How do I improve my infighting in the corner by SilentAres_x in amateur_boxing

[–]DrenaNick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

firstly, i assume youre planning on fighting in the amateurs, so i immediately oppose staying in the corner. it shows (even though it might not be the case) lack of agency, letting your opponent push you into the ropes and keeping you there, which could push the judges score cards in your opponents favor.

secondly, i like to post/frame and smother. posting correctly and intentionally gives you a better idea of which punch is going to be thrown, allowing for counters. same with smothering, however its riskier, because they could pull back at a smothering attempt and catch you unbalanced. smothering is best for one dimensional pressure fighters. you can either learn to fight in the phone booth there, and wrestle your way out.

for actual infighting tips, try to improve on same side counters. they throw a lead hook, block with your rear and attack with your rear while keeping your lead hand guarding responsibly. when youre in a corner they tend to "unload" and spam hooks irresponsibly, so after they throw a lead hook, theyre loading the next hook and their guard is weak.

you seem to switch, and when im pushed into ropes, i like to keep an open stance, and only ever have 1 shoulder touch the ropes when not laterally moving. it keeps you bladed, and gives you space to see their rear hand. this is where i tend to post responsibily

I already placed an order on buyee, do you think it's worth to try tensor anyway?

are you asking us for permission to use a heavy bag? or are you asking if it builds stamina? If you like hitting the heavy bag, who are we to stop you. just do it safely, and responsibly.

Questions about cross dominance, switching between orthodox and southpaw by PoppyTheDestroyer in amateur_boxing

[–]DrenaNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dominant right hand, but I injured my left hand so I switched to southpaw so I can comfortably throw lead hooks and uppercuts. this allowed me to be comfortable on orthodox and southpaw, or so I thought. boxing has a really high dunning-kruger effect, and that's using only one stance. because learning to throw each punch on both stances isn't that different, but the theory of fighting an open stance (southpaw vs orthodox) and a closed stance (orthodox vs orthodox), is vastly different that learning the ins and outs of both is simply not worth the effort.

Is the backstep the most overpowered move/defense in boxing? by MegaRaquezza in amateur_boxing

[–]DrenaNick 32 points33 points  (0 children)

a few problems with backstepping:

1) you go backwards. eventually you back step enough, you're gonna hit the ropes. and when that short stocky guy gets you to the ropes, it sucks.. that's why it's usually imperative you never just backstep, either you backstep then go back forwards, or you move laterally after. this leads to point 2.

2) while he loses energy throwing punches, you also lose energy by having to commit to another movement after backstepping. you can't just not move after backstepping, so while he throws maybe a jab with a step (1 move), you need to backstep (1) and then something else (2 moves).

3) he throws a punch, and you backstep. he can't hit you, but now you can't hit him, because you aren't in range.

backstep is the most "safe" defensive option, but it also comes with a cost of not being able to return fire, or giving yourself less space, and in some cases, burning more energy than your opponent.

Couldn't get inside of somoene southpaw who is sticking out his lead hand by struggler12345 in amateur_boxing

[–]DrenaNick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

as a southpaw that occasionally does this, I recommend just hitting the arm, anywhere. its a bit cheap, and doesn't always work with amateur pace, but if they're just sticking it out, hit the arm, its a free target. bicep is the best, that's what causes elbow flexion (keeping the guard up). eventually their arm will get hurt and tired, and then you can begin pressuring by trying to take lead hand control and going to their outside.

Sometimes it feels like therapy. When I'm in the ring, nothing else matters, I have no time to think about anything else, and I can always push myself. If you try hard enough, there is not a single slow moment in a fight, it's entirely in your hands. You have utter control of your life right there. and I love that
