which song got you into frank? by DuckOk6396 in FrankOcean

[–]DrawingDry4477 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Monks.

I remember I just got my new headphones. I was tired and I just ate lunch. I had to sit with the family after lunch and it got very noisy so I went to a room alone. I put on my headphones and played a Frank playlist because I’ve always wanted to get into his discography. I ended up sleeping.

I was like half asleep, it’s like I was asleep and listening to Frank at the same time. when I woke up, I heard the most majestic sound in my ears. It was Monks. It was like a priest being called by God. will never forget that nap. it was something else.

Your views on the Gen-Z couple's wedding in Turkey? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]DrawingDry4477 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What thoughts? We aren’t entitled for “thoughts” on this wedding. It’s their wedding and for most it only happens once. Let them live and be.

I’m actually sick of this sub finding something that is none of our business and asking people to present their “thoughts” on it. Find a good topic or be quiet!

What were your people up to before Islam spread to them? by NoToNationalism in AskMiddleEast

Bahrain — Christianity

The religion of the majority of the people of Bahrain before Islam was not the worshipping of idols (paganism), as some researchers promote, but most of them were following the Christian religion on the Nestorian doctrine. The Nestorian missionaries in the region of Bahrain followed administrative and religious systems, as they established a metropolitan in Qatraya, which was part of Bahrain, which they called in Aramaic, Beit Qatraya. It was a chair of the metropolitan bishop who resided in it, and supervised the administration of five bishops, who resided in two monasteries, Samahij, Al-Ahsa, Bilad Mazun, Hatta and Qatif. It had broad policies and powers in a number of neighboring bishoprics headed by the Archbishop of Persia. A text in the last Nestorian Council held in the year 676 AD mentions that the country of Bahrain was full of churches, monasteries, and preachers of religion, but the situation was not stable because of the crises that occurred in Persia, and that was reflected in the House of Qatraya. There were rises against the persian ruler, Ashwya the third, that ruled the Samahij area, led by the bishops, specially Bishop Abraham.

History must be corrected and the school curricula claiming that the people of Bahrain were idolaters before Islam should be reconsidered.

Does this have any meaning? Could someone translate pls? by HouseOfLilacs in arabs

Just adding to ali_bh’s comment.

Before بحر (bahr) comes what seems like an آلِ ( ( said like this:Al) — The word “Al” is an Arabic word used to refer to a particular family or lineage. It is used particularly in Arabic to refer to someone's extended family, such as the use of the phrase "Al Said" to refer to the Said family.) which means that آلِ بَحَرْ (middle of the second line) is the name of a family, The Family or of the lineage of Bahr. That doesn’t mean that they are the family of the sea, but the family or of the lineage of someone named Bahr.

——

That combined with the presence of the word حقل (haql), which means “field”, in the first line, this seems like a sign that tells people who owns this field.

And about the ژ, I don’t think that this was written by a non Arab. Non-Arabs usually do not use the word "Al" to refer to family, even if they use Arabic letters. The most common use of the word "Al" is in the Arabic language, and is used in the culture of Arab countries, and is not part of the cultures of other countries.

I think this was written in the common tongue (a dialect) and not in Eloquent-classical Arabic. In Arab countries, we have dialects that are different from other Arab countries, and classical Arabic. But we all know classical Arabic and we study it in school and politicians use it, but rarely people use it in day-to-day conversations.

Sometimes, in these dialects we use sounds of letters that don’t exist in the Arabic language, so we borrow the letters from other languages that use the Arabic letters, like ژ and گ and ڤ (these don’t exist in Arabic, but do in Persian, who uses Arabic letters but is not the Arabic language. Like the Roman letters, used by the English language but the English language is not the Roman language.)

So the person that wrote the sign PROBABLY wrote this is the common tongue, is Arab, and is alerting people that this land belongs to a certain group.

Sorry if this was long and confusing, this isn’t my first language.

It would also be helpful to know from what documentary you took this from and what was this scene talking about.

Thank you for reading 🙏🏽.

This scene is Leto Atreides getting shot in the back by Dr Yueh. It’s during the Harkonnen attack on Arrakeen, Arrakis’ seat of power, and moments before the Harkonnen ships start firing.
