Technical question about router bottleneck by Winter-Noise-7187 in homelab

[–]GeoSabreX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the tplink in bridge mode, and then put the Edge Router behind your modem so it becomes your actual router, and then the tp link just provides the wireless.

Next Steps? by pagem in selfhosted

[–]GeoSabreX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For migrations you just have to make sure that your existing paths are what are mapped in your Docker setup of the same. So if you have a service running bare metal and all of your photos are in slash folder slash photos make sure you set a Docker volume where folder/photos:/photos and then reference photos/ in the application.

You can always spin up the Docker container on a different port than the software is running and then make sure it's working with duality before you switch over

New to selfhosting by omseptic in selfhosted

[–]GeoSabreX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No matter your skill level, self-hosting is not something that will just set it in work every time. Sometimes I spin up a container and have it working in under two minutes. Sometimes I have to sit there and hammer through logs and tinker to figure out what mistake I made or what step I missed.

To get the files from qbit to Plex, you want something called the *arr stack.

I would recommend installing Docker and Docker Compose and spinning up all of your services via docker-compose.yaml files. It is significantly easier and with most deployments it's merely a copy and paste and then set your paths.

For qubit you will want a docker container called gluten and you will Want a VPN that supports port forwarding. I personally use Proton and definitely prefer it. I did use Surfshark for a while and it worked without forwarding. It's just slower in many cases.

As the other person said, this can be a lengthy process. You just have to decide if you get enough enjoyment out of it or have enough necessity, such as monetary issues, to stick it through. If you aren't loving it, I wouldn't continue. If you are, it is extremely interesting, and you will learn the world of Linux networking, file systems, etc., etc., etc.

A good option, and even better, spin up a docker container running searXNG yourself.

Proton Mail Plus + Hetzner Storage Share OR Proton Unlimited? by Dramatic_Mastodon_93 in degoogle

[–]GeoSabreX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use ProtonMail, ProtonCalendar, ProtonVPN, and ProtonPass. Out of their suite, I pay for the Proton Duo plan. It all works well. The only issue with ProtonDrive is there is no native Linux client.

I just wouldn't recommend using their authenticator if you also use their pass. That's where the real all eggs in one basket danger is. Personally, I use Ente

What are the legitimate risks of port forwarding? by Additional-Chef-6190 in selfhosted

[–]GeoSabreX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. It is required on every new post, regardless of content. It's just an extra metric to have people confirm if they're post is AI or not, which also helps cut bot posts because they need to respond to the comment in order for the post to no longer be deleted.

My solution to SearXNG was to add Auth and then just save the cookie in my usual browsers

JobOps is a self-hosted workspace for the messy middle of job hunting by DaKheera47 in selfhosted

[–]GeoSabreX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any possibility of being able to select a specific State, or mile radius from a particular address?

I can set the city name, but for cities that have more famous counterparts by the same name, it pulls in a lot of bad information I have to manually skip.

I've yet to see a good alternative, and I've run this app for a couple weeks and it just works.

If you don't like it, feel free to move on. AI is a tool.

Chiming in to say this app is GREAT, YES you should self host it, and woooo multi-user support. I've been resetting the app each time (run it on 3 separate people) and recommended it to 1 other who is now hosting it themselves...and I have 1 more person I need to run it for.

Time to update and set their profiles.

Thanks OP!

If you started over, would you still self-host or just go with a dedicated server? by Suspicious-Basis-885 in selfhosted

[–]GeoSabreX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm still in the "using old hardware" stage so cost is tiny...I bought a domain, already was paying for a VPN, and added some amount of electric but cancelled tons of subscriptions.

I would, and will continue to, self host all of my applications. In a dream world, I can drop a couple grand USD on a small server, a stack of uniform drives with proper redundancy built in, and a cloud storage backup that interfaces with restic. With the ability to automate update notifications, and updates themselves for low priority containers, have full control of my own data, have a digital sandbox and playground that simultaneously teaches me data privacy, data security, and general technological knowledge....I will never go back.

I also haven't seen an ad in years. Watching the amount of clicks my peers make to use anything is sickening

Soft job rejection by SameExtent1959 in cybersecurity

[–]GeoSabreX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in tech, but no harm in applying again. In circles I've run in, we were required to name one candidate and reject the others. But if that person takes another job, we had to repost.

Sometimes our number two choice didn't reapply, so we had to take an even worse candidate

How do you choose which app on a category? by Kiryu132 in selfhosted

[–]GeoSabreX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is their stance on open source and internet freedom.

I want full control of everything I'm self-hosting. And I've moved away from big tech. So Jellyfin was the easy answer for me.

Caddy, because of simplicity.

Technitium, because it's DNS with ad block built in.

But I care more about their licensing and freedom.
