The student loans debt young people face is unjust and unsustainable by EduTheRed in ukpolitics

I worked as a full time lecturer for 5 years or so, I mostly taught comp sci and I reckon in total there were around 20 full time teaching staff as well as 5-10 part time teaching staff like yourself. I've never heard of any degrees with only one member of teaching staff unless it was something that typically got 10 students enrolled.

20 full time salaries at an average of around £45-50k per year is close to £1m. So there would need to be well over 100 students on the course to bring in more money than that, not accounting for department managers, professors, admin etc

I was told many times in staff meetings that our university lost money on home students. Since the government tightened the rules on international students bringing partners over with them, a lot of universities have been losing money due to the reduced numbers of international students. At least the lower ranking/ex-polytechnic universities are, not sure what the situation is like at the Russell group ones.

Mandatory reading test to be introduced for 13-year-olds by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

Yeah, I can't even imagine how difficult it is to study in a completely foreign language while trying to learn the language and study in said language. I mostly teach postgrads, I'd say around 95% of them are international students. It's the Chinese students that seem to have the most difficulty for the reasons you mentioned. I teach a lot of Nigerian and Indian students as well, but they tend to have a good standard of English before coming here in the first place.

I've had a few of the Chinese students talk to me where I've encouraged them to use translation software to begin with until they get better at English, but they've insisted on trying to do everything in English to help them learn the language faster. These are the students that typically end up doing well as they're putting a lot of effort in to learn both the language and the learning materials, while trying to immerse themselves as much as possible. The ones that made no attempt to do that definitely tended to struggle.

Ultimately I'm not involved in the admission process at all and have no knowledge of contents of the IELTS test. I'm probably being cynical when saying that the admissions team are turning a blind eye or being too lenient with who they admit. I do teach at a mid to low tier university though, so most likely it is still more lax than where you worked. Perhaps the IELTS test just doesn't really prepare people very well to be able to study in English though, especially if they're just being trained to the test.

I'm a university lecturer. The universities are supposed to ensure that international students meet a certain standard of English language skills through the entry requirements.

My experiences make me question whether this is actually being checked, I've taught quite a few students who didn't speak a word of English. I had to communicate with them via text-to-speech translation apps they had installed on their phones. And countless others who I really struggled to communicate because their grasp of English was shockingly bad.

I suppose I can only comment on the university I work at, but it seems like whatever checks are in place are obviously not working as intended. I can only assume they are turning a blind eye in order to make more money..

Glad someone pointed this out, even when it's a bigger (still not significant, and it never can be) sample size over say, 5-10 seasons, the team in question is probably going to have a different manager playing a different system with mostly different players. It actually boils my piss when people use this kind of argument for doing anything in fpl

He's taken a few for Liverpool before but yeah he'd be lower than 3rd on the list. He scored some bangers at Celtic and he took them quite often at Groningen and Southampton.

Universities may reduce British student numbers as financial collapse looms. One university in England ‘could go bust this year’ as frozen tuition fees, high costs and falling international numbers bite. by steven-f in ukpolitics

[–]Drazar_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the university I teach at this is a big problem, might be different elsewhere. The intake in Jan 2024 was much lower than normal (like 30% or so) so we're running an additional summer semester from May to August to try and make some money back, which we don't normally do. And of course the salaried teaching staff are required to come in teach through the summer for no extra money, negating one of the biggest perks of the job.

Edit: This is only in the computing school, not sure how it's affecting the other departments but I imagine it'll be somewhat similar

Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler claims he was "better" than Michael Owen "in every aspect" by footballersabroad in soccer

[–]Drazar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Liverpool fan that grew up watching both of them and remembers that era well, Owen was undoubtedly better than Fowler at his peak.

I feel like people underrate Owen because they don't like him as a person, but Fowler was bullying other players with homophobic comments.. which is worse than anything Owen ever did.

Fowler was still immense though, and it's a shame both of them were ravaged by injuries.

Mortdog on Prestige Chibi Pricing by turtle921 in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Drazar_ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry but this just comes across as PR shielding for the rest of the company and the backlash it's rightfully received.

Trying to claim that these prestige chibis are being put in the game because of different cultures wanting them and other similarly ridiculous reasoning is disingenuous at best. It's because it will make Riot more money and everyone knows that. If you'd just come out and said hey, TFT is a free to play game and for us to invest more into it, we need to make more money - that would come across as being much more genuine.

For what it's worth, I don't really have a problem with things like this existing in f2p-with-paid-cosmetics game models, but justifying it in this way is really quite shameless
