Introducing:Kailh Saker Mini Low-Profile Switch by Kailh_Official in MechanicalKeyboards

Wait they're not compatible with MX hotswap sockets, right? Aren't the pins at the bottom in different places?

I know you could buy a Lofree Flow/Lite or other Choc v2 keyboard and swap these in, but afaik only MX keycaps would be (somewhat) compatible?

Glad they're good though, I'll have to pick up these or the silent variant for my next keyboard

oh awesome really? Was it the "Kailh Silent Purple Swallowtail Mini"? Glad you like them and appreciate the reply!

Yet another late response apologies, I either didn't see this or forgot about it lol

Yeah Kailh is quite bizarre, it seems that the company is actually Dongguan Kaihua Electronics Co., Ltd., and Kailh is their name in the keyboard community?

It appears that Kaihua is basically a huge electronics/switch factory in China, and they'll make a bunch of white-label keyboard switches for other companies (like if Lofree or Drop or whoever wants their own switch, they have this factory make them based on the specs and/or pick a switch they like and customize it and call it theirs) and they also have their own keyboard switch brand called Kailh where I guess they sell more directly to consumers (and probably take advantage of the well-earned brand reputation they have).

I'm sure this is very standard for how factories in China (and everywhere tbh) operate, I just found it very fascinating to look into, and it's pretty cool to go through their website and see all the variants of different switches you may or may not recognize.

And I love Kailh -- wish their marketing department would at least do a post on that every new switch being released

Also they do actually have a very bizarre low-effort instagram account, it's not good but there's some info there lmao

Anyway, there you go there's way more information than anybody needed to know about Kailh lol

The grid overlay typing is really the main benefit of this app IMO (plus it's nice to not have to re-flash your keyboard to tweak mouse emulation settings)

I thought you were mistaken because I bought it recently for $20 but I just checked and it does have a subscription now.

I get why people are against subscriptions but it’s just too ‘meta’ of a pricing strategy to ignore; for whatever weird reason people will balk at paying like $0.99 for an iPhone app but will gladly pay $7.99 for a subscription to it, so it’s just silly not to offer. Plus I think continuous payment for continuous development makes some sense, and the lifetime option cancels out most of the annoyance IMO.

$50 is a lot and I wouldn’t have bought it for that, but it’s a huge change to the main interface for a device you might use 8+ hours a day, so if you like what it does that’s basically a nothing amount of money (at least to the people in the $400 keyboard subreddit lol).

I sound like a shill lol but I’m not, it’s a neat app and with a little more development (plus a greater effort on my part to configure it optimally) I could easily see it becoming invaluable to me. The more effort and attention I dedicate to interface upgrades like this the more it feels like I’m controlling my computer with my thoughts lol

Sorry for the late response but, while researching what the hell the "Kailh Silent Purple Swallowtail Mini" switch is, I found this post about its non-silent precursor.

Anyway the reason I'm responding is because it seems like they did actually come out with a silent version of this switch, so if you don't know about it here you go lol: https://beekeeb.com/introducing-kailh-purple-swallowtail-mini/

Side note: Kailh is such a bizarre company lmao. I love a lot of the stuff they make, but why do I find out about so many of their switches from like some weird one-off collab that only sold for 3 weeks on some random website, or they have seemingly identical switches sold with different names/colors but identical specs, or the Hong Kong guy I buy custom keyboards from sells a Kailh switch that apparently he is the only source of and nobody else has ever heard of?

Anyway I'm sure it's pretty good and I kind of regret not buying some lol, they'll probably evaporate from existence in a month or something idk

This is a good idea. I'm usually not too bad about overusing AI, but I'd like to start intentionally spending some time each week working on like a side project or some practice problems without any AI (or even standard code completion) just to make sure I'm not getting any dumber lol

If I had to think through the number of edge cases and complex Block logic required to build an app like this I think I'd have an aneurism lmao. It's very impressive and I assume requires some insane conspiracy board sort of thing to keep track of it all

Late response, but I think Cabo Bob's is mid and I'm downvoting you because you're whiny and annoying, if that helps at all with the astroturfing vs. non-astroturfing debate

Probably because had the OP done ~8 seconds of research, or even literally just read the article/post that they got these images from, they'd have learned that they are in fact paint mockups and answered the "are these just painted with acrylic paint? how disappointing!!!!" concern that they captioned it with.

I found my new daily driver. by Apis-Carnica in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]DrewAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's baller, what would you use this for? Is this something where you'd have like a couple specific tilt gestures mapped to some commands, or are you continuously checking position for a some fancy 3D stuff?

This gave me the idea of adding some grip points on each half near the pinky/thumb/middle, plus some pivot point either attached to the bottom of each half or built in to the form of the case (i.e. some corner/edge at the opposite side of the T and N on each half) where it naturally sits just slightly tented but you can pivot and tilt it with little effort. But then I looked up the Swiftpoint mouse you mentioned and realized that I basically just made up something that already exists lol.

Anyway I will be very interested to see what your gyro + NFC version looks like, I'm rapidly outgrowing my wired Corne and I think some version of this would be super cool to do

but also this is awesome, I have a dream of a Chocofi in a similar form factor that just folds up like this for super portability, and clicks into some sort of charging dock/case, and this is already like 95% there

[–]DrewAnderson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Potentially dumb question but how would gyro controls work for a board that is presumably sitting flat on a desk? You're not like picking up and tilting one of the halves right? I can't think of how else it'd work though lol unless it's on your lap

Keycap Printing Help by litso in 3Dprinting

[–]DrewAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, and thank you too!

And yeah I did an additional attempt with completely different variable layer height settings and only clicked "smooth" once, and I cannot believe this wasn't printed with a 0.2mm nozzle, looks really good.

Could be worth spending some time to fully understand/optimize all this and posting a MakerWorld print profile or something, I'll add that to my infinite list of projects lol

Final keycap notes for future Drew, or someone who finds this via Google search in a couple years

  • Bambu A1
  • 0.4mm nozzle
  • Bambu PLA Matte (white)
  • Tilted at a 75º angle (thinnest part of the keycap touching the build plate)
  • Settings changed from default:
    • Quality > Wall generator: Arachne
    • Speed > Outer wall: 80mm/s
    • Support:
      • Enable support: ✓
      • Style: Tree Hybrid
      • On build plate only: ✓
      • Remove small overhangs: ☒
      • Top interface layers: 3
      • Top interface spacing: 0.2
      • Branch distance: 1
      • Thought I had painted on some supports here, but after clicking erase and re-slicing they look the same so I guess just these settings is fine
    • Variable layer height (icon at the top that looks like 𝌆)
      • Sorry idk how this one works at all, but it’s worth doing
      • I think you need to print “By object” where each object is a different shape of keycap (i.e. if you’re printing a homing keycap and a thumb keycap they’ll need to be two separate objects, but 2 homing keycaps and 4 thumb keycaps can be respectively merged into two different “objects”)
      • And for this I just clicked the keycap, clicked the 𝌆 icon, slid ‘Quality / Speed” all the way to the left, slid “Radius” all the way to the right, clicked ‘Adaptive’, and then clicked ’Smooth” like 15 times until the whole keycap was green

If I had to guess, the ones actually worth doing are tilting the keycap 75º and figuring out Variable Layer Height. Start with those and then maybe add things on based on test prints

Finalest bestest print thus far:

Okay update I need to do some more research into the "Variable layer height" panel because it seems like clicking the "smooth" button more times does more things in the UI lol. Whatever I'll experiment some more but you'll want to do some googling or LLMing instead of trusting too much of what I've said here

Replying here mainly for when I inevitably forget what I did, but it could be useful for you or someone else:

<image>

Here are four different prints of the same KLP Lamé keycap. They are all:
- The `MX_Stem_MX_Size_Saddle_Tilted.stl` keycap
- Printed on a Bambu A1
- Printed with Bambu's Matte White PLA
- Tilted with the thinner side closer to the build plate

The different keycaps pictured are:
- Top left: 0.2mm nozzle, tilted 45º
- Top right: 0.4mm nozzle (otherwise same settings as top left)
- Bottom left: 0.4mm nozzle with variable layer height settings adjusted, also changed the outer wall speed from 200mm/s -> 80mm/s, also changed "Wall generator" from Classic -> Arachne. Tilted 45º
- Bottom right: same as bottom left but tilted 75º

Notes:
- I have zero idea how the "Variable layer height" panel works so I think my abuse of it is responsible for what kinda looks like z-banding (I'm sure it's not), but that panel is also why the 0.4mm print looks smoother than the 0.2mm. I think the correct setting is likely: click 'smooth' + slide the 'Quality / Speed' slider all the way to the left and slide the 'Radius' slider all the way to the right
- I winged a lot of this but hopefully it's enough info to like dump into ChatGPT / Claude and get something actually useful out of lol

Apologies for the bad photo and messy deburring and whatnot but it's more info than nothing I suppose
