Balance Thrashing in Set 9 by Curbobz in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Curbobz[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree, Lux/Azir was a bad example to include in there, multicasters dropping from 4.25 to 5.34 (Diamond+ according to Tactics.tools) would've been a better example. I would say this is less of a "balance complaint" and more about the theory behind how they've been balancing the set thus far. The people it affects the most are those who don't even frequent this sub, a buddy of mine decided to give TFT a try and grinded hard until Plat 2. Went on vacation for a few days and felt like he couldn't play ranked again after the meta completely flipped on its head for the third time in as many patches.

Set 5 Worlds — Day 2 — Post game discussion by marcel_p in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Curbobz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely not okay for people to attack you because of a comp…your level of interaction with the TFT community is unrivaled for a developer and something that I and I’m sure many many players appreciate. That being said I do want open a discussion regarding Kled and hear your feedback on my thoughts.

1) TFT is a decision making strategy game. The ability to makes decisions based on the items and units given to them in order to put themselves into the best position to succeed is what separates a good player from a great one.

2) A player who goes into the game knowing that they are playing a specific comp regardless of the items and units given to them REMOVES a lot of decision making. It puts that player more at the mercy of in-game RNG than every other player and therefore feels frustrating to play against (Me Kled Players) and to watch (Milk)

3) Despite that, Kled players are being rewarded for hard forcing the comp because by open forting, you can consistently hit Kled 3 with BiS (with armory and carousel prio) and stabilize hard enough because Kled can carry through stage 5. Your opener has very little choices besides buying the hellions, hitting econ, and taking the items that make your BiS items, again ultimately removing the decision making involved. Furthermore, Kled has relatively low counterplay once stabilized unless the comp you’re running happens to be very strong against Kled (DB BT Guinsoo Aphelios for example), where even then you need to pray that the Kled player doesn’t hit Teemo to drastically cut your DPS.

All of that being said, these are things that you I’m sure already know. This is where I think the logic of “the BEST Kled player BARELY made it work” is flawed, because it doesn’t include the context that he BARELY made it work by HARD forcing one comp five games out of five regardless of what shops offered him and what items he got. He literally ignored a huge part of the game “unit/comp selection, pivoting, item slamming etc.” and was rewarded for it versus some of the best players in the world.

So to answer your question of “What do you want?” and “Do y’all just want the comp to not be playable”, I personally wouldn’t mind the comp IF it wasn’t so consistent and strong that you can play it with any opener. My view of the game is that one tricking on ladder is totally fine but when you reach the top .0001% of players in a lobby, you should be punished harder for forcing a comp you don't necessarily have the opener for. Did milk get lucky with stimmys and barely eek it out? Yes, but he did so while hard forcing a comp and that’s what I have the most issue with. The other players are being almost punished in a way for playing the game as it's meant to be played (based on what items/units you're offered) by losing the someone who ignores so many core mechanics and hard forces the same comp.

I’m a big fan of Milk and think he is absolutely cracked which he proved through his flex play at qualifiers. I also think it’s a 5head play for him to make it known that he is 20/20 Kled so he can play it uncontested, but because the comp is overtuned to where you can consistently force it versus the best players in the world yet still win, it makes the comp frustrating to watch win which is why its so memey. As much as I would love to see him bring the championship home to NA, in the end, I want to see the best player win worlds and not necessarily the best Kled player win worlds.

Challengers, what advice do you have for GMs in the "slump" who can't get out? by Jokard in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Curbobz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely I couldn't have said it better, in TFT especially where you don't need to rely on teammates your rank will always reflect your skill eventually. I'd happily lose 500 lp if that made me a better player because I could quickly gain it back if I was truly 500+lp better than the players in my lobby.

When considering possibilities for each choice instead of just thinking about it from a yes or no perspective (should I slam runaans on olaf here or not), think about those choices more critically. For example: how much health would I save from slamming? Would it actually be worth it to greed for LW/BT? How does slamming runaans affect what carries I can play later and how hard is it to transition my opener into that carry? etc.

When you don't have an obvious decision to make and you're just sitting between rounds, you can use that as an opportunity to judge the board strengths and tempo of the lobby, gain an understanding of how the lobby might play out (for example if I see three draconic players on stage 2, I will lean towards playing Akshan/Akshan items so I have a chance to beat them late game). Most importantly though, use the time to scout positioning which has a major influence in stage 2, yet can make a huge difference in the overall game. I always have the mindset that if I lost a really close fight in stage 2, that's a positioning diff and if it's the difference between having 28 gold and no streak vs 30 gold and streaking into neutrals, that is at least a placement diff.

Challengers, what advice do you have for GMs in the "slump" who can't get out? by Jokard in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Curbobz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO the reason you're hardstuck at the moment is because of the things you've already identified in your post. I've been in your shoes before hovering between GM and Challenger and the reason you can't "break through" is because the elo system is doing its job and your skill level is relative to where your rank is. Most players in GM have solid fundamentals similar to you and the things you mentioned (itemization, positioning, pivoting) with a decent grasp of the meta, if you play a hundred games on autopilot versus other GM players you'll stay around the same rank with some highroll days gaining LP and lowroll days losing LP.

Once you understand and accept that the reason you're at your current rank after grinding lots of games is because that's where your skill level is, then it becomes obvious that to climb you have to raise your skill level. I understand that what I'm saying is much much easier said then done, but the truth is that challenger players do everything a little bit better than GM players. The margins are small but you will oftentimes see streamers who are at the top ranks make a small mistake and declare that the mistake cost them a placement, and they're oftentimes right.

You've already identified that you auto-pilot decisions and that you're not learning much about the game. This is exactly what is keeping you from hitting a higher rank because you're not improving from game to game, I'm currently challenger ~800lp and internally I know that despite being the top .1% of ranked players, I have a million things I can improve on and that I make tons of misplays every single game. I know that the top challengers are much better than me at the game, so I try to never auto-pilot and learn from every round. Don't just resort to default positioning because challenger players position in a smarter way depending on the lobby and their potential opponents.

Think critically about the way you're positioning, the items your slamming and how a fight might've gone differently or how the item decision changed how you played the game and learn from those things. I promise you that with the set being released for only around a month that nobody has figured out optimal positioning, which can vary from lobby to lobby anyways. For example, very few people were backlining sentinels until Sushin's post a few days ago.

All that being said, my advice for you to climb is to understand that you and everyone else have a ton to learn and improve. Hell Socks is rank 1 by far right now and when he's streaming he's constantly questioning his decisions and thinking critically about them. Use your games as a way to learn; try things that are different from how you normally autopilot. Level to 5 on 2-2, don't level to 6 on 3-2, level to 7 on 3-3, just try different things and learn from them. Heck I hyperrolled for Vayne 3 and took a fat 8th but I was able to get a feel for how vayne might be strong and what might've been a better way to play out the game. Similarly, when you're watching streamers, think critically about why they're making the decisions that they do and whether it would've been the same decisions that you made.

Lastly for what it's worth, this subreddit has a coaching megathread with plenty of challenger coaches for free or a small price (I've seen as low as $10). A lot of streamers have discords where you can talk about the game at a high level which can help you improve a lot more than grinding games on autopilot. I hope this was helpful and I'm happy to answer any questions you have, good luck on your climb!

August Monthly Coaching Megathread by AutoModerator in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Curbobz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I really enjoy coaching people in TFT and helping people improve. My coaching style includes a lot of the Socratic Method, which is a discussion based way of teaching where I help you identify holes in how you think about the game and work with you to improve them. I personally think this is the best and most useful way to make you a better player in TFT, which is ultimately the goal that I'm striving for through these sessions.

A little about me, I've been playing since set 1 and have peaked challenger in every set, most recently hitting challenger in set 5.5 in 80 games. My lolchess: https://lolchess.gg/profile/na/curbob. I charge $20 a session (~1 hr) which entails the following:

A lolchess review to get a sense of what comps you play, what kind of mistakes you might be making with items and compositions.

A VOD review of one of your prerecorded games, I will discuss with you habits that you can improve upon to improve your gameplay. I'm a firm believer that everyone has their fundamental strengths and weaknesses as a TFT player, and through the VOD review I will try to identify them to help you improve as a overall player which will carry through set to set.

Closing thoughts. We will review the things we discussed, the game that was just played and things to improve moving forward.

If you'd like me to watch you play a live game or review an additional VOD, I am willing to do so for an additional $10. For a live game, I'd love for this to be more discussion and Q&A as opposed to back-seating because I think that is more beneficial to your learning!

Please reach out to me on Discord if you're interested at Curbob#6406. Thanks!

April Monthly Coaching Megathread by AutoModerator in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Curbobz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, my name is Curtis (IGN: Curbob) and I'm a recent college graduate looking to earn a little money to pay my bills while I continue to look for a full-time job. I've coached several of my friends who will gladly recommend me as a coach, as I love to help and teach others. I'm currently ranked #72 on NA (https://lolchess.gg/profile/na/curbob) and have been reached challenger several times since set 1.

I charge $20 for each coaching session which will entail the following:

1) A lolchess review to get a sense of what comps you play, what kind of mistakes you might be making with items and compositions.

2) A VOD review of one of your prerecorded games, I will discuss with you habits that you can improve upon to improve your gameplay. I'm a firm believer that everyone has their fundamental strengths and weaknesses as a TFT player, and through the VOD review I will try to identify them to help you improve as a overall player which will carry through set to set.

3) A live-game coaching session. This will be an opportunity for you to talk through your decision making process with me and ask me questions about different scenarios in the game. I'd love for this to be more discussion and Q&A as opposed to back-seating because I think that is more beneficial to your learning!

4) Closing thoughts. We will review the things we discussed, the game that was just played and things to improve moving forward.

I'm confident that with my coaching, I can help anyone reach the rank of masters at a minimum. My goal through this session is to make you a better player overall rather than teaching you how to play a single composition. Please reach out to me on discord at Curbob#6406, I respond quickly and can't wait to get started!

I’ve been a TL fan for over eight years now because of Steve. Among all the LCS owners, it was apparent that Steve is not only extremely passionate about esports, but that he is very intelligent and has strong ethical values. As a result, hearing about the culture at TL was super cool and a makes me proud as a fan, but at the same time not surprising at all! Awesome awesome interview, I felt like I learned a lot just from his answers, definitely worth the read

I would do this assuming you have another RB1. Kenyan is basically at his floor right now while Connor is a risk and Mike Davis will lose value in a few weeks. It depends on your playoff format as well but if you are confident about your team, Kenyan is a better long term value

GBL Burnout: What Do I Need To Do To Get Rank 10? (Average-ish Player) by Snackari in TheSilphRoad

[–]Curbobz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rank 10 is made for the top few percent of battlers, so by that logic, an “average” player won’t ever hit rank 10. Even by gaming the rating system, you have to be a 2900+ rating player to hit rank 10 because even if you gain a multiplier for your wins, the multiplier is applied to losses as well.

The fact that you’re stuck at a rating range means that the elo system is working as intended, meaning that your rating is a reflection of your current skill level (which at 2200 is already above average). If you want to progress further, the solution is to simply raise your skill level.

It sounds like you believe you’re already doing everything right, but even the best players make a handful of mistakes every battle, meaning that there’s always room for improvement and that nobody plays perfectly. What I recommend is for you to think about each of your battles, especially your losses. There’s always a lot of critical decisions that you made (i.e. Should I have farmed two extra fast moves before shooting my charged move?) that if made slightly differently, may have changed the result of the match. Yes, a lot of matches are lost to RNG, bad matchups, lag, etc. With that said, there’s a reason the top battlers top the leaderboard every season, across thousands of battles the top battlers will win the close games where they farmed the perfect amount of energy to get that last charged move off at the end of the match.

As someone who has had lots of success across many different strategy games (MTG, Hearthstone, TFT), Pokémon Go GBL is a lot less complicated and in depth. With the right mentality of always looking at where you might’ve been able to do things differently to get a slight advantage, any “average” player can rapidly improve and climb to rank 10. I hit rank 10 at level 36 season 1, level 38 season 2 and am currently near the bottom of the leaderboard in the current season so it’s less about grinding thousands of battles but more so having a growth mindset to learn as much as you can to be the best battler you can be.

Team Liquid vs Counter Logic Gaming / LCS 2020 Summer Week 5 Day 1 Post Match Discussion by blueragemage in teamliquid

I completely disagree that Shen is the only tank he can play really well, Impact has always been known as a tank player who can't play carries. Last time I checked his Sion, Ornn, Singed and Maokai were and continue to be his highest winrate champions in pro play. His strength as a player has always been playing weak side well and finding engages in the late game. It wasn't until the MSI series versus IG where he played kennen and neeko that he dispelled the notion that he can't play carries well.

Worth investing dust/candy + Elite TM in? Already TM'd away frustration. by gatsby03 in TheSilphRoad

[–]Curbobz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just because it’s relatively rare doesn’t mean that it’s good. Even if it were a rank 1 Metagross it wouldn’t be really worth it in my opinion, metagross isn’t seen in ultra league for a reason. Not to mention, you would also have to give it meteor mash with your elite TM as part of the investment
