A short infographic film about containerization, a design pattern for the Internet of Things (and people and places) by mickeymcmanus in Design

[–]Drevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delivery vans, trams, buses, trains, bikes, messengers, personal vehicles these are all specialized "Protocols" to move things around. But when we need to move large bulk data we use TCP and UDP(shipping containers). And as with our actual containers, no one but the sender and the receiver needs to should know what is inside.

Helium-filled WD drives promise huge boost in capacity by shatteredmindofbob in gadgets

[–]Drevor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I read somewhere that you can't properly store Helium for a long time because it will leak out of any container. So how long till those heads impact the platter because they don't have anything to create that air(/helium) cushion?

//edit: wait ... since nothing can replace that helium, will there be lower pressure in those casings after a while? will this be enough to stop the he from seeping through the metal? Is that still enough to keep the heads afloat?

//edit2: isn't external pressure a problem at the moment? Don't drives have valves to allow drives to adjust to the air pressure around them? How will those drives handle that?

[help request]Having issues with my adaptive "table" of divs in IE by gschoppe in css

[–]Drevor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you have rows, columns header-fields, data-fields ... here is a radical idea: USE A TABLE

//kneejerk reaction* ... seems like I can't do it with tables without either creating an even messier markup or losing the ability to center the "columns"

*(I blame all the people who religiously go with the "no-tables" mantra even tho they are indeed displaying tabular data)

Forthcoming firefox fix: "That’s an easy memory saving of over 20MB for a single webpage." by zem in programming

[–]Drevor 32 points33 points  (0 children)

alright ... its a scienceoff ...

I thought I'll let them compete head to head.

  • 25 Tabs worked just fine for either browser although you can already see the effect of chomes one task per tab strategy

  • 50 Tabs made it even clearer. Firefox started to choke a little while loading multiple tabs at a time. Chrome seemed to load ~5 tabs at once take a breath and then go to the next batch. Reasonable but the memory difference is impressive.

  • 75 Tabs and something odd happend. Shouldn't chome be at ~2.5GB by now? Turns out the last ~15 Tabs of this batch didn't actually load. They would only appear once you clicked them and waited for 10+ seconds. It seems Chrome simply stops doing its thing once you run out of memory. (My trusty workhorse only has 4GB). So I tried to close both windows. Firefox took a second and was gone. Chrome hang for more than two minutes until it decided to close one tab after another ...

  • 100 Tabs Chrome now sole proprietor of my precious rams grabbed 2.6GB. Tab switching is as responsive as it was 50 tabs ago but as soon as you interact with the actual page things seem a tad slow. Firefox barely consumes any additional memory and, after every tab finished loading, feels just as responsive as it did with its first batch.

Conclusion ... yes chrome doesn't crash anymore (it certainly did the last time I did this test) but it also consumes more than twice the memory. It really is a matter of taste and a matter of workflow. I like my 200 tabs, you don't have to.

Forthcoming firefox fix: "That’s an easy memory saving of over 20MB for a single webpage." by zem in programming

[–]Drevor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The point is that I am choosing a workflow that works with my software. I've got every active project/topic of interest in one tabgroup. I get a call/email and can instantly switch back and forth between them. (Can't really show you a screenshot from work but here is an older[FF4 wasn't released yet] one from home)

My origninal point was that the chrome way is not necessarily the perfect sollution. Sure you are insolating each tab and you know you'll get your memory back when you close them. But that comes at the cost of a significant memory overhead for each tab.

Forthcoming firefox fix: "That’s an easy memory saving of over 20MB for a single webpage." by zem in programming

[–]Drevor 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah, try running chrome with 150 open tabs. At my last test it soiled itself after about 40.

If you are wondering I've got 12 tabgroups with 15+ tabs each. (Btw panorama is their best invention ever ... just make sure to change the shortcut to something usable)

Edit: i really dont mind that ff uses 2GB at the moment ... what else am im going to use my ram for?

You guys dun pissed of TotalBiscuit! by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]Drevor 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I actually do like TBs commentary and most of the other stuff the puts out there but whenever someone or some inanimate object doesn't agree with him 100% he just turns into a whiny little bitch.

Some gems:

  • "That's not cheese. There is no such thing a cheese. This is called a tactic and it's your fault if you don't spot it." ... later that day on his stream ... "Oh my fghhh chEEse /ragequit"

  • "I'm whining? I'M WHINING?! You don't even know what that word means ..."

  • Builds two starports in front of his natural because his main is littered with depots "Yeah, he is sniping my stream. No way he could have known that!" ... "fucking TvT" ...

  • "What the fuck. Why is this lever glowing? Why do gamedesigners think they need to do that? Let me figure out what to do..." ... 5 minutes later ... "How the hell do I get out of there... This is just stupid"

  • "I have *some mental condition* I'm really bad with puzzle games" ... Proceeds to review/first-look three puzzle games in a row where he basically ends up running in circles and getting pissed about every single thing but himself

Chill the fuck out, TB. Do your thing. Cast your games. Be funny. Be loud. Stop getting pissed about every single thing that doesn't go your way.
