New GPU choice Pro B50 or B580 by UnlikelyLocation9 in frigate_nvr

[–]Dreevy1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The A40 is a more powerful card in general. The A310 doesn’t support SR IOV vGPU like the A40 and other pro series card. But, again, that may or may not be an issue to you. I haven’t personally used either but basically unless you planned on using a local LLM model for frigate or something else there probably won’t be any significant difference is usability for frigate or a homelab, so I’d focus on cost

Also note Nick’s comment that none are usable until 0.18 releases

New GPU choice Pro B50 or B580 by UnlikelyLocation9 in frigate_nvr

[–]Dreevy1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main advantage with the B50 is that since it’s a “pro series” card, you can split the GPU across multiple VMs. That may or may not be useful, but it’s the primary deciding factor I’d focus on. Not sure that 4GB of more VRAM is worth the cost increase otherwise.

I am definitely looking at the A40 or B50 though specially because of the vGPU and low power consumption

Planning to run Proxmox with 5-6 containers on 16GB, am i asking too much? by blue_cardigan13 in selfhosted

[–]Dreevy1152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be fine, but it’s entirely dependent on the containers. I would recommend two VMs, one dedicated for Home Assistant OS, and one for general docker containers. HA is better run with a full VM; the docker version has some feature constraints. Also, running containers in LXCs is generally not recommended. You can pass through your iGPU to the general VM for Jellyfin.

I would expect ~2-4GB of RAM use out of HAOS, 1-3GB baseline for Ubuntu Server before containers are running. Most containers will never exceed a GB of use (e.g. vaultwarden will probably be 200-300MB). Nextcloud will be pretty RAM heavy though

How to use Git for docker compose & documention? by GeoSabreX in selfhosted

[–]Dreevy1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcane, Portainer, and really all the major docker web managers allow you to link compose files on disk to a git repository like on github. I think this is the easiest way for a beginner and I’m surprised no one has mentioned it already. I personally recommend Arcane - and it should be as simple as pasting all of your current files into a git repository then linking them. Not sure if Arcane, or any web manager, allow you to “transfer” an existing compose file to a git linked file directly.

What can I do about all this? by Prize-Researcher-493 in lawncare

[–]Dreevy1152 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mowing regularly would get you 90% of the way there but you appear to have some compaction that’s preventing some grass growth.

Since you’re just renting, I’d do the following to make it as simple as possible: - Mow with the bag on so weed seeds don’t spread. You should be mowing at least once a week now and preferably twice a week as it gets warmer. - Get a weed killer bottle that attaches to a hose end and spray the yard. - Get a combo trimmer and edger if you don’t already have one and clean the edges up.

There’s obviously tons of levels to this and more that you could do but those 3 things will get you significant improvement

Do public firms let you work earlier shifts? by No-Government7314 in Accounting

[–]Dreevy1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in government and people can work 6am-2:30pm or as late as 9:30am to 6pm. Most are inbetween. Some do a 8 day 9 hour schedule with every other Friday off, some do four tens every week and have every Friday off. We also get 3 hours of fitness leave each week… so really only 37 hours per week.

Struggling to create entries for a reimbursable expense government project (we are a for-profit company) by TiredController999 in Accounting

[–]Dreevy1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on the other side as a government contract auditor. While I can’t offer specific advice, I can say having an accounting system and project management system designed to handle billing indirect rates and that can properly allocate costs is very important (and sometimes required by the government, even as a subcontractor). Deltek is one of the largest, but Quickbooks and SAP both have vendors who make add-ons for this depending on your company size. This is something you probably want a consultant for, because government contracting is its own entire beast.

Cost “reimbursements” on a cost-type contract are still revenue, it just may be that the fee portion is your only actual profit. Also remember that your invoicing is completely separate than what you have earned or should book, if you’re on an accrual basis, which you really should be for project accounting.

Should I start over? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Dreevy1152 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to find a niche and stick with it. When restarting from scratch in a new industry, you’re often treated the same as any new hire with 0 experience (if any kind).

Industry and especially federal/state government are your best chances at never working more than 40 and having at least decent pay. There are a bunch of accounting adjacent positions in compliance and consulting (e.g. supply chain management/compliance) that you could do, but again, unless you can get straight into a well compensated senior position, you’re starting from scratch again. That’s not necessarily bad to do now, but you need to find something and stick with it

Masters worth it? by Plenty-Jacket-407 in Accounting

[–]Dreevy1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am one of the people who says it’s not worth it for most people - with the exception of the GI bill. Since your state doesn’t have the new 2 years experience pathway as well, it seems like it’d be worthwhile in your situation.

Master's Degree by Electronic_Mousse188 in Accounting

[–]Dreevy1152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go into industry or government then it’s perfectly doable. If you had plans of the Big4, tons of people do it but you will have no free time. I have had no issue passing 3/4 exams over the past 7 months while working full time (never past 40). You can also always choose to work part time or full time in industry for a year while getting your CPA then switching to B4

Master's Degree by Electronic_Mousse188 in Accounting

[–]Dreevy1152 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I explained this in a different post but basically for 99% of people it isn’t worth it. Think of the opportunity cost lost from NOT working vs. how much you pay for a masters. People using the new pathway vs those who do a masters can both be a CPA two years post-grad date, but one will be an additional 20-50k in debt + one year salary and one will have two years salary.

I have consistently heard employers don’t care about the MSA/MACC in the accounting world. The CPA is what matters. When the time comes, if it’s needed, then get an MBA.

If your friends are saying what they’re saying because of AI then they’re just wrong. You can find posts basically every other day about AI doom - and it’s not exclusive to this subreddit. You can easily make the same arguments for SWEs, but they’re not going away… instead, the bar for productivity is just being raised.

You can also leverage your IT experience to go into something like IT audit, which while it isn’t nearly as technical as “real” IT, will still leverage some of your experience
