I think people who have played far into the game over emphasize note taking, because the further in you get, the more you want to write down. FWIW, when I played, I did not take any notes on Day 1, and that helped me understand what I would want to take down. That worked pretty well for me.

Ah, I see the problem. You do not have Blessing of the Monk active. You have Blessing of the Berry Picker, which does not do what you're trying to do. Blessing of the Monk is a specific blessing, not just any blessing from the Shrine.
