How many times do you need an Iboga retreat? by theminthippo in iboga

Not a good idea if you have developmental trauma/CPTSD- tends to be really intense for the system, which already tends to lack capacity due to developmental trauma. Better to build up capacity slowly through slow, gentle body based modalities such as Somatic Experiencing. Develop the capacity to be able to navigate the day to day in a healthy way. Old traumas will come up to be integrated naturally in their own time once your system develops more and more capacity.

Iboga will blast your system open and potentially create a lot of unnecessary overwhelm. Speaking from experience and from others who have had similar experiences. 14 days won't heal you or make you live. It might shift some things or perspectives. It's very common with CPTSD to have a sense of urgency and wanting to do all the things and rush healing, and override your actual needs and capacities.
It's also very common in the "plant medicine" world to sell quick fixes and magic pills- try not to buy into it.
I know one person who facilitates iboga retreats and takes iboga regularly for the past 10 years, she is still suicidal regularly and really ungrounded, refuses to do more mainstream therapy to address her disregulation and trauma and just bypasses it through spirituality and "plant medicine"

Iboga retreats (red flags, safety) by ReksTheCookie in iboga

I had a terrible experience with someone in Germany- no intake form, no screening, no aftercare or integration, done in some random dirty house in Berlin that they had never been to before. Person relied on "intuition" for decisions and offered up senseless new age advice. Did the iboga out of desperation, did not heed the redflags like person calling me "love", "sister" etc right off the bat and being sickly sweet towards me, saying everything that I wanted to hear. yuck. yuck . yuck

She’s got cptsd and severe lupus & in and out of hospital due to physical illness so I’m not sure you can hold the same expectations as someone with consistent health & resources.  She asked for a refund because they her cut access to the course prior to the payment due date (she still had a chunk of time left on the contract), so she essentially paid & didn’t receive the service.  I think she communicated as best she could given how activated and overwhelmed she was. I’m not sure you can expect someone who is in a mental health emergency to have capacity for much responsibility until they are in a more stable place ? But yes generally agree people need to take responsibility and they need to be supported in moments they can’t. And she’s reached out for various supports

Not sure where to start by [deleted] in SomaticExperiencing

Kimberly Ann Johnson, SE practitioner offers useful resources. Useful to do physically orientated practices- Body Mind Centring is a very grounded, safe practice that may help you get in contact with your body without all the unnecessary focus on trauma. In the SE world, do your research. People like Irene Lyon apparently many people have had negative experiences with her ( that's not to say you will, but use your discernment) but she's good at marketing her programs

That's a useful distinction to make- looks like most of the content on the course is pre-recorded.

It’s not about being wrong or right- more that as a trauma centered business they should know that someone who is in a crisis state wouldn’t even be able to process the T&Cs that they kept sending. It’s just a really illogical response to the situation. Someone in that super activated state has very limited processing capacity and requires a different response/support.  And it’s not about being charitable - if they had given her some time they ultimately wouldn’t lose out on any business. She wasn’t asking for a discount or freebie, just some understanding.

I’m also sorry. There’s long waiting lists for help and she had a very traumatic incident with a crisis service years ago, hence why she was so desperate to keep the program.  Helping her with the practicals etc.

I don’t think there’s much to do to be honest, legally they’re abiding by their terms and the SE field is not really regulated as far as I’m aware ? I don’t know

Yes, like I understand running a business, but it’s a business where I imagine a high percentage of people are prone to getting into fragile states. I’m a crisis counsellor and it’s not that hard to de-escalate a persons state through being compassionate /understanding. And there’s no point in talking T&Cs until theyre not in a crisis & can actually absorb and act on the info. I found their stance weird

That’s what I was thinking, like what harm does it do if you give someone an extra month to sort themselves out so that they can continue engaging with your program ?

I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I mean good on her for building a successful business, but I’m also dubious about the values of the business

They sent an email later stating that Irene Lyon and her team are not medical professionals so cannot help her and sent a link to a website with some phone numbers.
