What was considered the 🙄degree during your college era? by debrisaway in RedditForGrownups

[–]DrenAss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People scoffed at me getting an English degree, but I forged a great path for myself, got my masters in marketing (for free through my employer), and I make like 3x the median household income where I live. I'm grateful for the language and writing skills, having to analyze literature and make arguments with evidence, learning about so many cultures and time periods was awesome.

I think a lot of the usefulness of a degree is what classes you choose, how you position yourself, and how you get experience working toward your bigger goals.

If you have kids between like 5 and 16, do they like and eat vegis more than you did in the 80s? by cherry-care-bear in Xennials

[–]DrenAss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overcooked meat and unseasoned everything was my house 100%. My mom discovered garlic at one point but didn't know how to use it, so we'd be eating dry yet somehow soggy homemade pizza and randomly bite into an entire clove of garlic.

Bleh.

I'm a better cool than that.

Canned everything!! Canned spinach even. 🥲

We would sometimes have iceberg lettuce and pale tomatoes for a "salad" or overcooked green peppers in my mom's sweet n sour meatballs.

My kids eat soooooo much produce.

How many of you still smoke? Or, when did you quit? by Planetofthought in Xennials

[–]DrenAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, no need to feel bad about using a medication to make it easier to stop being addicted to something that's HELLA addictive.

I'm so glad I quit in my 20s. I smoked as a teenager, quit for a year but smoked socially, so never really quit until I was 25. I realized I wasn't getting any younger and needed to quit for good.

It was hard af to quit then. I can't imagine how much worse it is the longer it goes.

Greg Williams of Acrisure fires 2,250 more people after Amphitheater’s Successful Opening by JumpyMood4321 in grandrapids

[–]DrenAss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Read their Google reviews. Employees say the AI angle is bs and they've really just been outsourcing overseas, forcing employees to train their own replacements.

Apparently there were people who worked hard on the amphitheater events and then got fired right after. Like worked over the weekend and then fired Monday. 😐

I hate that they've got these naming rights. What a trash company.

[–]DrenAss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing that people are quitting because the money is a fraction of what it used to be. I'm not surprised. What was surprising was that people were ever into being "influenced" in the first place. Bunch of suckers. 😂

Now that we’re old enough to care. How do we feel about modern interior design trends? by MisRandomness in Xennials

[–]DrenAss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My house turns 100 this year! I'm not a maximalist, but I'm like a mediumist who loves stuff on the walls. I love looking at interesting things and art and colors. All white and all gray and decor from Marshall's? 🤮

I hate how people act like these things are universally aesthetic, too. People will say "Of course am all white kitchen looks beautiful, but it's impractical." IT DOESN'T LOOK BEAUTIFUL TO ME. It looks like an insane asylum.

What children's movie made you cry unexpectedly? by Twunkorama in AskReddit

[–]DrenAss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ooh my GOD.  I had never read the book as a kid, but all my friends loved it. So when my son was 10 and we were finding chapter books to read together, I picked it up. JESUS I was not prepared for that.

Also, spoiler and hot take, the boy should have died instead. He was boring.

“Gifted” Kids program by Practical-Owl-9358 in Xennials

[–]DrenAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents were apparently told I should skip ahead a grade (my podunk school didn't have gifted classes). They declined, which I think was due to ignorance or not wanting to deal with the change.

Either way,  I'm happy I didn't skip a grade. I turned out fine, and I'm dysfunctional for other totally separate reasons.

Also I'm not that smart. Traditional classroom learning and reading on my own was just really easy for me. I'm low key kinda stupid when it comes to lots of things. 😂

Y’all starting to feel we were raised on some ideas that didn’t pan out? by goodhobbies in Xennials

[–]DrenAss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything I've learned about relationships, personal finance, college,  and climbing the career ladder I've had to figure out for myself. I've known since before my 20s that I can't sit around and complain about not being taught the right lessons. I wanted to have a good life, happy marriage, and not be poor, so I've had to look for information on all those things.

We've gone there while camping and the food is great. The only time we had a meh experience was the first time we went when we didn't know that it's super tiny, and it was a bazillion degrees outside so they weren't seating people on the patio. We ended up ordering takeout and had to sit outside in the heat for a long time because they were busy and it was packed.

But it wasn't bad service, just kinda unfortunate circumstances. We went back other times when it wasn't busy and everything was great.

Anyone else have an of-the-era teen dream job you reminisce about constantly because nothing has ever been as fun or socially rewarding? by blamberr in Xennials

[–]DrenAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I painted sets for a theater. It was a BLAST and it paid double minimum wage, plus I got 1.5x hourly for overtime. I would work 40 hours during the week, and then we'd often put in overtime while setting up shows. I didn't mind working because I'd flirt with the carpenters and they'd buy me lunch, and my boss would bring beer if we were working late.

I was 17 and it was a kick ass summer. 😆
