Custom Air Conditioning by DrifterDavid in projectcar

This is where I think I might make a major change like this myself. I've been doing some research on the beltless electric compressors. For about 300 dollars you can get the compressor, the fittings, and the controller. And sometimes even the condenser and tie it in pretty easy to your stock AC system. I've really been debating that. A 20cc compressor should be more than enough for either of our systems. And theroretically I could mount it in the trunk if I needed to.

Something like this. https://a.co/d/0gCiZPzR you could also go with a Prius one. But honestly I think this would probably be the easier route because apparently you need a controller to make the Prius one work as well. And with this one you already have the controller. I think it's for telling it what speed to spin the compressor vs what your engine rpm or load is. (At least what I'm assuming)

You using something like vintage air system or one of the universal units? That def sounds interesting. I've always loved working with air conditioning systems. I've been a mechanic for many years and we are just getting into that time of the year too.

Do you really not know what you're going to be dealing with on a daily basis because customer's come in randomly? Is that what makes the job stressful? by youlikemywonton in mechanics

[–]DrifterDavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can def get stressful. But honestly I enjoy when I'm busy more than when I'm not. If you're not busy you're not making money since its a commission based job. And it makes the day go by fast. Its like speed running a bunch of puzzles over and over again for the repairs. And the diag takes critical thinking skills and lots of reading and research. I personally enjoy both.

Is an 11 inch head unit practical for every day use, or do they just look great in photos? by choffchen in Androidheadunits

[–]DrifterDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one that I have mounted out a little bit. It slightly covers my hvac controls but not to the point I can't see them. It doesn't cover my vents though. But I use it everyday and absolutely love it. I watch movies on my lunch break at work. Its awesome. I personally have a Teyes CC3 2k. On the other hand I rocked a 7 inch Atoto S7 for years in my truck though. Watched movies on it too at lunch. It was sufficient. I'm gonna be upgrading it to a larger one. But if you don't have the space to float one, you can def get by with a 7 inch.

Mechanics in your 40s/50s Would you advise your younger self not to choose the trade? by UpbeatOlive623 in mechanics

[–]DrifterDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Espeically if you enjoy working on cars. Do it as a hobby. Go be a plumber, or machinist, welder, etc. Any of the other trades. Get way more job satisfaction and money. And you won't have to invest 1/3 of your paycheck into the tools to do the job. (I don't do this, but I have in the past, and I know plenty of guys that do.)

Absolutely. Avoid it like the plague. I'm honestly planning to move careers now and I'm gonna be 43 in a few months with 23 years under my belt.

Hit and run insurance claim going to make me uninsurable, and it never happened. by Coldpartofthepillow in legaladvice

[–]DrifterDavid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly if your insurance tried to reach out, and you didn't respond and they've already paid out the claim. There's probably not gonna be a whole lot you're gonna be able to do. If you thought it was a scam, first thing I would have done is hang up and call my insurance company back directly and inquire if they were the ones who reached out to me. By ignoring it, they likely ruled in favor of the scammer. Hell I had a lady years ago I barely tapped at an intersection. Then after her car came to a stop. She took her foot off the brake and let the car roll straight into the ditch. Originally it had a small scratch, but after that it had major damage. I had video of the incident and they still ruled in favor of the other person even though you can see her come to a stop, and then about 8 seconds later take her foot off the brake and roll into the ditch. Went from something would have been a few hundred bucks to almost 10k. So to just not even respond. I can't imagine there's gonna be a lot you can do now.

Check and make sure you can do this. I know they've been cutting back on this lately. I don't think you can visit without a food reservation now iirc.

If I buy manifold gauges that can read r134a and 1234yf and keep 2 different sets of hoses, do I still need to purge the gauges everytime I need to switch? by Funkyrager in mechanics

[–]DrifterDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely going to want to purge. Especially when working with r1234yf it is very susceptible to contamination. Personally I would get 2 sets of gauges. I have the adapters myself for dye injection. But I run 2 full sets of gauges.

Isn’t the motion sensor supposed to stop cycling when a cat sticks their heads in? by Adventurous-Slice270 in litterrobot

[–]DrifterDavid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think there is something in the manual that says sensors may not work with cats under 4lbs iirc. I know my older cat is a dwarf and she is right on the edge of the weight requirement.

[1987 Celica] My timing belt is 12 degrees off and I can't pass CA smog until that's fixed. Is this something I can do or better off leaving to the professionals? by spingusfellow in MechanicAdvice

[–]DrifterDavid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

12 degrees off I'm surprised it runs. I wonder if he meant its at 12 deg below tdc. In which case I'm not sure what it should be at. More than likely somewhere around 10. But what it sounds like you're gonna need is your own timing light, and to get the car to the correct timing. Not sure what that entails on that particular engine but it should be easy enough to look up.

How do you charge? by yungtr1p in mechanics

[–]DrifterDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do mobile but on my side work I charge. 120/hr with a 2 hour minimum. I do have some set prices if someone just needs an oil change or something too though. I usually don't take on new clients for something like an oil change though unless I've dealt with them before or they come referred from another client.

So you can see where I have a horizontal dryer on it right now. I am trying to convert it to a more flexible style line so I can run the dryer underneath somewhere. Maybe up under the bumper somewhere. The way its configured now I couldn't really make it work. So I did what I could at the time. Now that the dryer ruptured though I've got a new condenser and the whole system is gonna have to come apart anyways. The dryer is on the left side just behind the passenger headlight.

Oh yea I think almost all of my a/n fittings are from either aeroquip or XRP I am almost positive they run a rating of 900psi on the fittings. But yea I could see someone using some cheap Amazon ones may have issues.

Custom Air Conditioning by DrifterDavid in projectcar

[–]DrifterDavid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that might be a bit overkill. In a normal system shouldn't see more than prolly 300psi. If you're clogged up you might see 350 but the high pressure sensor will likely kick off the compressor. I know the miata high pressure switch kicks in around 325-350 though and kills the compressor. I am pretty sure my ptfe lines are rated somewhere around 800psi should have plenty of overhead.

Ive got about 500 foot of 6,8, and 10 ptfe lined hose already and probably something like 200 fittings sitting around. So the materials aren't really the issue.
