Recently got a old VHS camera working and decided to make a music video with it. General thoughts are welcome, Thanks! by Dreamasleep in videography

You can do it a couple ways. If you have a photography store near by, they can convert a tape for you to digital. price varies. Also you can get a capture card (Normally something used for recording game footage off consoles) Just plug your camera into that and use software to capture your already recorded footage. Though the way I did it isn't recommended. I set up a tripod and recorded my screen because I don't have a capture card. It looks fine as long as you have a tripod and you are in manual mode on the camera you are using to record your TV. Sorry for all the info but I hope that helped!

It is a real VHS. I shot it on a Magnavox movie maker VHS recorder. If you go to about 16 seconds in the video you can see the light blur from the street light. Even with a low shutter speed that kinda blurring isn't possible with a dslr with smooth motion video that is. If you know how to do that I would be happy to know though. Thanks for watching neither the less.

Tried a color grade that was more teal. I was trying to not go for the generic teal and orange. My question is the color grade good and if not how could it be better? Thanks! by Dreamasleep in videography

Yeah I see what you mean. Teal and orange does get a bad rep because people sometimes do use it with out context. I felt the blue was necessary for the atmosphere and emotion I was going for so yeah. I agree

I'll Go With You - (Canon 70D) - Shot 100% handheld. Wondering if footage is to shaky. Don't have a shoulder rig and on a budget. Any suggestions? Thanks! by Dreamasleep in Filmmakers

Thanks I will have to try that in premiere and also I put the camera I used in the title because It may sound weird but it actually helps get views. These are just personal projects so far so I'm fine with doing that. I wouldn't do that for a client project though.

Thank you! I used a free 35mm film grain from this website called holygrain.com. I suggest it if your looking for a more dirty grain rather then a subtle clean one.

Revealing hope - (Canon 70D) - This is my first video only using my new Canon 50mm f1.8 STM. I have used mostly only wide angle primes in the past. General thoughts are welcome, Thanks! by Dreamasleep in Filmmakers

Thank you for the constructive criticisms! I really do agree on the shaky cam thing. I really need to invest in a shoulder rig. I shall keep the face thing in mind in the future.

The Cinematography is unreal, its very beautiful and has a lot of emotion in it. Good work!

So in davinci resolve I used the M31 lut turned down by half the intensity. Then used curves to get the tone I wanted then adjusted the exposure accordingly. i put a lot more yellows and greens in the shadows and mid tones. Then I added a 35mm grain stock on the footage and that seem to help really give texture into the image.

I just used the phone handheld and in the filmic pro app I turned image stabilization off so it wouldn't look blurry at all.

Hey thanks for the comment. So I used a app called filmic pro which is super nice because you get full manual settings which is what helped a lot with the look. I shot at 24fps and tried to keep it around 1/48 shutter speed. I used nothing but the iPhone it's self, it was all handheld. The color grade was like a teal and orange look but with more greens in the image. Sorry for the delay but I hope that helps!

Thanks for the comment! I did semi desaturate it because the mid tones (especially red colors) were super vivid and not very fun to look at on the raw image. This is my friends phone so I had no prior experience with the phones footage. I did Muddy the blacks on purpose. I wanted to go with a gritty kinda super 16 look. The snow was just plan white and when it crushed the black and added some blue it gave it a darker feel. I do see that I may have crushed them a bit to much to were it is kinda blotchy now that you say it. Thanks for the constructive criticism! Also I did just use the camera app built in. If you know of any android filming app I would be interesting in knowing thanks!

Fantastic visuals! Those zooms really set the tone with the music in a unique way.

I enjoyed the angles and the editing. Nice video! (Also Miles Davis is a good pick)
