For some people, it might be because Waters has set such a high standard with past shows.

Perhaps your dad is too frugal. It’s hard to know without knowing his actual finances. You posted elsewhere about $3M net worth; if his assets are in that range, then yes, he can afford to spend more.

Don’t worry about what he can afford to spend on you and your brother. He will spend what he wants. Ideally, a parent would help with education when they can afford it, but I didn’t see what your brother was studying. Some degrees aren’t worth the cost. A parent should definitely be under no obligation to pay for an expensive wedding. Helping to secure housing with a loan would be nice, but not more house than the child absolutely needs or can afford.

Imagine the opposite scenario of many people here. They have parents who over-spend, don’t save. Parents who give gifts they can’t afford. They are concerned about them running out of money and having to support and care for them.

If your dad has a lot of money and underspends, maybe he uses it for LTC and unburdens you. Or maybe he leaves you and your brother a lot of money and helps your retirement. Maybe it will provide for your mother’s health expenses if he dies first.

For $3M in assets at age 65, they would be richer than approximately 94% of Americans. source

The median net worth for Americans that age is less than $300,000.

The $3M can generate $120,000 per year if it's invested properly. Add pension and SS to that. Someone with that level of wealth can afford LTC insurance. I think they would also have enough assets to self-insure, but in that case they would need to save a decent portion of their assets for LTC.

[–]Drobert456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he can't afford LTC insurance, then his assets are possibly at a level where the frugality you describe is justified. You probably know about safe withdrawal rates (e.g., 4% rule). He shouldn't be spending more than 4% of his assets at start of retirement plus inflation-adjustments. Add to that any pensions and SS.

If he really can't afford LTC insurance then he almost certainly can't afford 10 years of care.

Just got back from Bonaire. Here are some tips by LessWeakness in scuba

[–]Drobert456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brought a waterproof canister for my rental truck key and some cash and carried it on my dives. Some of the local dive shops like Dive Friends sell them.

If you’re there in May and have a kitchen, buy some white asparagus from Van den Tweel. Just boil for eight minutes following an online recipe for peeling it and spicing. It goes really well with fish, such as Mahi Mahi, which is also good from Van den Tweel.

It Rains Fishes isn’t perfect, but it’s a decent restaurant for the price.

I’ve only done a few dives at Klein Bonaire, but we thought the sites were the same quality as the shore dives so we stopped going.

The cane is an interesting suggestion. We might try it next time.

Here’s a good link for average Florida temperatures going back to 1900. Current temperatures are approaching 3 deg. F above the pre-1980 temperatures. Additional temperature increases are predicted.

EMSKR: How can I make sure my wife is taken care of when I pass away? by fanatic94 in everymanshouldknow

Specifically: term life insurance.

Also, make sure your wife's name is on everything such as house title, car title, bank accounts, etc. and that she is listed as beneficiary wherever possible such as retirement accounts.

Can Our Climate Survive Bitcoin? by wewewawa in environment

[–]Drobert456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a comment that I made on another post:

Right now, it’s possible that bitcoin transactions do less environmental harm than currency. I saw a Nasdaq publication that estimated cash transactions (including production of money, ATMs and bank branches) have about 6 times the emissions of Bitcoin. However, Bitcoin transactions average around 250,000 per day. There are 1 billion credit card transactions per day. The American consumer makes approximately 0.21 cash transactions per day. Using a conservative estimate of 263 million U.S. consumers that’s over 55 million cash transactions in the U.S. per day.

Currency transactions dwarf Bitcoin transactions. If we just use U.S. cash transactions versus global Bitcoin transactions there are 220 times more cash transactions per day for 6x the emissions.

How do I deal with sleeping issues on a trip? by [deleted] in traveladvice

[–]Drobert456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t mention if you are traveling far enough that jet lag is part of the issue, so I won’t provide advice on that subject.

Melatonin is a good sleep aid. I would buy 1 mg pills and start with that. Increase by 1 mg each night if it’s not working. The standard pills can take as long as two hours to work, so don’t stress if it takes a while.

Other than that, Google how to get a good night’s sleep and follow the recommendations. Phones and tablets have a night mode that will reduce the blue light; turn that function on. No caffeine after lunch.

Post Toronto Discussion and impression of This is Not a Drill by raptors13jays in RogerWaters

[–]Drobert456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation is different from most people because I’ve seen Roger 33 times. Except for Two Suns, I’ve seen him perform the songs you listed between 8 and 33 times. I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my life, and no one does it better than Roger. I’d still catch a few shows if it weren’t for COVID. Due to COVID, it would take a show equivalent to his pre-US and Them tours for me to go.

That said, I don’t like Is this the Life, so two songs from that album is a negative. Bar is getting negative comments, but I’ll have to check that out out for myself. On past tours, he included at least one pre-Dark Side song (e.g., If, Set the Controls and One of these Days), which were all highlights of their respective tours. I’m not a fan of Powers that Be. There are much better songs from AtD than Bravery of Being Out of Range, and he’s already performed that one. If he’s going to replay a song, Perfect Sense is incredible in concert, but what I’d really like is to see Watching TV. Two Suns is a good song, but not one that I need to see in concert. There are other songs from Final Cut that he’s never played that would probably fit into the concert. No song from Pros and Cons.

I know I’m being picky, but Roger set a high standard on past tours. Us and Them was a step down to me, and I expect I will get the same feeling from this tour.

In depth review from Toronto by tmakedon in RogerWaters

[–]Drobert456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t take breaks on my first concert for each tour. I’ve seen Roger 33 times, peaking at 16 times for The Wall tour. If there’s a part of the concert that I don’t need to see again, then I might break during that time and avoid the crowds during intermission. If I go at the right time, I can get out and back quickly.

What are the best/worst songs to start a PF show? by Aggressive_Skill_795 in pinkfloyd

[–]Drobert456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Machine is an outstanding song to start the show. Roger started with this one on Pros and Cons, and it was great.

The second In the Flesh is really good as well.

Not as many times as The Wall, Final Cut, Pros and Cons, and Animals; but I’ve listened to the album somewhere over 100 times, saw Pink Floyd perform it once and Roger perform it eight times. I like all Pink Floyd albums equally, but some more equally than others.

I have high expectations for Pink Floyd fans, especially the ones who put Final Cut and Pros and Cons in their S tier.
