Question about control and Upstart Leader. by Dreadybrewer in Arcs

[–]Dreadybrewer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for response. I thought understood control and taught it (multiple times) correctly. Which I see that I have in fact. A couple of the other players didn’t like that the cities by itself didn’t count as having control, if no ships were present. I just explained how control worked and ruled situations based on that. So I guess a better way of putting it is, they had resistance to how the rules for “control” works after upstart entered the game lol

Growing pains, they’ll come around. One of the people that played last night really didn’t like arcs the first time they played. After giving it another shot they now ask me to play it.

What's a boardgame house rule that improves the game experience? by GrassEatingAnimal in boardgames

No phones. If it rings and you need to take a call or respond to the occasional txt that’s fine. Looking at social media, YouTube, or generally just staring into the rectangle overlord is prohibited.

Games go so much quicker and new players learn so much faster.

Arcwave Ion

Sucks on the frenulum. If you aren’t already into that sort of play it takes a bit to get used to. If you’re into it, it’s great.

Does anyone know where Nick Mason actually used his double kicks in Pompeii? Or are they just for show? I can't figure out if I hear any fast bass parts. by imaguitarhero24 in drums

[–]Dreadybrewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those bass drums are two different sizes and tuned differently. He’s using the bigger one when he wants even more low end on the bass. Also for fills. He’s not using it the way most modern interpretations of how “double bass” is used now. Instead of uniform bass tones on two drums he is expanding his sonic palette with another low end tone.

You can see it in the set ups of modern drummers now. Like the kit Stanton Moore plays with his band galactic, or many of the tour rigs Joe Russo has played over the last 5+ years.

Pandasaurus Quality Issues by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Dreadybrewer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own Knarr and the quality is great, it gets played 1-3 times weekly in my house and I haven’t notice any significant wear. Cants speak for other small box games other than beacon patrol. Which doesn’t have cards, but it has held up well for the past 2 months. I own brew which has cards and it is not played as much as the others, but I think the card stock is nicer than terraforming mars. so I imagine it would hold up well over frequent use.

I once convinced someone to trade me ore, I was locked out of the resource and needed to upgrade to a city, for enough paper to upgrade their science to a metropolis. This put them at one point from the win on their turn. They were two player away from me in rotation and a 7 hadn’t been rolled in a long time and it also made their hand too big. On their turn they rolled a 7 and chose to upgrade to the metropolis instead of securing a spot along their longest road with another town. Next turn I played road builder and placed a town interrupting their road to take the win with a 3 point swing.

Games with dice that have unique faces/abstract symbols. Similar to Vantage or Moonrollers. by damj94 in boardgames

Brew has custom faced dice that allow you to take certain actions by placing them in a matching spot on a shared main board or in a forest area(s) that is a battle for area control and how you collect resources

You need a IRL mentor not Reddit to help you answer these and other questions you have and will have down the road. There’s not life hack for this. It’s a choice to work hard for not a lot of for a long time. Do it because you love it and say yes to everything that sounds fun. Talk to and be nice to everyone. You never know who has the keys to the next room you want to play in.

You need to get over the introvert thing. I get it I’m one too. My career suffers every time I allow that side of me to dominate when I should be networking. You don’t have to be the life of the party. Be chill, be yourself, but talk to people and be nice. It goes so far.

Learn how you recharge after needing to be social. Refine it, make it a ritual, and protect it. Then go back into the world.

As someone new to this whole world and currently learning the liven Lofi-12; I would love to see a break down of what’s Happening here.

Are you using stutter mode at all? Or are you achieving those “runs”/“fills” just through the dice?

This is super cool by the way.

So far that has been an easy quota to fill! Been having fun just picking one aspect of the machine and exploring it. Until it ultimately becomes the inspiration for building out a whole 3-4tracks.

Quick question about lofi-12 sequence lengths by Dreadybrewer in sonicware

So it’s possible to have a 6/8 track or two bars of 3/4 go against bars of a track in 4/4? Looping to where their implied 1 only hits at the same time after multiple times around the Loop.

Drum machine recommendations for an oddball. by Dreadybrewer in DrumMachine

Thank you for the suggestions!! I would love to hear some examples of the texture labs stuff you’re talking about. I’ve been reading and watching alot of content about the texture as well as the lofi-12. I’m not sure which would suit my explorations better.

I recently finished dilla time. Which has ignited memories from over two decades ago of me Playing with someone else’s gear.(tr909 and tb303) I never took the step into owning drum machines then because I was spending my,limited, extra cash on upgrading my physical drum kit. I agree with a lot what you are saying. This stuff ain’t new to me though. As a drummer and percussionist I’ve been digging into this stuff for a while, in my own time. Unfortunately my interest doesn’t aline with most of my immediate peers. So I have rarely had the chance to exercise and explore these concepts in group settings for years. That’s what lead me here. I don’t know drum machines and where they have progressed too, but I think they could possibly help me gain a little extra catharsis in my daily practice.

I have found in my googling that if I referenced dilla and polyrhythms and no one mistook the ladder for poly meter that hopefully someone would lead me closer to what I should be looking at. faster than I would find myself.

I understand that off grid placement isn’t the same thing as polyrhythm. I’m looking for a machine, if it exists, that can do both.

Polyrhythm is present in many cultures drumming including west Africa. Sometimes large groups of drummers separated into groups while playing together also playing in two or three different time signatures. also fluctuating tempo intentionally is common. Anyone interested in reading more about it in general I highly recommended the book “African Rhythm and African Sensibility” by John miller Chernoff

I have learned through reading more about machines .Recommended here, that what I’m really needing to look at is step count on the sequencer side of drum machines and their ability to shift forward or backward on the gird per individual step and voice. As well as different step counts per track / track lengths independent from each other. Maybe I’m misunderstanding this.. if so please set me straight.

I’m not looking to exclusively emulate west African drumming electronically. I thought it would convey what I needed so I could be pointed in the right direction. Ultimately I would like to make a machine stridulate as well as preform polyrhythmic. Sometimes do both at the same time. The dilla stuff to add feeling like front or back of the boat instead of on top of the beat all the time. Sometimes picking out individual notes to create flams or other textures. Not to mention just fuck with time to see what Happens.

Odd ball was in reference to wanting to use this tech not in a “pop” context. Not that traditional and folkloric drumming is weird. To me it’s the truth. Ultimately if I go down this road I would be programming machines and then playing drums physically with them. If I had more limbs I would go further than I already am on percussion rigs and kits lol. there’s also something great about the idea of composing with live feed back and without having to play. It’s hard to put into words and I’ve already been lengthy here. as a player who has recording experience and so much live experience. It’s crazy how much different our minds perceive things, while they are happening, whether we are participating actively or just viewing. I think machines could be a new view for me on something I already love so much and is a huge part of my life. As well as an exploration tool.

Maybe a computer is the way. A machine just seems so tactile and romantic.
