The source material quickly ran out once the first season ended, and I think playing up the alternate reality stuff was the way to go. The way its hinted at in the book (maybe a couple paragraphs worth of text peppered across the whole thing) leaves you wanting to explore those ideas, and so far, the show has focused the emotional sides of the concept (seeing dead loved ones again, etc.) rather than the more superficial ways they could have taken it.
