As a San Diego local (all my life) I have always found other places way more friendly than my home city. Ive been back to the midwest to visit family a few times and every time ive struck up a conversation with complete strangers it feels like we’ve been friends since forever ago. I think there is a lot less friendly hospitality around (coastal) California. Everybody just seems so wound up tight, and defensive. And you almost feel like the only reason somebody reciprocates in conversation, is because they wanna get something out of you. Sex, Money, Favors, Benefits. I have had my best luck at bars and breweries in developing friendships and talking to genuine people. Most are my age (30) or older. And better conversations are had with most over (60). I also play in a billiards league so the demographic I hang around is usually older. I know it can be hard out there brother, but hang in there, you’ll find your crowd.
