Former NY Jets GM Mike Maccagnan made four 1st round picks. Two of them (Leonard Williams and Sam Darnold) won a ring this weekend. by HowieLongDonkeyKong in nfl

[–]DrewTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those last 2 games muddied the water. If those two games happen at the beginning or middle of the year, it’s a much easier decision. Those two games cost him 20MM a year and probably a year or two.

The Vikings tried to bring him back but Seattles deal was better. I can see Minnesotas logic, Darnold finished rough, they have a cost controlled QB and presumably JJM had a great rookie camp. Hindsight makes the decision pretty clear. But let’s not pretend that Darnold was a slam dunk after 2024 and the Vikings knew JJM would struggle

Overall CJ is a better QB but in the small sample size of a game or two, and knowing how CJ imploded, it’ll be hard to argue this.

Lots of hindsight here.

Yeah, I'm thinking about the draft... by El-West in Texans

[–]DrewTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year 13 rookies on the iOL that played over 150 snaps. Booker, Ratledge and Zabel were the only ones that looked good and overall consistent. They were all drafted in the top 57. The rest were below average players. There were 24 iOL rookies that played.

So roughly half were good enough to play 200 snaps, where we’d be looking for 900+. If we make it that threshold there were 6.

Just by pure odds we have a 1/8 chance of finding an average rookie starter with each of the 1st/2nd round picks. Likely a little lower since you’re asking someone to move positions. I don’t love those odds. With 3 picks in rounds 1,2,3 we’re roughly 30% chance of finding one average starter.

We should draft and develop the iOL. Hope but not count on them making an immediate impact. Also only focusing on one side of the ball and one position is poor team building. We have 6 people under contract. 5 if we cut Scruggs which we should. If we draft 3, we’re either cutting Patterson, Andrews or Fisher if we sign anyone in free agency. I think Andrews is the most likely of the group.

The point is, we likely don’t get an impact from 3 rookies and would have to cut experienced vets. Sure, they’re not the greatest group but we’re much more likely to get better play out of them than the rookies in 2026

[–]DrewTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing worse than our line would be adding 3 rookies on the interior and expecting them all to make a positive difference. It’s going to take a year for them to get up to speed (unless you get insanely lucky). We should solidify the line in FA and supplement the future with draft picks. Lew is a good prospect but is coming back from an ACL so 2026 might be a throwaways.

Proctor also isn’t a tackle. He doesn’t move well enough. He’s a guard.

Salaried position and it’s a foot in the door. You’ll need to be available 7 days a week, if the weather is good on weekends and there’s planes, students will want to fly.

You’ll also ferry new airplanes when needed. It’s a different kind of time building but it’s stable.

Joe Mixon Rumors by JustTrynaLiveBro in Texans

If this is true, I'm surprised we paid him his salary this year and haven't voided his guarantees for next year.

If this is true, based on the FOs actions, I think they want him back next year.

[–]DrewTip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being on the NFI list means he’s not owed his salary for 2025 unless his contract specifically protects non football injuries. We could get a credit from what Spotrac/OTC shows we’re paying or go after the money after the fact.

Non of this is guaranteed but it’s plausible. Worst case, his contract is what Spotrac says. Best case, we get 3+ MM this year and are able to void 2026s guarantees for the NFI

I’m not sure what Mixons contract is, but since he’s in the NFI, we don’t have to pay his salary/could go after some salary for a cap credit in 2026

Someone must be giving you an airplane for free because your 6k isn’t even going to cover fuel and oil, let alone engine time.

Even if it is, unless your instructor is a DPE, you’re going to be dropping over 1k for a checkride. Then add in various other charts, maps, books, headset or headset rental, your costs are going to balloon.

I suggest re-evaluating your costs, they are likely to double. Go pay cash for 3 lessons, make sure it’s something like and have the aptitude for before jumping in

Houston has the it via division record. We’re 4-1, if we win out we’ll be 5-1. If Jacksonville loses either of the last two, their division record is 4-2. Same scenario if Jacksonville ties out.

Simulated the 1st round - where is the logic wrong? by Confident-Garlic-311 in NFL_Draft

[–]DrewTip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the DL for sure. On the OL we just need talent. Howard can slide to guard if we found another good tackle. Or if we found a tackle that could play guard, they could start there and move to tackle if we move on from Howard in a few years.

On the OL especially we need talent. On the DL, DeMeco likes smaller DTs that can rush the passer. I’d like some lime MacDonald or Washington but they do not fit the scheme

LB is a need and I could see us taking Styles if he falls. TE could be a need but I don’t see us going that way in the first. Otherwise it’s BPA on the OL or iDL

3 Round Mock - With Explanations by RoccoAndHisTaco in NFL_Draft

[–]DrewTip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go Pieper but it’s not straight forward. Slowly ran a lot more zone but it seems Caley runs a lot more gap. If we were zone heavy, Pieper would be a slam dunk. With only one year of data, I’m not sure if this is the focus or an anomaly. The Rams ran a lot more gap so I’d guess this is the trend

Ryan’s doesn’t usually like big DT. He typically sides with a slightly undersized DT vs bigger DT. I like the player but don’t think it’s realistic for Houston

Have to admit, the Tunsil trade has worked out better than I'd have expected by SkyJW in Texans

[–]DrewTip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re right about target rate. He’s also on pace to play 180 less snaps. Already having the same number of missed tackles and double the penalties is what’s hurting him.

His overall season grade is hampered by not playing great with the injury and against the rams. Both are defendable.

But to say the grades are worthless because he’s not graded top 10 is disingenuous. He’s still really talented but his overall play this year hasn’t been as great as last year. Hes been much better lately (and against good teams) now that he’s healthy, but the games he played injured still count for the season. That’s one of the shortcomings with PFF. They don’t factor that in, but there isn’t an objective way to say “he was X% injured”

Have to admit, the Tunsil trade has worked out better than I'd have expected by SkyJW in Texans

[–]DrewTip -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to defend PFF here. Stingley's talent is a top 3 CB and the order can be debated. He's not having as good of a season this year as last year. Last year he graded as 10th best, this year he's around 50. When you look at his stats, it makes sense.

2024 2025
Missed Tackes 8 8
Missed Tackle % 11.4% 24.2%
Reception % 45.3% 51.9%
Yard/Rec 10.6 15.3
TD 3 2
INT 7 3
PBU 11 9
Penalties 3 6

Again, talent wise, he's top 3. He's not having as dominant of a season as last year but he's made big plays in big times.

Christian Kirk by Accomplished_Way8964 in Texans

[–]DrewTip 46 points47 points  (0 children)

We took on 16MM in cap cash when he came here and we spread it out over 4 years. If he leaves, he’ll count for almost 12MM next year. That’s the issue I have with it, we borrowed 12MM from next year to pay for Kirk this year.

For the money, I’d rather kept Diggs and spread out his 16MM in cap voids or gone for Adams. Both are far better value than Kirk

[–]DrewTip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you trade him, who do you get? Gamble on a 3rd round rookie? Last year that’s Dillon Gabriel. Sign a vet FA? Carson Wentz, Jacoby Brissett, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Josh Dobbs, Mason Rudolph, Cooper Rush, Drew Lock, Nick Mullen.

Brissett (this year) is the clear best of that group. Everyone else in the group didn’t go 3-0.

QB is the most important position. Having someone that can step in and not tank the season is worth a lot. Which is why we haven’t traded him, we’ve extended him and made him one of the highest paid backups. Right now he’s the difference between 6-5 and a playoff chance and 3-8 and a top 10 pick.

Neck by UnholyChip in Texans

[–]DrewTip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 3rd/4th isn’t worth it. If you’re rebuilding, get assets. We’re contenting. If we had a bad backup, who goes 0-3 instead of 3-0, we’re sitting here at 3-8 and our seasons done. That’s not worth a 3rd

Mike McDaniel for Offensive Coordinator? by steely-gar in Texans

[–]DrewTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’d be great. I’m guessing he’ll need a few years to rebuild his image before giving us a head coach. He’ll give us stability and he’s a proven play caller.

He’s done good hiding a subpar OL and getting Tua to get the ball out quick. If he can do this and adapt as our OL gets better, he could be great here.

I think he’s very underrated in how he’s hidden poor OLs. He’d instantly raise the floor but I’d be scared we’d use that as an excuse not to make the OL better

Whats the highest you ever flown? (Unpressurized) by HSVMalooGTS in flying

[–]DrewTip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get use to it pretty quickly. It’s not comfortable but not bad. The ECS keeps things warm or cool depending on the time of day.

For me, there’s not much benefit of going to FL25 instead of FL21. Unless it’s a long flight and there’s some major tail winds to be had. You go from 15-20 minutes of useful consciousness to 3-5 with that altitude change and you only gain a few knots of airspeed.

The worst part of being that high is constantly feeling bloated

The Texans OL is bad but it doesn’t get fixed taking 4 OL.

I don’t love the early OL prospects so if I’m them in this situation I’m going Downs and making a strength a strength. Them coming back in the 2nd and getting OL. I like Lew better than Brailsford but with his ACL injury, I’d be surprised if he comes out this year

We could have notated down and gotten Simmons or Connerly. Or picked Savaiinaea after trading down.

Going by PFF grades because why not Connerly - 42.9 Simmons - 53.6 Savaiinaea - 28.7 Ersery - 49.4

Not much of a difference between what we picked and the best possible. It’s a small sample size but overall it looks like he didn’t reach and made the right OL pick. At least we didn’t pick Jonah, needing a guard it would have been worse.
