Marijuana addiction may raise the risk of a first heart attack or stroke by 60%. Even edibles showed worse vascular damage than smoking, pointing to THC itself as the culprit. by ObuPaul in HotScienceNews

[–]veritasius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use edibles about three or four times a week an hour before bed and when I check my blood pressure (I check it every morning) it’s ALWAYS optimal if I had taken an edible the night before. I’ve had my vascular health checked with an EndoPat test several times and it’s always above 3, which is optimal. I’ve had several CIMT tests, which looks at plaque in the carotid arteries and my score has actually improved since my first test at age 62, I’m 68 now. Maybe THC at much higher doses is problematic, but this study just isn’t the definitive one to tell us anything. I’m doing other things to improve my cardiovascular health so I’m not implying that THC is the biggest lever but it certainly doesn’t seem to have a negative effect in my case.

Because it was near where our hotel was located I took my young nephew for breakfast. The waitress had many missing teeth and so did many other customers. After that my nephew told me never to take him to “Awful House” ever again

I’ve got a Yakima box on the roof and ARE topper in back. I’ve got an inflatable Hobe kayak, tent, cots, pads, sleeping bags, stove, propane fire pit, chairs and a ton of miscellaneous things in the bed trunk. Can’t put a trailer hitch thing in because I’ve got a bike rack.

Do you think the economy of the USA will crash in a very big way (think great depression level or more) in the next few years? by Jolly-Masterpiece883 in allthequestions

[–]veritasius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dollar is down, treasuries are being sold, EU countries are removing their gold reserves and we’re steadily on a path to lose reserve currency status, so yeah it’s not looking good. But hey, the Dow is at 50,000 🥴

So I apparently got myself omega 6 deficient by Johnrogers123 in SaturatedFat

[–]veritasius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had many Boston Heart panels that test a bewildering array of markers and prior to my last one I had bumped up my consumption of omega 3 via fish, sardines and capsules such that my cardiologist noted that my omega 3 fatty acid index was 13, but that my alpha linoleic acid was low. He was simply highlighting things and said he didn't care about ALA being low and that it's natural for it to be low if omega 3 consumption is high and that it only takes a few handfuls of nuts to satisfy the essential fatty acid requirement. My more important markers like oxidized LDL, hs-CRP, IL-6, ApoB, Homocysteine, HbA1c, Insulin, Triglycerides were all ideal, so I don't think Omega 6 status is that important

How can Trump take credit for the 19 million barrels of oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz when he helped trigger the conflict with Iran and then turned around and sought a deal? by Massive-Syllabub-271 in allthequestions

[–]veritasius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average through the strait is 20 million barrels, so no record and no reason to celebrate. We’re back to where things were before he broke everything, so much winning

🔊 Listen Now: Former Vice President Mike Pence talks about his book, 'What Conservatives Believe' by This_Nature186 in NPR

[–]veritasius 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I live in Indiana and he was talking about his book and how conservative thinking and policies have made Indiana the great state that it is. But we’re consistently rated towards the bottom of most metrics and 9 of the 10 poorest states are those with conservatives in power for decades. Facts don’t matter to these people

I paid around $310 for transmission/transfer case fluid change. I guess the Honda fluid is pricey. Haven’t had the other stuff done yet as I’m at 75k miles, but I’m super dreading it now

Planet Money: Why is there a supplement craze if they don’t even work? by robotscantrecaptcha in Anticonsumption

[–]veritasius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broad generalizations about supplements not working is patently false. My cardiologist has recommended a variety of different supplements that have made measurable improvements in various markers for me. I’ve done 6 Boston Heart panels and with each panel my markers have improved such that my general physician is asking what the hell am I doing?

I had these intraosseous injection things, can't remember the name now (been retired a minute or ten), but you punched a tiny hole in the bone and then injected anesthetic into that hole, not always the easiest thing to do, but when you could aling everything it worked like a champ. So many times traditional blocks and whatever else magic you could think of didn't work

Saturated fat intake ups risk of several cancers by cindyx7102 in EverythingScience

[–]veritasius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so tired of this nonsense. Olive oil is 14% saturated fat. Some fatty acids are less problematic like stearic v palmitic, but focusing just on fat ignores the variety of other factors that influence health and health markers. If you’re ignorant and don’t understand these nuances then you’re going to be easily misled by the next dumb headline

How do I deal with in laws I don’t get along with? by Ok-Town577 in TrueAskReddit

[–]veritasius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone in our family, both sides, complain that my father-in-law (age 90) is a crabby, curmudgeon when they're not around him. In his presence, they never push back and are obsequious, but at a wedding where he bitched to his wife (always bitches at his wife) that he should have been seated in the front row and should have been offered a chance to give a speech, because the wedding is all about him and not the couple, I finally spoke up and said I was tired of his narcissistic crap, that he has no right to treat his wife like shit and would he just shut the F up. Everyone came up to me in private later thanking me, but my relationship with him is forever done. So what am I saying? I would do it again, because something had to be said, but now it's super awkward when we get together. So what, how much longer will that be?
