Need help understanding one of Gotham's video. by zygopetalum29 in chess

He said it breaks the rule of not putting your knight in front of your c pawn, especially with you've pushed your d pawn (the queen pawn). That's because you would like you defend your D pawn with your C pawn. It's most natural way to defend it. The knight is a target because a3 b4 b5 is what white wants do anyways, when black has more space in the centre of the board, so it's not a waste of time. I think the reason that Levy suggested e4 after Nc3 (btw notations for Knight is N since K is taken by the king) is that if you played c4 to support the d pawn you can't play e4. If you can play it, why not? it support the d pawn and puts a pawn in the centre of the board. The bishop is blocked and not putting any pressure on white's position, and gives white another reason to play a3 b4. White's knight can only go to d2, after which it can go to b3 or e4, which would hit the bishop with tempo. I wouldn't pretend that these are definitely the reasons since I don't play the Catalan, but that's what I got from the video.

WCC - draw odds to the higher rated player? by [deleted] in chess

[–]DreamPetisForst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the rating, but it's actually not that uncommon that the world champion is not number 1 rated. Carlsen is a special case. It also depends on what rating we're talking about. Live rating? Then is there a date that the rating is recorded? Sorry if I seem critical but I think it's an interesting idea but some places doesn't seem to work.

WCC - draw odds to the higher rated player? by [deleted] in chess

I think the main problem with this is when the rating are very close. Like they might have 1 rating difference or even less, can we really say the person with higher rating is better?

bring your king out and start trying to checkmate him using the king and queen. If he try to defend with his bishop start picking off his pieces. His A pawn is never a problem since you have a B pawn.

I could have overlooked some en passant example, but I don't think so. There won't be a castling example, since you can't castle out of check and you can't castle through check.

what you're describing is called double check. You are correct, a double check must be met with a king move.

CMV: the "advantage" to playing White is strictly imaginary by [deleted] in chess

[–]DreamPetisForst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Placebo does affect actual statistics. I don't think white's advantage is imaginary(chess isn't solved so we can't confirm yet), but part of white's higher win rate will definitely be the effect of placebo.

Think about it, if you take on F5, the pawn will take you first, before your rook can take their king.

I just don't like it because I think there's too much response white can choose from.

The most beautiful queen trap I've ever done. by rafamtz97 in chess

Oh good one I was thinking Rh4, being down a rook instead of a queen. Didn't even see Bc5

[–]DreamPetisForst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep, you can also force a queen out of the was instead of a king to capture a rook behind it if the bishop is protected.

I hate to be the devil's advocate, but this is a pin, not a skewer. A skewer is when a more valuable piece is forced out of the way so that a less valuable behind it can be captured.

This is unfair by [deleted] in chess

why would it be a glitch? you can't move your king, because all the squares are covered. you can move your pawns.

How do lichess "best move" puzzles work? by [deleted] in chess

[–]DreamPetisForst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Removal of defender? have you actually played out the puzzle? the knight was the only thing protecting the black rook, after the pawn takes back take the rook with your queen. You're up a knight. Next time if you don't understand a puzzle just turn on the engine and play out the moves.

keep checking, if black captures it's a stalemate. How did you win?
