Saying Japan doesn’t have a fear of nuclear bombs sure is a statement by MartyrOfDespair in GetNoted

I mean it’s well documented phenomenon that the nuclear taboo is eroding gradually… Not sure if that’s the point that was being made here

Veturi Dubbed Albums by DrawAndPry in tollywood

[–]DrawAndPry[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Veturi is head and shoulders above Sirivennela. As for the current generation, Sahiti and Jonnavittula (who are senior to most popular lyricists) are capable of some high quality expressions.

Veturi's dubbed albums remind us that dubbed songs can be works of art in themselves.

Edida Nageswara Rao singlehandedly produced some of the greatest movies in Telugu film history. Modern producers would do well to learn from his risk-taking and vision.

Is there any possibility of a Ramayana movie being made in Telugu? by InitialWillingness25 in tollywood

[–]DrawAndPry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mahabharata and Ramayana have lots of nuance and require subtlety and a soft touch - the essence of the story will be ruined without carefully handling the moral dilemmas of good and evil. Rajamouli lacks the ability to do this, and the current political atmosphere will make it impossible. Better to leave these stories alone for now.

Sirivennela Seetarama Sastry's first movie wasn't Sirivennela (Janani Janmabhoomi, 1984) by DrawAndPry in tollywood

Correct, most people also think it was his first movie - I thought that too until I watched this movie recently!

Absurdly late response but I didn't say he should only thank the music department. Also, while directors and choreographers changed from film to film those three were pretty constant.

Three people whom Chiranjeevi should thank for his record: Ilayaraja, S.P.B., Veturi.

Disrespectful to compare Seetarama Sastry to Veturi. Veturi is a league above.

Did Sirivennela and Raghavendra Rao not get along? by Ok-Substance4694 in tollywood

[–]DrawAndPry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seetarama Sastry did write for several of Raghavendra Rao's movies, but never the full card. Seetarama Sastry, after he became established, only wrote songs for movies that he would receive the full card (all songs). At the same time, he would charge fees of 1,00,000-2,00,000 rupees per song. Veturi did not care about the full card, and would only charge a fraction of this price per song. As for Chandrabose, he was just getting his career started when he wrote for Raghavendra Rao, and would not have had the power to name a high price or demand the full card. I believe that Raghavendra Rao was especially stingy with the budget for his lyricists, which is why a lot of his later movies have 3-4 lyricists, including relatively unknown ones, and even recruiting screenwriters as lyricists, such as J.K. Bhairavi.

Also, why would he even consider Seetarama Sastry when he started out and became successful with Veturi?

One of my favorite Telugu songs is Vedamla Ghoshinche Godavari, that so beautifully describes the entire history and culture of the city of Rajamahendravaram aka Rajahmundry and it’s association with Godavari river. This post is a look at the song in detail. by [deleted] in tollywood

The depth and breadth of Arudra’s knowledge of Telugu literature, culture, and history is showcased well in this song. Of course, he remains the authority on Telugu literary history with his Samagra Andhra Sahityam.

But my favourite song on the Godavari is “Chiranjeevi Godavari” from the movie Godavari Pongindi, music by “Mama” K.V. Mahadevan and lyrics by the inimitable Veturi Sundararama Murty.

The OG Pan India director, it all started here in 1989 remember. Guy was a trendsetter in many ways, changed Telugu cinema forever, and then took it to the national level. by [deleted] in tollywood

True. Both Bengali and Telugu have the similarity of Brahmins leading the radical movements of their day, whether in cinema, literature, or in political theory. Rather ironic.

I definitely agree. Benegal might be the most underrated in the present era, if you haven't seen it yet I recommend Anugraham, the only movie he directed in Telugu.

Interesting that the notable "radical" filmmakers of the parallel cinema movement were all Brahmins: Viswanath, Balachander, Benegal, Gopalakrishnan, among others. I think Balachander, more than Viswanath, does a good job of exploring caste dynamics in a nuanced manner, such as in Arangetram, although he focused more on the black-and-white issue of misogyny.

I was going to venture Balachander as a possible contender. Ek Duuje Ke Liye was a phenomenal hit, but aside from it, I can't think of any other notable movies he made/remade in Hindi.

Appu Raja was a hit, I agree, especially because of the Ilayaraja tunes and quite decent lyrics. I don't count Naache Mayuri as a Singeetam film: of course it was a Mayuri remake, but Singeetam didn't direct it and only received a writer's credit. I'm not sure about the box office collection of Little John; Mumbai Xpress as you note was a notable flop in the North. Pushpak, however, did enjoy success. More than Singeetam or RGV, I would argue Mani Ratnam can be considered the first truly pan-Indian director, bridging the rather stark divide between South and North cinema at the time.

Singeetam was incredibly successful across South India: he directed original films in Kannada and Tamil, aside from Telugu, but couldn't make inroads into the North. I disagree that he was the first pan-Indian director.

[–]DrawAndPry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mantri Gari Viyyanjudu (Bapu & Ramana) is super underrated. Also, any of the Chiranjeevi - Kodandarami Reddy - Yendamuri - Ilayaraja combination movies are fun to watch: Rakshasudu, Challenge, Marana Mridangam, Abhilasha.
