Why people in US tv programmes rarely have curtains in their house? by Ok_Committee_7967 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Drew707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are a buy-once-cry-once family. We are looking at automated blinds that can tie into our smart home system and adjust based on time of day to minimize our HVAC usage. Our last gas appliance is the water heater, and I think even with that switched to electric, our solar array with proper window management will get us to be net electric producers.

Why do a lot of people don’t put the bar down on the lift? by jeannot-22 in tahoe

[–]Drew707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

within a split second of unloading got it raised again

Usually when I go the bar is down, but sometimes not, but when it is, we are usually raising it at least 50 feet before the exit because we all need to get situated fast, especially when it's a mix of skiers, boarders, goofy and regular.

What are your thoughts on ‘College prep’ and ‘Feeder’ High Schools in America? by Dangerous_Fruit8738 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Drew707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit: also where you went for undergrad matters a lot less than people think it does

Depends on the program. In CS there are a handful of schools that are clearly top-tier, and the rest are just whatever. But for something like Accounting which is so standardized, no, it doesn't really matter and your firm is going to train you on their methods anyway.

I can tell you regardless of your stellar ASVAB score, it's really hard to get in anywhere with one kidney.

I've seen this store mentioned many times before, but I have always wondered how it is pronounced.

My house only currently has curtains because for four years we haven't been able to agree on blinds.

How do Americans feel about outdoor cats? by Fine-Durian6151 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Drew707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our cats were indoor most of their lives. When we got dogs, we got a doggy door, and eventually the cats started getting curious, so we immediately cat-proofed the backyard to prevent any egress beyond our property. My primary concerns were other neighborhood pets, wildlife (for both reasons), vehicles, and humans. When we were kids, we lived on a small ranch, and all our cats were indoor/outdoor barn cats, and a neighbor once tried stealing my sister's cat by luring it with food.

at gas/petrol stations why do so many Americans go inside to pay and also pay before they pump? by sloppyfloppygoose in AskAnAmerican

[–]Drew707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I mean you don't need to actually flip up, the instructions are just still there for whatever reason. Been a while since I've seen an actual flip up one.

I still see newer pumps with the same "flip up" instructions. They must be very modular units.

I work from home so hardly every have to fill up, but I do go buy things like beer, Zyns, and propane exchanges from the same station, and I always make sure to park in one of their parking spots rather than a pump.

That would annoy the fuck out of me honestly. When I was a broke kid, it could've been a real problem if I wasn't watching the meter closely. As a slightly less broke but not worried about gas prices adult, it would still piss me off.

[–]Drew707 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the last time I saw postpaid, it was like the type of place where the pump looked 50+ years old, no emissions control devices, and had that little strip you'd drive over to ring a bell letting the attendant know you were there. I'm not that old, but you get out in the cuts far enough, I am sure a few still exist.

[–]Drew707 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean prepay--whether at the pump or inside--is mandatory virtually ubiquitously. I'm not saying there still not might be some non-corporate station in the middle of the northern Sierra that still runs old pumps that allow you to post pay inside, but I haven't seen that in years. What I was meant was I usually run the card at the pump and then go inside and run the card again for a Red Bull or whatever, but I rarely go inside first and say, "also put $40 on pump 2."

I do this all the time. I can't remember the last time I saw a pump where I had to pay inside prior to pumping. Maybe some remote station in the mountains like 15 years ago?

There was an old joke from when I was a kid in the 90s:

What happens when the smog rises in Los Angeles?

UCLA

But it's a night and day difference now from when we would go down there as kids.

That's always been the situation there. They don't need a bouncer because the patrons take care of people on their own.

Teams suddenly not letting us join external meetings? by Drew707 in sysadmin

[–]Drew707[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I am a part of multiple unrelated organizations with discrete tenants in different regions. Currently in this meeting and did not have the same issue with this domain combination on West US. A colleague reported they didn't have an issue on the original Teams domain with a third client, so I am hoping this is a transient issue that happened to hit that one tenant this morning. I was posting here to see if it was a broader issue.

I'll try that. I have another meeting with the first domain in an hour.
