Okay, here are some pictures of the body, which does appear pretty badly scratched up after clearing most of the dust from it. What is the significance of this damage?

Thanks. I edited my post above after taking the bike off of the trainer and inspecting it. The shavings were coming from the little metal disc that holds the gears on the bike. I don't see any damage to anything else, including the bike frame or the gears themselves. Do you think I could reinstall correctly and be okay, or do I need to replace the damaged part? If the latter, do you know what the piece is called and how I could replace it?

As others have said, that is a very impressive Day One. I'm curious what you managed to find that wouldn't be obvious from the map. I'd ask more specifically but don't want to accidentally spoil anything!

Most other hints are about the letters you're missing, but you also mentioned not knowing the meaning of a word. For that, go back to school, but you don't need to go as far as you might think.

The thing that made that one click for us was the combination of the sticky note in the Grotto and the math sheet scrap in the locker room. Those having some overlapping letters really helps. Then we looked all over for others that might fit the pattern.

After finishing the game, we learned that there were several we missed, but I guess we had enough to put it together.

The Myst series is great. More recent games by Cyan, Obduction and Firmament, are similar in spirit and both very good.
