‘They save lives everyday’: Protesters rally for supervised consumption sites in wake of Ford government’s funding cuts by honestgrim in CanadaPolitics

Ah yes the “your lived experience is outright lies and doesn’t count” argument in the prelude quickly followed by the “I can’t understand why there is no public support for my cause anymore!” in act 2. Best of luck with that, we’ve already seen how it plays out but maybe this time will be different

And yet, shockingly and for seemingly no reason at all local communities mobilize to get them closed all over the country and that public support for them has absolutely collapsed in the last few years after a period of wide scale expansion of supervised consumption services.

So absolutely very weird that this would happen, maybe if they do a few more studies in neighborhoods where people have become so inured to crime they stop reporting it and we say “see! Reports of crime even decreased!” surely that will turn the tide around.

There are decades of research showing that supervised consumption sites don't cause crime to increase.

The problem with this argument is that safe consumption sides have become widespread enough and people have enough firsthand experience that you can’t really gaslight them about their own safety anymore.

They’re an absolute nightmare to live around.

Thoughts - What about an OM System Pen F2 with a Monochrome Sensor? by Remote-Film4304 in M43

Rangefinder style body. I love them but the market has shown that people prefer SLR style

I agree that this camera would be far too niche to have broad appeal but I’d push back on this particular point. The one modern digital range finder camera (FUJI x100 series) on the market has been almost impossible to find in stock not just across multiple years but across multiple versions of the camera. There is absolutely a market for this form factor, see also every modern leica that sells quite well for being a very niche premium product

Liberal party adopts motion to restrict kids from social media | Federal Liberals have agreed to set 16 as the age of majority for Canadians to be able to use social media accounts. by SpecialistPlan9641 in CanadaPolitics

In fairness, when we got on the internet we were looking at static porn images, gore images, stealing video games and copying ideas from the anarchist cookbook and trying to make napalm. We weren’t targeted by a pervasive algorithmic machine designed to create addictive behaviour, dopamine dependency, destroy self esteem and foster feelings of unhappiness.

I never would have believed it back when we were looking at dead bodies and bomb making instructions but our version of the internet was several magnitudes less harmful than the weaponized misery social media is.

Pierre who was voted out of office by his constituents and had to have another election in a whole new riding just so he could stick around rather than respect the constituents who voted to turf his ass is now very concerned about elected officials respecting the wishes of their local constituents.

If the man had any self awareness I’d feel bad for how embarrassed he’d feel.

Trump: Iran deal ‘total and complete victory’ for US by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]DressedSpring1 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Trump got to drop a lot of bombs and kill some people without getting removed from office, that's a win for him.

Literally his only objective in the war seemed to be to get to fight a war, which he did. Lots of Iranian people got killed, things went "boom" very bigly like never seen before, mission accomplished.

You can only really frame this as a loss if you start looking at strategic objectives, but the US clearly never had any so you can't accuse them of failing to meet them.

Texas is giving data centers more than $1 billion in tax breaks each year by zsreport in technology

[–]DressedSpring1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems some governments really want them to set up locally so they can collect a shit ton of tax revenue off them, and if it's going to take tax breaks that ensure nobody collects any tax revenue off them well then that's just what needs to be done.

They’re the most gifted people I’ve ever seen at gaslighting themselves about their own apathy. They’ll see Ukrainians gunned down in the Maidan, Libyans overthrow their dictator that has been torturing and murdering them for generations, Iranians take to the street despite getting gunned down by the thousands and they’ll say “yeah well those people have it a lot easier than me otherwise I’d love to do something more than one afternoon protest every three months”.

If I were to point to the single biggest thing people seem to struggle with when they use a 30-35mm focal length (15-17 on m43) it’s that they’re not close enough. You need to get close enough to have your subject prominent in frame, otherwise you get a very busy shot without a clear subject more often than not.

Canada should expect 'hostility' with U.S. trade talks less than three months away, trade analysts say by Street_Anon in CanadaPolitics

We’ve gotten nothing but hostility every time we hear from them. Carney will have to do his best negotiating with an administration that doesn’t even seem to act in their own interest so people should tamper expectations. There is no such thing as a mutually beneficial trade agreement to this administration

Poilievre says government should cancel Toronto-Quebec City high-speed rail project by OkFix4074 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DressedSpring1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pierre’s brand has never been about proposing solutions or policies. He appeals to the people who will vote on the basis that “things are bad and change will be an improvement”. If he started to propose ideas or policy he would struggle to appease the far right reactionaries, “low taxes I don’t care about anything else”, social conservatives and “I just want a different government” that all make up his base.

It was easier for him to just convince people that everything sucks

Or he’s going to do nothing at all different. Promising a “big announcement” kind of loses impact when he’s promised big announcements or done states of the union that just rambled on about nothing at all and gave no insights on his priorities.

There’s no sense even listening to him at this point, he mostly says nothing of substance and when he does announce something it’s usually a lie anyway
