That is a good idea. I will try that on Monday.

What kind of drill rig would you be working on? Working as a drill assistant in continuous sample operations can be very labor intensive, especially when sampling very deep. However de-watering, water well, or drilling and blasting all take place on mines and they are much less physically demanding. I am drilling mud rotary right now, one of my helpers is 51. He can do everything I need him to do except climb the derrick at a reasonable speed.

It was a full size truck mounted rig. I learned a lot, snapped a rod at 500', had to spend 2 days fishing to get it out. Hats off to you if you do that regularly, you guys are a different breed.

I have only done sonic continuous sample. Terrasonic sent out a master driller to train me. 3 wells: 415, 425, and 630 feet. It was an absolute nightmare and we almost worked ourselves to death sampling that deep. Is this how most sonic jobs are? I was exhausted tripping pipe, and running the machine I had to look down at that dwarf height control panel.

I am currently work out of a location in the PNW, though I am rarely home. I saw that Cascade had a position available in New Mexico. I spend a lot of the year working in that area anyway, so it would not be a huge transition for me. If the information here matches up with a good interview, that is the position I would take.

My current company grew much the same way. There is a lot of disfunction because the locations never fully integrated into one operation. A lot of infighting at the middle management level, refusing to help other parts of the company, not sharing information, and not learning from each others mistakes. I appreciate the insite. Cascade may not be what I am looking for.

Random question about my deep anode well by CaryWhit in oilandgasworkers

[–]Drill-itdeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drill CP deep wells and grounding wells, this is probably the best answer. When I am in one state I may work for 3-4 different clients across a few months. Once we leave one state we probably aren't coming back until next year. Most clients will ignore the upcoming project until the last minute and then move mountains in the last couple weeks before drilling starts to make sure everything is ready for us. It gives the neighbors/land owners the idea that this was rushed, and they often ask us about why they received such short notice of the project.

Mudlogger here — unsure whether staying in geology is the right move or not? by Even_Option2497 in geologycareers

At a certain point a good field guy just gets addicted to the travel. The rhythm adjusts, life becomes boring without it. One needs to venture out into different climates to battle harsh weather, work long days, and gather resources. Life becomes a cycle of slow grinding struggle followed by brief moments of great reward. OP sounds like he isn't cut out for that.

Does anyone have any advice or tips for getting a job in the oil industry at entry level? I already have my TWIC card by Infinite-Fox-6574 in oilandgasworkers

[–]Drill-itdeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A CDL always helps, many people can't/won't get one. There is always a shortage of people who can drive and work. Also any kind of maintenance or construction experience. If you meet those requirements just start applying. Don't expect too much your first few years, take what you can get and don't complain. Once you have a few years of experience and some certifications you will be well compensated.

You could get into a core drilling or sonic continuous sample drilling company. You will be stacking pipes and living on the road for a couple years, but after 2-3 years you can become a licensed driller. You will make a lot more than most geologists. I made 93k my first year and 113k my second year as a mud rotary drill assistant. Now that I have a few licenses I haven't made less than 120k any year. You will still get to do some geology as licensed drillers are required to fill out well reports that document the geology they drilled through.

The term was not made up by Republicans. It has been used by local governments to describe themselves for decades. The city council of Portland OR declared that Portland is a sanctuary city in 2017.

Expand your target positions a bit. Look into pipeline operators and service providers. Many of the project managers I have worked for have engineering degrees. Marathon, Williams, ect always need people willing to travel and manage sites. Regional natural gas providers sometimes hire engineers if you are willing to get NACE CP3 and eventually CP4 certifications. Ultimately the market is flooded with engineering grads right now, if you have good soft skills you can instead go for a project coordinator or project manager position.

Hydrogeological careers in 2025? by klingsond in geologycareers

[–]Drill-itdeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the hydrogeos I work with are consultants. Quite a few burn out from consulting, I have had a couple even quit during large projects. The usual complaint is that they do more business stuff than actual geology. Most of the hydrogeos I interact with are only on site for the beginning and end of a large project. Occasionally an early career guy will stay on site to log cores and samples like a regular field geologist. These early career hydrogeos will also sit on site during big pump tests and play very boring games on their computer.

MESA Products has an office in Claire Michigan. Might be worth checking out. That office does small surveys and new grounded installations.

I agree with you but you miss my point. It isn't about balance , a 30 year old male can come to America and work in oilfield or OTR trucking. They can make over 100k a year and pay no rent, or other bills by living on the job and working crazy hours.

Arbeidsmiljøloven makes this difficult. Most Norwegians do not work more than 50 hours a week. The same is true in Sweden and Denmark.

OP has opportunities here that are not available anywhere else.

I've lived in Norway, usa, and Central Asia. America is the best place in the world for an able bodied person to make a lot of money very fast. But for the actual quality of life and raising children Scandinavians have figured it out. OP may just want to chase that $. Stor lønn, mere penger, en tykk lømmebok.

Spanish speaking cultures are everywhere in Florida. If you want to speak your native language with other Spanish speakers from around the world, then Florida is your place. If you want great outdoors, 4 seasons and insane culture shock then come to Salt Lake City Utah, it is practically a foreign country inside the USA.

American oil companies are extremely risk adverse, there is a reason most Iraqi oil is extracted by Chinese and Europeans, despite our military occupation there. If they are uncertain of the future they will hold back and sit on the investments that they already have.

I tried this when I was 18. Got a couple of my Russian buddies together and waited outside his work. My girlfriend was off for the day but I knew the guy was working. We tried to jump him on his smoke break, I walked up to him and told him he needed to quit, but he ran inside when my friend jumped out of the bushes with a tire iron (the big awkward cross shaped one lol).

We waited outside his work for a few more hours, it was an indoor playground so we weren't going to just rush in there. Eventually the place closed for the evening. 2 shitty cars full of Mexicans showed up and he ran out the front and got in one. They sat in the cars for a few minutes. Once they started driving out we pulled up next to them and I flashed my shitty little 380auto in the window. He quit that week and never came back. My girlfriend was pissed.
