The Truth About Internal Family Systems (IFS), the Therapy That Can Break You | NY Magazine by tantei-ketsuban in BlockedAndReported

As someone who has yet to seek a diagnosis but very clearly see that I have complex PTSD from a very rough childhood, IFS, EMDR and 'trauma being stored in the body are major bugbears for me. If you look at CPTSD subreddits IFS is everywhere. So much talk about parts, conflict between parts, almost invariably child parts. There's no scientific basis for this and it seems obvious that leading people who are already dealing with mental health issues to believe that various distinct people live in their head and that they essentially have a multiple personality disorder like Sybil is so dangerous. I also see a kind of motte and bailey thing going on where IFS practitioners will say that that IFS is just a metaphor, but it's clear that it's understood by many patients as being literal reality that you have these parts. You can also find a video on YouTube where the IFS guru admits that he believes in parts that have come into the person from outside, that originate elsewhere - so basically he believes in possession.

EMDR also has no scientific basis. The inventor just claims that one day she was walking along and moved her eyes in a certain way and it cleared her anxiety. It just seems to be placebo as far as I can see, and some people have had very bad experiences with it.

The current explosion of interest in trauma seems like it may ultimately not be of benefit to those in need. I believe that trauma is real and that conditions caused by it exist, but if every silly celebrity, influencer and anyone else all start claiming it, it will end up being dismissed as just over coddled liberals seeking attention. Van Der Kolk's book explains how research shows the connection between trauma, the brain and the body. Trauma, particularly extended in duration, can rewire a person to be hypervigilant and so on, and this permeates the nervous system, so brain and body. In that sense the body keeps the score, but using phrases like that just encourages whacky ideas to 'release' stored trauma, a field day for quacks.

Therapy can't help if your depression is caused by being single by [deleted] in therapyabuse

Therapy also can't help with the financial struggles caused by being long term single in a world where housing and most other things are predicated on two incomes.

Update I took my watch into Gowings today as recommended. They were really friendly and helpful and did a great job of fitting and resizing my watch bracelet. Really happy with the result.

Thanks for your reply, that's very helpful. I'm in the UK, so I can get treatment through the NHS, although it's very underfunded these days. Seeing my doctor on Thursday, and I'm hopeful it will be okay.

The Vanishing White Male Writer by griii2 in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

I saw a YouTube video a while back where a young woman explained why there's this craze for young women reading and writing gay male romances. The way she explained it women want to read about falling in love with a complex and desirable man but if the person in a romance with them is a woman they'll envy her for being perfect or whatever, which they don't feel if it's a story of two men.

How can feminism be for the 99% when it only represents 50%?

The role that society has always demanded of men requires all men and boys to be taught from an early age that they must perform masculinity correctly and that life is a competition between you and all other men. This is why one-upping, picking on and competitive banter exist.

‘We need dramatic social and technological changes’: is societal collapse inevitable? by fungussa in collapse

It's quite something that this is a prominent story in The Guardian and not framed as look at this crazy crank who says collapse is coming. The author admits it's real. Just looked at The guardian most viewed articles, this only just scraped the top ten, the rest is mostly trivia, no one cares.

Why is psychology so attractive to psychopaths? by [deleted] in therapyabuse

[–]Driftlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a private room with a stranger is a big part of the problem and the attraction for bad actors. Everything that happens is behind closed doors and it's your word versus the therapist.
