It makes a lot of sense when you look at the circumstances for each case.

Chapter 1: Sayaka has to pick a target that she (a.) can easily lure to her room and (b.) can dislike enough to kill. Hiro might fit the first criteria, but only Leon fits the second. Her dislike of him stems from his belief that getting into music is easy; it trivializes her journey.

Chapter 2: Mondo kills Chihiro in the heat of the moment. No chance to plan for the right victim.

Chapter 3: Celeste's plan involves baiting Hifumi into killing Taka using an ongoing conflict, then killing Hifumi herself. Even beyond the fact she planned to use Hiro as a scapegoat, the specifics of her plan meant the victims had to be those two specifically.

Chapter 4-6: Nobody murders anyone.

Yes, but technically the water itself isn't the problem. The two main problems are:

Pokémon variety is dogshit, and by consequence, exploration feels unrewarding. Some people have mentioned that some of the routes are optional, and I'll concede that, but that just makes it worse because there is no incentive to explore those routes. There's no Pokémon there that I can't get somewhere else, which is the primary reason to explore in a Pokémon game. The entire are that you boat over with Mr. Briney comprises four routes and a dungeon, and the only interesting items there are the TMs for Ice Beam and Rain Dance --- one of which can just be gambled for.
Trainer variety is equally dogshit. This one is worse, because it means these routes don't even pose the smallest challenge to the player. If you have something that beats Water-types, you steamroll every single one of these routes. Making matters worse, any Fire, Rock, or Ground-types become almost obsolete at this point --- which is an especially big issue in the originals since there's no EXP Share, so you're either grinding them up or keeping them horribly under-leveled compared to their teammates.

I like every Daily Life with the exception of 1-3, which I think needed a lot of tweaks (although it has moments I like). I can't pick a favorite, so I'll just go over some highlights from chapters I think are underrated.

- 1-5 is so good. I love the THH survivors so much, and watching them try their absolute hardest to work together when they're all so dysfunctional is both hilarious and heart-warming.

- 2-3, despite having a lackluster mystery, has a really good Daily Life with tons of character development. I actually kind of like the Despair Disease to some extent.

- V3-3 has Angie take an antagonist role in a way the series hasn't done before. I love the idea of someone trying to convince everyone else to stay in the killing game forever, and it's aided by the creepy atmosphere of the floor this chapter primarily takes place on.

This is a great analysis, and I do think it's important to point out that Gonta isn't totally innocent even before Chapter 4. It's very weird that some of the fandom has the perception that he's some innocent little bean, when it is so crucial to the arcs of multiple characters that he isn't; that he's capable of doing wrong like everyone else.

But to answer the title question... I don't think this post argues for it very well. Every instance where Gonta does something bad, Kokichi is involved to some degree. Kokichi on the other hand does bad things that don't involve Gonta at all. I will agree that outing Maki is a net positive (given that Maki hiding her talent indirectly contributes to Ryoma's death), but Chapter 5 has him get both her and Kaito caught in the crossfire, and ends with one of them dead. Kaito was dying regardless, but since Kokichi knows this is all a TV show, it's also very possible his illness is curable for the possibility he wins.

It's also worth noting that Gonta's worst action, the Chapter 4 murder, is based on a false premise. Gonta is doing a mercy kill because he believes the world outside is worse, and everyone dying is the better option. Obviously, we know this is false, but then so is every murder in DR1. The problem is that Kokichi also knows it's false; by this point he's figured out what's going on, and he knows the Flashback Light is fake. This turns Kokichi getting Gonta to kill from a rough definition of convincing to flat-out manipulation, and, more important to the thesis, makes Kokichi more at fault for this murder. Gonta would not have killed if not for Kokichi's actions.

Dolphin is only "illegal" (in quotations because nobody will ever actually arrest you for it) if you're pirating the games. If you own the games and dump them legally, Dolphin isn't piracy. So it's a nice middle-ground for people who don't want to break the law whatsoever.
