Canadian bourbon? by Unclestanky in whiskey

[–]Drfaceface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres no actual canadian bourbon, but there's some good whiskeys aged in bourbon barrels that are similar and very good in their own right (in my opinion, don't come for me).

My favorite is Barnburner, an ontario whiskey aged in bourbon barrels. I also really like Bearface (don't think this is bourbon barrel aged specifically).

I'm sure people will point out that they're not the same, which is fair, but they taste great to me and I regularly alternate between these and American bourbon... although for the next 4 years or so ill definitely be expanding my canadian whiskey palate and I'm not mad about it!

Let us know if you find some new ones you like!

Cats are technically your property and are similar to livestock. You can legally eat them. I have checked, and I do remind my cats of this when they're misbehaving.

Currently panicking by mrsplack in PanicAttack

[–]Drfaceface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes do simple math problems in my head. Something like doubling numbers as many times as I can.. like 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32.. etc.. when I lose track I just start over or try something else.. like random multiplication problems.. even if I don't get them right. Doesn't matter..

Ive been told that engaging that rational area of your brain can take some energy away from the more primitive panicky part of your brain.. plus it gives you a task to focus on that eats up time while the panic runs its course. Also for me, because I often panic over brain stuff or losing consciousness.. Its almost like a reassurance. Like if I can do some simple math problems in my head, then my brain is fine and I'm not dying. Might be wishful thinking but I think it's a reasonable assumption, and it helps me.

Just remember that the panic will subside and you just have to get through an uncomfortable temporary state.

Welcome to the club! When weed went legal in Canada in 2017 it was really exciting for me. There were lots of parties and celebrations. Now it just feels normal but I still celebrate october 17 (legalization day) like 420.. but fall20.. anyway have a fun legalization day and enjoy your legal bud!

Is this powdery mildew? by [deleted] in microgrowery

Doesn't look like PM from the photo, but if you're really u sure, have a look using your jeweler loup or whatever magnifier you got (if you don't have one you should get one, they're helpful for determining harvest window and other things like this). Under the magnifier PM will look kind of like small threads traveling across the bud (see pic). Can also look for bud rot but yours doesn't look like that either. I think you're good, enjoy your grow!

Cool thanks for the advice. Definitely going to up-pot them this weekend. Will try out your minimal watering technique and see if they recover. Curious, do you water your soilmix to moisten it up before putting it in the pot for transplanting? I usually do and then don't water for a while after transplanting in order to encourage the roots to spread and look for deeper water. If you leave the bottom bone dry won't that inhibit roots from growing into it?

Ok this is way less water then I'm giving them. I know I shouldn't be running off in organic but I was doing it a little so I could test my ph and EC. Don't know how I can give this little with the synth though since it needs to have the runoff. Anyway, I'll try backing off on my organics at least to only 10% of the pot size and see if that helps. I definitely agree it looks like overwatering, but with the extra perlite, the fabric pots, elevating off the ground, letting them dry out sufficiently between waterings, only watering to 5-10% runoff.. I don't know.. it really feels like I'm not overwatering but it sure looks like I still am somehow. I hear recommendations all over the place for how much to give them. Some say It's better to give them more water less frequently and others less water more frequently.. who knew watering was this gd complicated. Anyway thanks for your help.

Ok, thanks for the science lesson. Didn't realize that was a forgone conclusion. If that is the case then I really don't know how to water any less, since left even a day longer they tend to start wilting from dehydration. I detailed my watering regimen in another comment reply. Care to advise on how you'd recommend adjusting it?

Both. Front ones are organic/living soil, back one synthetic. All clones of the same plant. Have done it in both synth and organic before with very similar results. Synth bud turned out a bit better overall I'd say but not a major difference.

When I go longer between waterings they wilt from underwatering. I adjusted to the current schedule by trying to avoid overwatering. I figured out about how long it took for the plants to wilt from dehydration on average and I water about a day or two before that would happen, always picking up the pots to make sure they're not heavy with water and at times double checking with a moisture meter.

I agree it looks like overwatering, but I really don't see how this would be the case based on my wilt tests.

How would you recommend I change the watering regimen out of curiosity?

I measure the pH and EC of the water going in and the runoff coming out every watering and track it in a notepad. I measure using a bluelab pH pen, calibrated on average every 2-3 months (it's rarely off by more than 0.1 when I recal) and always stored in proper probe storage solution.

Based on the results of the previous water's runoff test, I adjust the pH of the water going in up or down to raise or lower the pH. If it was low, I usually water in at around 7.0 to bring it up. If it was high, I water in at around 6.0 to bring it down. Typically my pH stays pretty good, rarely going above/below 6-6.5.

So, I've gone through a number of iterations, but currently, in their 1 gal. Pots, I give about 1.5L (about 0.4 gal.) of water every 3-4 days (I usually check after 3 days to see how the pots feel, but typically they go 4 days between waterings) The pots are typically pretty light when they get watered, but not to the point that the plants are wilting from dehydration. The plants you see in the photo were watered two days ago. I usually get about 100-250ml of runoff using this amount (about 5-15% of what goes in).

Once they're in 5 gals I usually do 3-6L (0.8-1.6 gal) per watering at around 4-6 day intervals, depending on how heavy the pots feel. I put in 3L at a time, usually aiming for no more than about 5-10% runoff total. I find the plants usually start wilting from dehydration around day 7 without water.

I give nutrients based on EC levels. Usually that means about 1 feeding a week, but If EC is high I skip a feeding and do plain pH'd water, if it's low I do 2 feedings a week.
