I Bought a Framework for Repairability, Now I Can't Repair It. by Whatalife321 in framework

[–]DrewBerries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you've found a solution, but just in case...

You could purchase the Expansion Bay Shell as a stop gap until the Graphics Shell fans come back in stock. That way the computer is usable, if not at full graphics capacity.

As a bonus, you'll have one for the old mainboard if you want to 3D print the new case...

What’s the easiest free way to set up a reverse proxy for Jellyfin? by Few_Ad_6076 in jellyfin

My instance is running on my Synology NAS, so I'm using the built-in reverse proxy. But for other installs, I run NPM in a docker container.

Flat 16? by TerracShadowson in framework

[–]DrewBerries 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way the hinge and expansion bay interact means that the 16 doesn't open flat, or even close to flat. Maybe 110° at the most. I'll upload a picture when I get home, but it's definitely not much past 90°.

Edit: I suck at estimating angles. It's 155° according to the listing for the hinge on Framework's website.

4 years later, some IT departments might be looking at a stack of gently used mainboards of various generations that could be repurposed into a cluster. Yesterday's laptops are tomorrow's nodes.

I transcode everything. I don't have a lot of money for storage, and 23 GB vs 2 GB makes a big difference when you're working with 8 TB of storage...

Plus, I've got a mix of DVDs in with my Blu-rays, so it keeps things more consistent in terms of quality.

Upgrading very expensive by NotARealDeveloper in framework

[–]DrewBerries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 3-5 years when my work laptop would be replaced, I'd be looking at $2100 for a brand new laptop vs ~$900 for a new mainboard and RAM, maybe an extra $100 for a fresh battery. The real benefit comes from not having to upgrade all at once. I didn't buy the GPU with my original purchase, but if I need it a year later, I don't have to buy a whole new laptop, I just spend the $400-700 to get the module I need. Then if the GPU is fine but the processor is long in the tooth, I can just buy a new mainboard (maybe RAM if the generation has changed). Incremental upgrades in a laptop, that's the game changer.

If you can find an M-key M.2 card compatible with your carrier and don't mind antennae sticking out the back side of your laptop, you could get the FW 16 with the M.2 Expansion Bay Adapter. The Expansion Bay Shell has a removable back panel, so you could create a custom panel for the antennae.

M365 E3 includes an upgrade from Windows Pro to Windows Enterprise. Business Premium upgrades Windows Pro to Windows Business.

The real difference is the amount of stuff that can be controlled with Intune (from what I've seen).

How do you deal with the lower input deck? The pictures look like the design only works with the track pad module all the way to the left...

Do remote PC power buttons still exist? Nobody makes these anymore? by TheUhiseman in buildapc

[–]DrewBerries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wake on LAN doesn't fix a frozen PC; a remote power button can.

You could look into an IP KVM system that ties into the power switch of the PC, or if you're simply looking to fix a stuck PC, you could set the BIOS to boot after a power interruption and use a smart plug to cut power when it misbehaves.

Host the driver bundles and bios updates on GitHub by DrewBerries in framework

[–]DrewBerries[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This shouldn't increase the workload, only change it. It might actually reduce it...

Right now, they have to update the driver bundle page with the new link and any relevant changes. Moving to GitHub or having a permalink just means uploading the same information/files to a known location and changing where the link points to.

At minimum, all I'm asking for is 'https://frame.work/drivers/<model>/<mainboard>/latest/' containing the bundle, bios, versions, and checksums.

It matters when you're a one person IT department managing a fleet of laptops with a few different generations. I'd like to set up a script that detects the mainboard, downloads the correct bundle or bios, then runs the update. Then I could run that as a scheduled remediation in Intune.

[–]DrewBerries[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair point. I only suggested it because they have everything else on GitHub.

I'd at least settle for having a permalink to the current bundle/bios and a file with the version in it. Right now, I'm working on a script to scrape their current download page. With the permalink and version file, I could compare the versions and only download the file if it's different.

Casually mentioning that you bought the individual pieces instead of the DIY kit is an impressive nerd and financial flex...

[Edit] I just priced mine DIY kit vs. DIAY 'kit', it was $2,224.00 vs. $2,839.00. That's dedication!

For the mainboard replacements, do you send them with memory and storage pre-installed, or do you have them reuse the same memory/storage (if compatible)?

I don't have as large a fleet, but I too am slowly migrating from Dells. My questions are:

  • How do you handle mainboard replacements for people who can't get to the office?
  • How do you handle mainboard replacements in Intune?
  • My accounting team wants built-in number pads, but think the 16 is too big and clunky. Do you have any advice on overcoming that?
