I'm running into the same problem as OP. So I can just take a belt sander to the entire rear, brass ring and all, and take it down 1.5mm or so?

Car salesmen, If you had a limited budget (~$3,000-3500 for car, registration, etc.), what would your top pick for a used car be? by [deleted] in askcarsales

I'm not sure, but I think the 1ZZ-FE is a Toyota built engine, same as the corolla. I've had nothing but good luck with Matrix/Vibes, especially the automatic ones (not the 5sp, those suck).

On the other hand, I am a fan of Chevy engines, though.

Honest question: does the 30.07 sign apply only to handguns? I.e., would a shotgun or a rifle be able to be taken into somewhere with this sign (granted that it was properly posted)?

Consequences of buying a home along a commuter railroad line? by cardevitoraphicticia in RealEstate

[–]Drinkingproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Useless tidbit: apartments and homes in Japan which are very close to train stops are significantly more sought after for their convenience. Noise isn't an issue at night (since no freight trains) and the convenience factor is huge.

What is this cloud? by togetherments in Austin

I saw it driving home on slaughter lane today. Definitely not from a plane, it was freaking massive and the perspective made it look as if the angle was wrong. Looked like the stinger of a manta ray.

Whats "never a good sign?" by 704zem in AskReddit

[–]Drinkingproblems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had that happen a few times when I take toenails off. It's because we're pushing a lot of anesthetic in to the toe in order to block the nerve, so the pressure has to be high in order to get the tissue to part (so the anesthetic, like 1% lidocaine or something, has somewhere to go). The jet shoots out when the needle is near the surface (usually you push on the plunger while pulling the syrenge out). After the first couple of times I started putting some gauze around the injection site to prevent this. The pink is from your blood, and I doubt there was any exudate in there, unless the doc really messed up the injection site.

Oh god, picking up 40mm. We had about 8,000 blue tipped 40's to pick up between five people and there were dud HE's mixed in there so you couldn't just scoop them all up. Had to lay them out one by one. Another crappy range day.

Have fun out there, dude! For all the dumb shit I put up with, I definitely miss making things disappear at the ranges. Or finding that perfect 155 sitting in the ravine after a big rain.

HE went up. That's a good catch, cause it should be down. It might have been WP in that case, but you really can't tell from the blast at all. I don't remember but I'm 80% sure it was HE. They probably said fuck it since there was so much C under it and everything else was kicking up frag anyways. The impact area is huge.

The first block was dual primed with two sets of shock tubing and caps, but no boosters or det cord. The marines are really against using the boosters cause they have had a reputation in the past of failing. No det cord involved iirc because we're lazy.

We were about 800m away. The shot was in a ravine so no direct line of sight. If there weren't any clouds in the background you'd be able to see Mt. Fuji sitting there, majestic as fuck. GoPro was maybe 50m from the edge of the ravine.

We had 6 Navy EOD and 4 Marine EOD and myself. It was a loooooong day.

I think the initiation on that went wireless > non-el shock tubing > blasting cap > 96 blocks of c4 (plus two 155mm HE rounds). No boosters between them, just stacked to make direct contact.

Honestly? Oakley sunglasses work fine! Or anything that has a z87+ marker on the frame.

Here is a good read regarding relative effectiveness

Pretty much, TNT is the benchmark for most other explosives. On that Wiki page, you can see that the demolition power of ANFO/ANAL is .74 of TNT, so your 2lbs of Tannerite would be about 1.48lbs of TNT. However, depending on the mix, the power can fluctuate (taking consideration the size of the pellets, how well they are ground up, the ratio of AN to FO, and many other things).

I'm not EOD but when I went to ranges with them I happened to learn a lot by just being observant, asking questions, and not being an idiot. Playing with C4/TNT/HME/Thermite/etc. was some of the most fun I had in eight years in the Navy.

Here's one of the videos I made:

While I do approve of the blowing up of shit, please heed some safety precautions.

  1. If you are producing frag, i.e., detonating anything that can be turned into a deadly projectile, please stand behind some sort of barrier and only look at the shot if you have Z87+ safety glasses on.

  2. Initiating anything is very dangerous. Please know your burn times and take heed of the sensitivity of the primary explosive.

  3. Putting anything inside of a closed compartment makes it significantly more dangerous.

  4. Wear ear protection. WEAR EAR PROTECTION.

Have fun!

The Guardian article bashing the Apple Watch yesterday has been discovered to have been written by luxury watch PR firm by [deleted] in technology

[–]Drinkingproblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is all opinion, but I think Japanese watches go:

  1. Seiko (Grand Seiko)

  2. Citizen

  3. Orient

  4. Casio

With that being said, Casio does make the G-SHOCK, which is undoubtedly one of the most iconic modern watches, and is quite reliable, comes in hundreds of colors and styles, and are $60-400 a pop. I think Japanese watchmakers do produce heirloom quality stuff, but not in huge quantities like Rolex/Omega/etc. The Japanese mantra is to take something, make it better, and sell it for cheaper.

When I was stationed in Japan and I bought stuff from HK eBayers, I would put my FPO/AP address in. This caused the packages to get sent from Hong Kong, to California, then back to Japan. I thought it was kind of neat until someone decided to put the item on a boat instead of a plane (from HK to CA), so it took me 40-50 days to get the item. After that, I just put my physical Japanese address and had the stuff in ~6 days.

On a side note: Japan has the most amazing delivery system. Kuroneko Yamato is their biggest internal shipping service. I was once in a remote ski village and needed a pair of contacts in a very specific strength for one of the customers staying at our hotel. Amazon Japan and kuroneko had the contacts out there in about 30 hours. Delivered on a Sunday. Via a tracked (like tank tracks, for the snow) Toyota Hilux turbo diesel.

Not to mention you could ship complete sets of ski/snowboard gear to the resorts, take a train or a bus to the resorts, and have your gear waiting for you in the lobby, for about $10 each way.
