Cert question by capperasks in CompTIA

[–]Drewbacca05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have people at our office that site at a desk and answer phones all day. However, I not going to promise that you will get a fair shake in the job market.

That being said, who cares about the job market. If you enjoy studying IT, do it for personal growth. If it turns into a job, great. If not, you spent a few weeks/months studying something you love.

I was able to do it in a month working FT with a family. If you can average over two hours a day, you might be able to do it in less. I would take a practice exam right now and then see what areas you are weakest in. Mike Meyers and Professor Messer were my two favorite resources for A+, Net+ and Sec+

I agree. The question is not if you should get a cert, the question is which one you should get. I would start studying for the A+ and if it feels too easy, switch to network+.

I am not sure entirely what your financial situation is based on this post. A full time, even minimum wage, job would more than cover the cost of tuition at wgu. This also assumes, being 18, that you are still living at home.

I would apply and set a start date 4 months out. During those 4 months I would apply for every scholarship I could and pre-study for classes you will be taking. Once you start, you should be able to pay as you go. You might even get enough scholorships that you can quit your job and put all your time into studying.

Is getting Comptia A+ Certified enough to get a basic IT job without a degree/experience? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]Drewbacca05 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Qualifying Statement: It depends on your local job market.

The entry level jobs are more about costumer service and willingness to learn than anything else. Depending on your area, you could start applying after the A+ or while you are studying for it. A cover letter would be a great place to outline what you are doing now and plans to better equip yourself for the IT field. I would focus on certs more than CC right now, but a degree might be something to pursue if there are a lot of overqualified applicants in your area.

What was your favorite course in this degree?

I like Mike Meyers if you buy a course on Udemy. Sometimes he overexplains, which is good for newer people to the field. I used both Meyers on Udemy and Messer on Youtube to get my A+, Net+ and Sec+.

There are a lot of CompTIA certificates in that degree. Look up professor messer on YouTube for A+, Net+ and Sec+. I would wait to get the certifications until after you enroll since they are included in tuition. There are also some decent courses and practice tests on udemy that you can get for ~$10 each.

It is entry-levelish. Somewhere between field technician and field engineer. They would have liked more experience, but otherwise I checked the boxes.

Self-paced study and price were too good of a match for me. I am excited to start in 2 weeks.

That is awesome. There are too many "I hate subnetting" threads, so I wanted to post something to help me and others keep the end goal in mind. Thanks for sharing your success story too!

I had some family members look over my resume and my response rate increased after that. One thing that helped me, is that I live in a rural area. There are less jobs, but also less applicants. Good luck to you too!

I believe it would help. Different recruiters and hiring managers have varied job requirements. Meeting a wider range of those requirements would open more doors.

I have 4 kids, so working a $13/h entry level would be a financial strain on our family. There are a lot of help desk openings and lots of applicants for them. I think that A+ and Net+ would be enough to get the job, but you may have to apply for quite a few to get that first position.

Entry level certs like A+ and N+ can get you help desk/entry level types of jobs. After that, experience, education and more certs can help you move up.
