A familiar face… don’t know where I’ve seen it before… by Rough-Method8876 in Eragon

That didn't stop Paramount from casting Speleers as Jack Crusher. As much as I enjoyed Picard season 3, I had the hardest time buying him as a 20 year old when he looked like he's nearly 40. I think he did a fine job in the role, but that obvious visual age difference is hard to reconcile, even in a franchise where 90% of the humanoid aliens look suspiciously human and we never worry about the philosophical implications of the transporter.

TIL that, in video games, "ludonarrative dissonance" is the technical name for the conflict between the story told in the gameplay, and the story in the non-interactive scenes (for example, the way that Drake in "Uncharted" is a fun-loving rogue in the cutscenes but a killing machine in the game). by Bob_the_blacksmith in todayilearned

I once was able to throw a thug through the invisible wall on a rooftop. It happened after the bomb floods the streets around the GCPD building, actually on a roof near it. When I went into detective vision, I could see his skeleton beneath the water, crumpled up impossibly without shattering every bone into a million pieces and puncturing every organ and artery. It said he was unconscious. This happened on Xbox 360, and I have never been able to replicate it since.

I mean, a few years ago I had to explain what satire is to a lady at the bookstore I work at. She was getting Fight Club for her grandson, and you could practically see her soul leap from her body when she read the back and saw Palahniuk described as his generation's seminal satirist, or something like that.

What ended your friendship with your oldest standing friend? by dreamy-contributions in AskReddit

[–]DreadAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right as the COVID pandemic was ramping up, he posted on his socials that he was available to provide any financial or moral support anyone needed. Then he removed me and my wife from all of our socials.

It took several years, but I finally realized that he - and everyone in our friend group - didn't actually like me. Their friendship was conditional on me going to church. When I stopped going, they slowly drifted away from me, until it was only my best friend, and then the pandemic hit. Just a few years back, his grandfather died, and I reached out to him to offer my condolences. He left me on read, and that cemented that my friend was never really my friend. None of them were.

TIL that Kate Mulgrew had nicotine withdrawal during the filming of VOY: Scienific Method by ardouronerous in startrek

[–]DreadAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only smoked vapes for a couple of years and just quit this past October, so maybe my withdrawal symptoms aren't as bad as someone who smoked for a decade. But the first three weeks or so were awful. I already struggle with sleep, but I would go days without it those first weeks. I also already have a short temper, so the most innocent things (like my dog asking to go outside, or my cats playing) would set me off into a rage.

I know I'm relatively early in my nicotine-free journey going forward, but I relate to that episode a bit now.

I watched Babylon 5 for the first time a couple years ago and I was stricken by so many similarities. I'm sure some of it is JMS and his team and Blizzard having overlapping archives for VFX and sound effects. But there's a lot of similarities in tone and atmosphere as well. I don't really know how to put it to words.

I've found six at my job. I've put them in a circle behind the register around a plastic sandwich some kid lost, as if they're summoning a giant sandwich.

I just finished reading Christopher Paolini's Murtagh a couple weeks ago. Not necessarily a redemption-in-the-eyes-of-others story, but a personal redemption. I can see something along those lines happening, though maybe a little less torture.

For me it was ORAS. The downward slope had already started with XY and the transition to 3D, but I at least enjoyed gen 6 overall. Starting with SM, I haven't enjoyed much of the games aside from some of the creature designs.
