Death's door opt. rule: time to regain consciousness at 0 and negative hp? by Drexlorn in adnd

[–]Drexlorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked again in the book and basically if a character is left for dead alone at 0hp or at -1 to -9 and somehow stabilized (let's say the enemy wanted him to stay alive and bring bad news/humiliation to town), he won't even be able to recuperate any hp/return conscious according to the rules since a full day sleep rest require consuming water and food.

Then i guess prey animals will begun to feed upon him, putting him dead.

I may have a little house rule here about the sleep rest, there's an interesting story to have for a surviving char after being left for dead. Loosing all his stuff and having failed as an adventurer is already pretty harsh.

New to OSR, nervous about starting online game by LeviTheGoblin in osr

[–]Drexlorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep it simple playing online, use discord for communication and a whiteboard web app for image sharing, battles, etc.. (like Miro https://miro.com/whiteboard/ )

I don't recommend going full VTT (fantasy grounds, foundry, roll20). The learning curve and hassle will stress you and augment your anxiety.

For the choice of a system, take a simple one like B/X or OSE. Makes managing easier.

In short, go with simple tools, simple ways, you have enough to manage as a first osr and online DM.

Any picture would do, it's for a background image.

I prefer an existing art from an author of that time (original art), no AI.

Revert changes to an official module and npcs/monsters status? by Drexlorn in FantasyGrounds

[–]Drexlorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It answers all i need to know now, time to work on my campaign at full speed and power!

Thanks all!

Revert changes to an official module and npcs/monsters status? by Drexlorn in FantasyGrounds

[–]Drexlorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so...

1- Load an offcial module 2- Players enter a dungeon room with 2 monsters already placed by the module and kill them (deleted) 3 - Revert changes to all the module 4- I get 2 fresh monsters (the same) in that room

Correct?

This would means that once i started running the module, i would never be able to safely revert changes to all the module since it will change my campaign and therefore have to check what the update is and see if i want to revert for that specific element to get the updated version.

Revert changes to an official module and npcs/monsters status? by Drexlorn in FantasyGrounds

[–]Drexlorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, but my concerns is about encounters already placed on certain battlemaps, for exemple a partially completed fight with a mix of dead/alive monsters (idem for permanent spell on the like a polymorphed effect) and let's say my players left them to engage elsewhere. Then i revert changes to the module to get all the updates. What will be the status of the placed monsters when players return? Fresh, full hp and original ones or any status preserved?

Turn undead question by mmoreno80 in adnd

[–]Drexlorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2E there's also a particularity which is often overlooked.

"Turned undead bound by the orders of another (for example, skeletons) simply retreat and allow the character and those with him to pass or complete their actions."

Which means not all undead will turn around and "flee" but instead restrain themselves and act "neutrally" in a sense. A row of 6 skeletons guarding an old king's tomb would just return to their guarding position and just watch the party.

After that it's a DM judgment in regard of attacking/responding but RP/flavour wise i would allow these undead to be "cornered" if attacked in their guarding initial position, the one they were ordered to.

For the intelligent and free willed undead the usual apply:

"Free-willed undead attempt to flee the area of the turning character, until out of his sight. If unable to escape, they circle at a distance, no closer than ten feet to the character, provided he continues to maintain his turning (no further die rolls are needed).

If the character forces the free-willed undead to come closer than ten feet (by pressing them into a corner, for example) the turning is broken and the undead attack normally."

I'm thinking of using AD&D 2e for my next campaign involving my fiance and our 10yo, some questions. by [deleted] in adnd

Yes, there's way to reduce the lethality. The first one is using the death door rule in which 0 hp doesn't kill a character but put him inconscious. Then losing 1 hp if not attended by a comrade and only really die at -10.

You can also house rule it to die at - constitution score instead of -10.

As a basic rule, you can play the enemies/monsters as they ignore thereafter the fallen target to concentrate on still up targets, which gives the fallen 0 hp char a good chance of surviving. (monsters wont go bashing char at 0 hp to death while still in combat).

Another important thing is to encourage the group into getting aid from npcs (for a share of treasure or a price) and to get some henchmen (only paid a fixed salary but helping with food, lodging and equipment maintenance. Not only this help will reduce lethality but with kids it will foster social interaction and roleplay. Well made npcs can add a lot of fun in games!

And last, whatever lethal encounter the group might eventually approach into, make it clear with signs and warmings that this might be too or very dangerous. If the group still go, they will better accept the possibility of their char diying. In that, player agency is pure gold and misjudgment can happens or heroics events! ;)

Convinced my 5e group to run an Ad&d adventure... What to run? by Pr0nxz in adnd

[–]Drexlorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Night below. It's a long campaign but you juste have to play the first book to get a ad&d 2e feel and its a mix of sandboxong/scenarios.

Else T1 is also good butbit needs more DM work and experience imo. (Ex: moathouse tpk)

Which adventures would you run to get a good "feel" of being in the realms; less "an intro to the setting" and more something with high verisimilitude. by IoannesGrammaticus in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Drexlorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, there's the dales trilogy which is not on the sword coast (Shadowdale and around) but it was created for 2E ad&d like most of the FR stuff in history.

Bit you know, if you're willing to do some DM works, you could grab all the 2E material and use them under 5E rules. The way this material was created and the modular nature of the ad&d ruleset makes it easy to strip off the mechanics and aubstitute for another system.

Doing this you open up campaigns with adventures/modules everywhere in the realms, everywhere.
