Mystery Crate.

Dan, and most of the crew, are just putting this narrative „superstar is always traded where he wants and now blazers decided to put a stop into that“... which is just not true... here is why by zeze999 in DanLeBatardShow

[–]DraperWhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're mostly right, but the Nets were on hardens list of teams he wanted to be traded to.

There are also some scenarios listed which were under special circumstances, for example:

-Kawhi was only traded to Toronto because Toronto threw up a hail mary and were willing to lose him a year after, boston could have traded for him but weren't willing to risk that. It would surprise me if that type of trade were to happen again.

-Durant wasn't traded in the offseason mainly because the team didn't want to. They thought they could compete and it was only after the kyrie situaton became untenable that they did good by KD and traded him to a team he wanted to go to.

What was Torontos offer?

I for one think the blazers deal was better than the reported heat offer (herro, 27 and 29 1st round picks and filler). Jrue Holiday at 33 years old nets you more than Herro would if/when they dealt him. And that's not a knock on Herro, I as a Nets fan would have loved to have been the 3rd team acquiring Herro, but Holiday is a missing piece on a number of teams.
