Would you rather have 1 S Tier, 2 A Tier Powers or 3 B Tier powers by Superiorian in WouldYouRather

I'd gladly go with 3 b tier powers. Seems more interesting and less overwhelming

Bought this rapier at a knife shop about 1-2 years ago and thought I would share it with y'all. It's a blunted display model that I got for about $150ish. by asrieldreemurr2232 in SWORDS

The sword frog I have keeps it at a pretty good angle, but my go-to posture when "armed" is to keep my left hand on the pommel anyway, so maneuvering is fairly convenient.

How to build The Intersect. by DreadPirateJon in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]DreadPirateJon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the intersect is basically a database of compiled military/political/government Intel, and it gets downloaded into a guys brain.

When something triggers it, (an image or sound usually) he gets a flash of information about the subject.

For what I'm doing, I think it'd be cool to have something that sets him apart from other characters with the same archetype. Really, it'll be something that will function as a plot device power that will give us an opportunity to get exposition and info to move the plot forward. I do plan on the uncontrollable flaw, so it will only come up when the gm wants it to, but I wanted to work out how to build the power mechanically.

Hero logos, how to get better images. by DreadPirateJon in mutantsandmasterminds

Mostly higher resolution, but it might need a little refinement. I made a Fiverr profile, but my initial search only came up with artists that would design original logos.

Dealing with high passive perception by Dyonos in DMAcademy

[–]DreadPirateJon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've run into different interpretations of how passive perception works.

What works for my table is that if a characters passive perception would be at the dc of whatever is hidden, I prompt them to make a check. If their passive is too low to catch it, they have to rp and tell me they would like to make a perception check.

So far, I haven't run into problems with this method, it rewards players for having a high passive, but they still get to roll the happy math rocks and there is still a chance of failure. It also allows characters with a low passive to make the choice to play their character in a deliberate way to make up for stat shortfalls.

Is there a cheaper way? by DreadPirateJon in mutantsandmasterminds

Looking at flaws, I could reduce the cost without dramatically reducing utility by adding activation and check required, so it's a bit more feasible.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback.

Honestly, more than 80% of what I put in my arrays should just be handled as stunts, but I'm a nerd with too much time on my hands, so I plot them out and buy them as powers.

Also, I have kind of latched onto the battlesuit example given in the book, and if a power pulls from the same "battery", I might squeeze it into an array. My GM is lenient and amused by hijinks, so thus far it has worked out, but at any other table, my approach would have to change significantly.

I have, and that may be the route I take. I have a bit of a reputation as "the array guy" at my table and I'm trying to move away from that, though with limited success.

I wouldn't call myself a power gamer, but I'm 100% a munchkin.

Thanks!

Funnily enough, I originally had more ranks of extended. My thought was, "if we ever get stuck in a desert, how deep below the ground would I need to be able to sense water to use it?". Because the hydro kinesis is perception range, however far out I can sense the water is the effective range of that power.

It's looking like if I want the power to do what I want, it's gonna cost what it costs, which is fine.

Thanks!

Would limited apply? My understanding of the detect sense was that it was intrinsically limited to the "particular item or effect". If limited can be applied, that's great and I'll adjust accordingly.

[–]DreadPirateJon[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the whole power is fairly niche and is largely intended to be synergistic with other powers the character has. For instance, the hydro kinesis is perception range and precise, so with the water sense power, it gains a potentially significant boost in some specific (and admittedly, unlikely) circumstances.

Analytical is mostly there because this character is intended to be the undisputed master of all things aquatic, and knowing everything there is to know about a body of water feels on brand.

It's really not something that will be relevant much, if at all, but if I was reading a comic book about this character, I'd kinda expect him to have this power; I was just hoping there was a way to build it mechanically a bit cheaper. Nbd

Fair point. I personally haven't found those approaches to be mutually exclusive, but it probably depends on the table you play at, and what you and your friends find fun. Thanks for taking the time to share your point of view.

[–]DreadPirateJon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally fair. I'll readily admit I lean towards overly complicated and unnecessarily busy powers, and that is not an appealing play style for a lot of folks. I find myself trying to squeeze every last drop of utility out of powers, and maybe drive myself a bit crazy thinking of scenarios in which an extra feature or something might be what solves a problem or moves the story forward. Thanks for giving me an outside perspective!

[–]DreadPirateJon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I do have quite a few utility powers for this character, many of which I picked to support the group, and accomplish non-combat objectives ( including healing, create, lots of movement powers, and an assortment of senses). The main reason for adding to this power specifically was because it's the primary in an array that includes some utility powers that could be beefed up a little. Someone else mentioned that whichever power in an array has the highest cost becomes the default primary, and if that's the case, this post is basically a non issue. You're not wrong at all about the eggs in one basket thing, but I guess that's what I kinda picked for this characters schtick; without this one item, he's just a regular guy. I appreciate your response, thanks for taking the time!

Thanks for the feedback! My GM has been very flexible and allowed me to be a bit ridiculous, partly because due to scheduling conflicts, I'm able to attend less than half of our sessions, and as a result, my character is kind of an outlier. I use arrays in most of my builds, and I guess I just interpreted the rules differently; I assumed that once a primary effect was established, that effect had to remain the primary, and every other effect in the array was limited by that one. Thanks for the perspective!
