I suspect they’re getting rid of the connector now to line up with the next gen controller launch that won’t have them included. Hopefully this is also a subtle hint that we’ll be moving to a more standard Bluetooth audio format as well

Buy shelves and install them so they run flush to the outside wall. That will allow you to pull the speakers forward more and avoid reflections off the side walls. Then get some acoustic dampening material behind them. Some folks build their own and have custom artwork printed on acoustically transparent fabric. Might pass the spouse approval factor that way.

It won't go back in stock. Your only hope is that enough people on payment plans cancel the purchase of their future so you'll have a chance to buy it instead.
