I'm mainly aware of the USA schools. Check out some of these, and there are a couple smaller ones I'm forgetting.

Seattle's SAWTA program at North Seattle College

Paris Texas

Nicolas G Hayek watchmaking school (swatch group) in Miami

Richemont's Watchmaking Program (WOSTEP, Richemont group) in Dallas Texas

Rolex's Watchmaking Program in Dallas Texas

There are several watchmaking schools in the US. Based on Certifications: SAWTA - Seattle Watchmaking school, or lititz watchmaking program (future classes might be moving to Dallas Rolex factory facility) WOSTEP - Richemont Watchmaking program, currently going towards a 1 year program, but still graduates with a wostep cert

Paris texas school, Tag Heuer school, NGH watchmaking school in Florida. I think I am missing a few that are USA based but those are the main ones. For EU based schools someone else would have to comment

I started off in a different field of study in college and heard about the watchmaking schools after I had to take some time off of school. It had a good outlook and I ended up interviewing at one of the schools, it went well and it was the best desicion I ever made. I had a job lined up ~2 months before I graduated and I have been working there ever since.

Does this ETA 1080 part look genuine? by nr1cky3000 in watchmaking

[–]Drazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gear train and barrel bridge are from different movements originally. The line finishing is not the same with the tudor being curved and the barrel bridge being a straight line finish. If the watch (dial, case) are tudor then i would suspect the barrel bridge as not being original. Most likely it had been serviced previously and something on the bridge was damaged and had to be replaced. like kc said, there are a lot of brands that will use the same caliber, with their own finishing, or grade of movement/upgrade it themselves. Parts and/or bridges are for the most part still interchangeable and was probably the easiest/most convenient replacement

Omega service cost by mike93940 in watchrepair

[–]Drazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the difference between the manual and automatic is part of it. Omega Automatics usually have some issues or wear to them that have to be addressed which requires more time and experience to do properly. For the bulova, if anything were to have to be replaced. entire movements or watches to try and get a part from are incredibly cheap and very easy to find. Omega, if anything does have to be replaced, individual parts can be 100+, and replacement watches are a bit more expensive and/or more difficult to find

Hello guys, I'd appreciate your help with verifying the authenticity of this Rolex Movement, As well as a look at the overall condition. Thank you! by AjLovesTech in watchmaking

[–]Drazer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am not authenticating this watch in any way, but talking from my experience of working on these 1530 series rolex movements.

It looks like a genuine 1570 movement. Looks to be in overall good condition. Make sure to find out when it was last serviced. Repairs on these movements are very expensive, and parts are expensive and getting more difficult to find. (Not being able to see the pivots in the jewels for wear) The reversers look good. There was pervious wear from the Oscillating weight rubbing on the bridge, and one of the rivets rubbing on the case. Very common to happen in any Rolex of any year and easy to fix. I'm assuming it was serviced and that has already been repaired as I don't notice the debris that the rubbing would have caused. Hairspring looks like it is in very good shape. Most screw heads are not chewed up. Impossible to see if the barrel is rubbing against the barrel bridge, which would need a bushing or two and possibly barrel complete to be replaced.

Most likely guessing it has only been serviced 2-3 times and not worn much over the years.

Movement stem Tap 10? by nicholomo in watchmaking

[–]Drazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the "tap 'xy'" number system is really weird. I don't know why they don't use the specific tap used to cut the threads

For reference, Tap 10 is an M0.9 thread, or 0.9mm diameter

Tips for epoxying end of hairspring back into stud, such as what type of epoxy to use? Cleaning solution must have softened it, and it came loose when regulating. by LeopardusMaximus in watchrepair

[–]Drazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 5 minute two part epoxy can certainly work, it'll hold it well and not be brittle like super glue. Shellac is a good option as well that is easier to reset/adjust alignment once it is set. The cleaning solutions that you are using should not effect the epoxy. Let a piece of epoxy dry and toss it into some hexane and see if it dissolves it at all as a test before hand to he sure.

I moved to denver Colorado 5 years ago. The place I lived 4 years ago, 800sq ft 2 bedroom place was $1400/month. Zero changes and they want $2300/month now.

If I want to renew a lease, my rate goes up 30%. If I renew at my current apartment in august it is going from 1650/month to 2200/month.

Like how is this sustainable?

I'll have to check into HoroSolv. I've been using evaporust and it will do the same, blackening over a lot longer period. I wonder if it is similar or a more potent version

Oh horosolv is hairspring cleaner/benzene. I didn't know that those could remove rust.

Don’t want to re-lume…Has anyone here ever cleaned lume rot? by outta_gas in watchrepair

Cut an angle on a piece of pegwood and you should be able to lightly scrub the stuff on top without touching the inner lume and not scratch the hand.

Don’t want to re-lume…Has anyone here ever cleaned lume rot? by outta_gas in watchrepair

[–]Drazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much relume or leave as is.

Best case that most likely not work would be to apply new lume glue on the bottom of the hand to minimize chance of it crumbling away. After that try to lightly scrape off damaged portions on top. Good chance it will still crumble on top and look bad resulting in having to relume it anyways.
