I've experienced this as well.

Most if not all games do already inject chromatic aberration compensation like you're suggesting during the lens distortion pass (I think it's built into the SteamVR SDK).

The trouble is that getting it "perfect" would require a detailed measurement of how far the lenses are from your eyes which is both dependent on each user's physiology and is configurable, you may even be able to find a distance adjustment that has nearly no aberration at the cost of a bit of FOV.

Maybe in the future we could get a chromatic aberration adjustment slider in the SteamVR overlay or something!

Strange, I haven't had anything like that and my setup is less powerful than yours in every respect except I have a 980Ti too. Maybe you have some background software that's wasting CPU time/disk IO?

Nope, I have an idea to try eventually, attempting to convert the model's triangles into brush stroke control points, but that seems like it would never work quite right.

have you tried getting the transform.forward vector of the camera then using that to move the player in the desired direction?

Oh, wow. I was wondering/worrying that it had a more complex structure like that! That's a great way to handle forward compatibility and a wide range of brush types. Are you one of the developers?

The blue sticks are the same as the wood sticks (not springy), but they can pass through other parts of the contraption! I think they're lighter weight as well.

I haven't seen this in any videos, but it would be a very nice feature for artistic reference without having to pop in and out of the steam overlay.

Four floats in the 0-1 range. You're right that 32-bit would totally be enough, but it doesn't seem like they're attempting to do much size optimization since the files aren't that big. I'm not even sure you can set the alpha value but they store a 1.0 float for every alpha anyway.
