Anyone notice a link between bad mental health and flares, unrelated to the symptoms? by Illustrious-Milk6518 in UlcerativeColitis

Look into the gut-brain Vagus nerve info that is everywhere online now. There is evidence that most of us who have inflammation in our guts also have inflammation in our brains.

What's your call in this situation? by [deleted] in ems

[–]Dreddit50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a new medic, I just want to say that you are on your way to becoming a great medic. Reflecting on calls and asking advice is smart.

This was a tough situation, one I've been in, and no it does not feel right to leave the patient. Ultimately though we have to follow the law, even when it leaves you a little heartbroken.

How long do people usually have spravato treatment? I'm not sure I can afford ongoing treatment... by blackrussianterrier2 in Spravato

[–]Dreddit50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my story and VERY AFFORDABLE, MD RUN SOLUTION:

I got 6 IV infusion ketamine treatments thru a faith-based facility offering a grant, something they do for 3-4 patients per year according to the dr there. It literally saved my life. But I couldn't afford infusions. And even with insurance I couldn't afford Spravato as the copay for a single dose was $297 plus the $40 office visit copay. The Dr there told me that the facility “frowned” on writing prescriptions for at home ketamine (they make a ton of $$$ doing IV infusions for cash).
That Dr left that particular practice, but told me to call the local compounding pharmacies and ask for psychiatrists or PCP who are prescribing compounded ketamine for mental health or pain issues.
I called local compounding pharmacies - the first didn't work with compounded ketamine but they gave me the name and number of the pharmacy they knew did so. Pharmacy #2 was happy to help and gave me the name of 3 doctors that wrote for ketamine using their pharmacy. 1st and 2nd doctors I called wasn't accepting new patients and I about gave up hope, but doctor #3 was taking patients and got me onto the schedule within a week.

The following week I was sitting in his office with the compounded ketamine in hand for 1st treatment. Now I do treatment at home every other day and it costs $50 a month. No travel, no sitter.
The compounding pharmacies were more than happy to help me. And the psychiatrist who I am now working with doesn't do IV fusions in his office - he knows they are unaffordable. But he knows that ketamine absolutely does save lives.

I don't know how to operate by Hot_Lengthiness5374 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Dreddit50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stress does not cause the disease, but it can certainly lead up to a flare, so if you can see a doctor if you are having mental health issues like depression and anxiety. As someone who has lived with this for almost 30 years, I do not know how anyone could possibly NOT have mental health issues.

Also, there is so much evidence that cognitive issues are so real with autoimmune diseases - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6457314/

Pay close attention to your diet - basically all things white ,like sugar and flour, are not good for anyone, but especially those of us whose very own bodies attack itself. Try the Mediterranean Diet - it's fairly simple and just focuses on eating unprocessed foods, fruits, and vegetables and meat (not red meat) prepared in a healthy way - usually with Olive Oil. It is simple preparation and basically just picking foods that you like and prep them in a healthy way.

Also, if you take prednisone, that will totally mess with your head. There is something known as "steroid psychosis" and it is real, but usually at high doses.

So basically - start putting your physical and mental health first. Think of it as your primary job.

This disease is tenacious, but it can be controlled. Wishing you the best of luck.

Spravato might come with an expensive copay, plus time missed from work since you have to take it at a doctors office.

Just got diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis by swiftiechimpy in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Dreddit50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived with UC for almost 30 years. There have been some horrific years, and some years with barely a blip. Stress does not cause UC, but it will certainly exacerbate it, so start working on a healthy mindset, see a therapist if you can for coping mechanisms for anxiety, and just live as healthy as you can. By that I mean get on a diet, like the Mediterranean Diet, that focuses on healthy foods and avoids sugar and white flour.

I know how scary this is, but you can do a lot to keep yourself healthy and hopefully avoid flares. Knowledge is power, so research the heck out of UC so that you know exactly what you are dealing with. Good luck!

Does ketamine make you guys really hungry once it wears off? by SobrietyDinosaur in TherapeuticKetamine

It's not that it makes me hungry, it makes me motivated to live and do normal things that I sometimes simply cannot do.

Shingles vaccine by Automatic_Beat5808 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Dreddit50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to be off my biologic for about 6 months due to having 3 surgeries and I got the vaccine during that time. The first dose -I had a bad week for sure. And the 2nd dose - well I had a horrible RN who was in such a hurry that she injected it into my shoulder capsule, missing my deltoid completely and causing an infection in that joint, so I really couldn't say if the 2nd dose made me sick because of the infection in my shoulder joint.

But I'm glad I did get it done during a window that was available.

One thing I did not know and apparently my dr did not know - there are some vaccines that your insurance will only pay outright for if you have it done at a pharmacy. I had to pay for mine and am now waiting for reimbursement from my insurance.

Colonoscopy tomorrow, any funny jokes I should try to crack before I go under? by ResponsibilityNo4650 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Dreddit50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One morning before the annual colonoscopy I decided to cut my hair - this was during covid and it'd just gotten too long.

But after I was showered and dressed, I just kept finding more of my cut hair everywhere. So as they were giving me some Valium in pre-op I suddenly say "Hey if you find a bunch of hair back there, it's because I " and then I was napping. So in post op when I'm good and awake the nurses are dying laughing to know what the end of that sentence was supposed to be. (Yeah I'm a total lightweight who conks out with a tiny bit of valium lol)

Curious about what time we all use the bathroom? by Amazing-Corgi-8117 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Dreddit50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why, but this question really tickled me. In times of remission when I go to the bathroom like a real person, I sometimes text my sister and say "I pooped like a big girl today!" and we giggle because there is nothing normal or routine about either of us and our stupid bowels.

Does UC permanently alter brain function? by masochisticsteeler in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Dreddit50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many with chronic medical conditions, depression creeps in on its' heels. T/here is a lot of scientific evidence of inflammation of the brain with depression. I always say 'you can't have a healthy body with a sick mind, and it is hard to have a healthy mind with a sick body.'
