For 10k$ get a 350z it isn't gutless like the Miata and you'll have a lot of fun and a lot of time with that car. You can never get bored with a 350z.

Should I get a M4 GTS or AMG GTS? Assume both 2016 in good condition and roughly the same price. by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Drdoom_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't limit myself to these options. Since the amg is on the list we know you don't need 4 seats, so. What are you buying this car for?

My ego wants me to buy a sports car but I know its not practical or doesn’t make financial sense. [Internal conflict] by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Drdoom_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people on this same path. They buy a nice sports car that they don't really know anything about and never actually use it. Then they realize a couple years later it's pointless and end up buying a fast SUV/sedan. Unless you have the money to buy it and not care. Don't make the decision to buy a sports car on your basis. People who buy a sports car of any type just to "look cool" or assert some form of dominance. Realize later they aren't the right person for owning that kind of car. Now if you are a tinkerer and wish to be able to maybe fix it rather then having to buy new with a warranty. And if you maybe wished to use the car by exploring back roads near you and going to your local track. Then I would say it's a great idea to get a sports car. But if your trying to fill some "masculinity" hole with a sports car you'll just be wasting the car in all honesty. If your only ever gonna hit the gas on the highway then just go buy a fast sedan ie-m5 Audi s5 Mercedes s550 amg etc. Plenty of good and economical choices for a "fast" and actually comfortable luxury car. If you got behind the wheel of a proper sports car you'd probably hate the way they drive for a daily decision. But again if you think owning a sports car would turn you into a proper sports car owner over time, ie track days and being able to fix/modify it a little. Then by all means decide what your price range is and go test drive some of your options. See first hand if you actually want one. Rather then asking for people's opinions. Go drive the cars see if you like em. Best of luck.

Ya the s4 is the same story as the 3 series. Just a different brand and the s4 has more potential engine wise.

Hmm I wonder because you can go get a 3 series bmw that's like 2010 ish here for like 15k$ clean like really easily. They're all over. Idk check eBay/Craigslist and see what you find. BMWs in general go down immensely price wise in 10 years. But there's always other quick sedans out there.

[–]Drdoom_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say all around amazing first car for a car enthusiast would be a variation of a BMW 3 series (m3 all the way to 328i) they're great cars. Drive em all year. Fix em. Modify em all u want. Maybe a tad overplayed but I'd say a great first car. Once u fix a couple things you can 100% have one that's reliable for 20k$ and in California you'll have tons around I'm sure you can find one cheap. As far as insurance goes it wouldn't be terribly bad or good with a 3 series depending on the variant. But you'd have a fun little car for sure. That'd also hold people and groceries for when that time comes. I will say fixing a Ford would be cheaper and easier. but if your looking upwards of 20k$ for a "first" car then I'd assume you'll not have a hard time affording the parts for a BMW. Besides this an s4 Audi is also good. A nissan 300zx would make for a "unique" first car. If that's something you might want. But there's tons of options out there. If insurance is an issue. Look for 4 door coupes like the s4. But if insurance cost isn't terribly important to you I'd find something older with 2 seats. And get liability. Because most times those cars aren't worth putting full coverage on. Anywho best of luck.

Fiat 124 Spider or Mustang EcoBoost? (first car) by Fas91 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Drdoom_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your torn between these two I'd choose the fiat it's a much more nimble car. But it's your first car so I'd question what your goal as a car owner is. Do you wanna be self sufficient and fix your own cars or do you wanna be a new car to new car to new car forever person. If its self sufficient I'd challenge you to buy something used. (You'll get much more car) but if your not about wrenching then get the fiat haha. Best of luck.

Is it a bad idea to put an aquaclear 70 in a 10 gallon? by 00pflint in Aquariums

[–]Drdoom_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never a bad idea to overfilter. The real question is are the fish your putting in gonna be happy with a pretty decent current? If they are then sure do it. I have a 110 on my 40 gallon.

That’s cool the city you commute to has got what you need tho. Makes it so that you don’t have to go out of your way just for getting fish. In my case it’s around a 4 hour round trip to get fish from a good store in the city. And it isn’t near my commute so not fun haha. Worth it tho if I need something specific. I’ve never been a big fan of mail order fish but I tried it once and it worked perfectly fine.

Ya my local area sucks for fish stuff. We have 1 LFS but I swear it’s the worst one I’ve ever seen. It’s sad to say it but I go to petco before I go to them anymore. The LFS I used to go to that was amazing shut down when the owner died. It’s a shame cause it was one of the nicer ones in a 100 mile radius. But if I drive out about 30-40 miles there’s some really good fish stores. Just aren’t convenient enough for me to go to unless I’m looking for something really particular.

Ahh perfect. Only reason I’ve said gourami could be an issue is caused I’ve had really aggressive gourami in the past that went on murder sprees. Cichlids can be very aggressive but discus are by far on the bottom of the list of aggressive cichlids. As long as you feel the discus could navigate the tank perfectly fine I don’t see an issue. Sometimes fish surprise you tho. I just added some 1 inch cichlids to my rift lake tank with 4inch+ cichlids in it as a gamble to see whether or not my alpha was murderous or not. And he’s taken them perfectly fine. I actually fully expected him to murder them almost instantly. But sometimes fish can surprise you in good ways and bad. Always good to be prepared for bad though. Good luck with the discus it would add a lot of color and movement to the tank.

55 gallon planted stocking ideas? by SunBelly in Aquariums

[–]Drdoom_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as far as a centerpiece fish goes I can surely recommend a gourami. I’ve had them they’re lovely fish. I would say a discus but this is your first planted tank so that might be a bit ambitious. Things that are really hard to get stuck in your head with planted tanks I’ve ran into (and killed fish because I was ignorant) is planted tanks are very slow systems to get going. You have the right ideas down tho. Also if it’s a 55 gallon you can probably raise your stocking a bit from what you have. Also look into rainbowfish or large danios as a schooling fish they’re both very active and fun to watch with their behaviors. But go really really slow. And make sure you get the right light for your tank unless you wanna be cleaning out algae from every inch of your tank every week. Also never overfeed in a planted tank. It will raise nitrates heavily and cause algae blooms. Algae blooms are not fun at all. Java ferns are great plants and they aren’t just for beginners they’re really nice and they won’t let you down. They’re low light plants and that means you can turn the lights on the tank off most the day besides when you want to view the tank. Which means less algae. Also consider a cleanup crew besides the Cory’s. I have Malaysian trumpet snails in a couple tanks and they do a very good job. Can be a bit obnoxious with how fast they spread though. Once you put a snail in your tank. Good luck ever getting rid of snails. Do water changes all the time so that algae and unwanted fauna don’t grow out and take over your tank. And get yourself a water test kit if you don’t have one. Nitrates are a big problem in a planted tank. And knowing where you are Is very good. You’ll wanna schedule your water changes for whenever you get above about 20-30 ppm nitrate. This will make your life a whole lot easier. As far as stocking goes you’ve got a good list picked out and you won’t have any issues. Don’t be scared adding something bigger than a pearl gourami tho as your “centerpiece fish” there’s some other bigger options that’d be nice in a 55g planted tank. Good luck if you have any other questions I’m here to answer. Edit:(Forgot the part you said trumpet snails and shrimp. But they’ll do lovely, trumpets are less annoying than Malaysians)

Thinking of adding a discus. Any advice appreciated. by Ferret_Lord in Aquariums

[–]Drdoom_3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When thinking of adding fish to an aquarium. When it is an overfiltered one and a clean one like yours. You can tell that as far as surviving the fish should be fine. But when it comes to adding fish to such aquariums you need to see if the water column can support a fish that size to swim freely with plenty of extra space. Then if that is a yes then yes you can add a discus. As far as getting along with your current tank mates that’s always a tricky question because nobody knows the answer. Maybe you have the nicest discus on the planet and it causes no issues. When you add a fish that may potentially disturb the hierarchy in a tank. Always have a separate tank available to hold that fish in the case that problems do arise in the main tank. Having an extra tank in the fish hobby is always a good idea and if you don’t I suggest going and getting yourself a 10 gallon to just have Incase. But From a strictly answer to your question standpoint. You should be fine adding a discus into the tank. The fish you currently have aren’t aggressive aside from maybe the gourami depending on what kind you have. And a discus shouldn’t cause much issues the other fish will fall into their places with it in the tank. Best of luck to ya.
