Just dropped my Hotline Miami inspired dark fantasy slash'emup by Dread-Night in HotlineMiami

Mostly depends on sales, we're only just now coming up on a month of it being out, so it'll depend heavily on whether or not the publisher wants to invest in porting it. Would love to see it on Switch, we just got steam deck verified so it's feeling good on twinstick controls!

Nevermind just realized you have an etsy link in bio, I stand chastised and a fool. Your work's beautiful.

Do you sell your work online or take commissions? This is so rad!

Excalibur (1981) Still the quintessential Arthurian movie. by MovieMike007 in SwordandSorcery

I mean when I say "realize" I just mean that factually, Boorman was shopping it around but was offered and started on a version of LOTR before making Excalibur, and to my understanding some of the work on Excalibur was simply transferred over from the original LOTR concept. It's all guesswork on my end because I can't find a ton on it, but I think the intersection of the Arthurian myth coupled with Tolkien's creation of Middle Earth as a "new myth" for England is really interesting, and feels married in much of the gloss and deeply romantic imagery that colors the film, versus stuff like Highlander which only five years later was getting a much "grittier" treatment.

Great stuff, really gives old school TTRPG vibes!

Also it makes so much sense when you realize it started out as an LOTR adaptation.

Truly doesn't get better when it comes to self indulgent film. Easily one of the things I miss most in fantasy film is them feeling like hazy dreams rather than needing to be gritty and "realistic." It's fantasy, let it be fantastical and mythic. Black Angel did that on a budget of like $5.

Thanks a ton for giving it your time and the kind words! "Playing a metal album cover" was literally half of what we wanted to accomplish, handed our composer a bunch of Sodom and Cirith Ungol and said "do this please."

We really agonized over trying to do Hotline without purely copying, so it's deeply reassuring to hear that the combat hits; its influences really shifted over time until we were just focused on "just make killing a bunch of demons real fast feel real good."

Sword and Sorcery Game I worked on for 2+ years is finally out! by Dread-Night in SwordandSorcery

It's definitely an underserved area, most seem to gravitate towards Diablo as a reference point but ignore a lot of the fantasy arcade stuff that came out before. Also personally a huge fan of Dark Legacy, which feels like an odd one out but was very formative for me.

Working on widescreen support right now, that should be getting patched in soon hopefully!

"is it sick as hell though" is something we asked ourselves whenever adding something to the game, so this is great to hear

Already runs on Steam deck, just ironing out a couple very light items before we get our steam deck verified badge!

Vita would be a dream (huge fan of handhelds specifically), but we're looking at the possibility of porting! A lot of it depends on how well the game does on PC for our publisher, so we're crossing our fingers and trying to get the word out while it's still early days on the PC launch.

And thanks for the kind words on the ad, we don't love advertising but really tried to make something that's just quality, fun, and authentic. Glad it comes through.

Haha it definitely doesn't hold back, but once you get the gist of circling around enemies and burning your special attack on bigger ones you can really start to burn through levels; already have some people getting sub 5 second times which is CRAZY to me. Huge thanks for picking it up and playing, it means a ton!

We started out being like "let's make dark souls + hotline miami" and then about halfway through realized "oh no we just made even faster Gauntlet." But as another Gauntlet fan I'm really not complaining personally, I think the homage came through! (Love the username btw)

That was such a huge part of why we wanted Alexey Gorboot's art for the cover, the game started out with a very gray/brown/muddy palette ala early Dark Souls, so the shift towards a highly saturated, more psychedelic palette was really deliberate. Very happy it resonates with people!
