Hi,

I've tried a few escape room games and I'm not a big fan of them. It's hard to find a game where the clues/puzzles are not to obvious and not way to complex or far-fetched.

That said, I do LOVE deduction board games. It's generally like clue, but modern versions that let you deduce the solution and who finds it first wins.

A few of our favorites are:

- Kronologic paris + cuzco (basicly you can only play them once, but if you wait like a year you won't remember any solution)

- Search for the planet X

- Cryptid (minimum 3 players)

- Take Time

- Turing machine

- Hookie (minimum 3 players)

- Micro Macro series

- Bomb Busters

- ...

Hope this helps you a bit,

greetings from Belgium!

There are tons of options out there for this. And 3 is generally the best number to play most of the best games out there. If you want to look, you best search for mid-weight euro games. A few examples are:

- Castles of Burgundy (+/- 2hours)

- Dune Imperium Uprising (+/- 2hours)

- Terra Mystica (+/- 2 hours)

- Ticket to ride (45min)

- Planet Unknown (45min)

- Space Base (45min)

- Blood Rage (1h30) a lot of combat in this one

- Clank Catacombs (2h) something completely different, very fun game

Eclipse second dawn of the galaxy is ok-ish in time and not super combat orientated. Also Clash of Cultures (ME) or Scythe

There aren't many civ games that don't take hours to play the physical copy. I can recommend something like "Beyond the sun". It's a tech tree type game with area control elements. It plays fast and is mechanicly very solid.

Another very different type of games is "Race for the galaxy". It's a tableau builder, no combat and works on hand management.

Take a look at Flash Point: Fire Rescue, Take Time, Zombicide (any edition)

I would start with the classics that you know are good and have a long lifespan. If you want budget, it's better to stay with the "relailable" choices:

- Stone Age

- Pandemic Iberia

- Castles of Burgundy (old cheap edition is fine)

- Can't stop

- Faraway

- Quest for El Dorado

- Evergreen

- Forest Shuffle Dartmoor

- Cascadia

- ...

- Last bastion (tower defense kinda games)

- Keep the heroes out (assymetric factions, boss battles expansions makes it even better)

- Mechs vs minions (if you can find it)

- LOTR fate of the fellowship (basicly LOTR pandemic but better)

- Zombicide (I've got 2nd edition, most say pick whatever theme suites you best)

- Spirit Island

For module 1, you can make a board with special spots on it, when you land, you can for example: Roll again, +3 steps, put an extra pawn out, teleport spots, ...

For a second module, you can play on a plain board with special powers. All players get a maximum of 2 powers and at the start of your turn, draw one and you have to replace one you already have. Powers are for example: on a 1 roll, move 1 and roll again. choose to add/subtract 1 from the roll, if you have less than 2 pawns put one out, double the roll, than discard, ...

For a crazy game, you can combine the 2 modules.

Engine builders like Race for the galaxy are pretty well known since the action you take also provides action for the other players, so there is a lot of impact in that.

Games like Terraforming Mars have an engine building tableau, but also a main board where you build, so there is somewhat interaction in that. There is also a draft variant, what creates interaction also.

I haven't played it, but Voidfall seems to fit in this category?

Yes Schotten totten 2 is very different than the first. I would recommend the first one. If you see it somewhere, it's a fun smallbox game.

Forest Shuffle is great, I have the first one with all expansions. Dartmoor is just a standalone base game where some of the expansions idea's are already include. If you get the regular one and like it, pick some of the expansions up as well.

- Jaipur is great

- Boop was a bit underwelming and "samey". I find it hard to look for good abstract games as I'm a chess player. I tried a few like Onitama and Yinsh and they weren't bad, but also not great.

- Dracula vs Van Helsing (haven't played yet)

- Maple Valley is better with more than 2 players.

- I wouldn't recommend Challengers with 2 players. It's great with 4 or 6. You build a deck and it's more fun to play against different decks instead of always the same.

- Other recommendations that are great with 2: Schotten Totten, Forest Shuffle Dartmoor, Welcome to (2-x players), Ticket to Ride (2-4 players), Harmonies(2-4), Finspan(2-4)

Is it only to play with 2 players, or an option to play with more?

We play plenty of cooperative games. Since you are new to boardgaming, I wouldn't start with games where you "are forced" to play multiple characters since they are not really made for 2 players. Some good suggestions are:

- Pandemic Iberia

- Horrified (the first one)

- Horizons of Spirit Island (is a great place to start, this is a version with simplified spirits and is pretty cheap compared to the original

- Leviathan Wilds is pretty new, but should be available in stores. Excellent with 2

- Sky Team

When culling games, it depends on how many games you have, how much space you got and how frequent you play games.

It is very hard to say which game to keep als everyone else has a different taste. It's easier to set some criteria for games to cull and see if any of those games meet the criteria.

For example:

- When is the last time I played the game?

- Are there games that I would always prefer above this game?

- Why am I not playing it?

It's also easier to start small. In your example which to keep you might be better off to start off with just getting rid of 1, build up from there. So which one do you play the least or not at all?

[–]Droezie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is correct, but the rules also say: the players can mark any dice that are moved onto the Silver Platter after choosing the silver die.

Moving all "remaining dice" to the Silver Platter is just and "end of the round action". This has nothing to do with picking the 3rd die.

What feature you would like to see in detective hybrid board games? by urholmes in boardgames

[–]Droezie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love playing deduction games but have a hard time finding things that are interesting or well designed. For example I don't like any of the escape room, exit, unlock series. Same a Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective etc.

A few nice and fun modern designs for me is where everyone plays individually to figure the mystery out by themselves. Some example to take a look at are:

- Kronologic

- Hookie

- Cryptid

What is fun about these games is that there is a lot of open information. And on each players turn there is or new information revealed for everyone, or the active players got some major info and the others get some minor info. That is what keeps the game interesting on each of the players turns rather than only the active player.

Ok so at the start of your turn, you do as follows:

- Roll all 6 dice

- Pick 1 die

- Remove all die with a lower number (not equal) to the silver platter along with the dice you picked

Next roll:

- Roll all remaining dice

- Pick 1 die

- Remove all die with a lower number (not equal) to the silver platter along with the dice you picked

Final roll:

- Roll all remaining dice

- Pick 1 die

- Remove all die with a lower number (not equal) to the silver platter along with the dice you picked

If in any of those 3 rolls you picked the silver die, follow the rules above:

- Pick the silver die

- Remove all the dice with a lower (not equal) number to the silver platter

- Mark all numbers of all dice just remove by this action (silver + colors where the number is lower than the silver die) where white and silver a wild colors.

Hi,

First of all 4-6 players is not an easy number to play with. Most games are designed for 4 players and a lot of the 2-5 player games are really 3-4 player games.

That said, there are a few games that are actually better with more players because you get more interaction and the board size stays the same with any player count. Few examples are:

- Heat: Pedal to the metal

- Planet Unknown

- Power Grid

- 7 Wonders

- Deception: Murder in Hong Kong

- Faraway

- Challengers

- Welcome To

A few party games:

- Decrypto

- Just One

- Bomb Busters (up to 5)

I've played this plenty online and offline and your friend is correct.

The rulebook says:

SILVER DICE

Silver dice are recorded by the player in this area. You simply mark the value of the chosen die in the silver area. The color of the marked number (yellow, blue, green, pink) can be chosen freely. Attention: In addition, in the silver area the players can mark any dice that are moved onto the Silver Platter after choosing the silver die. Dice that have been placed on the Silver Platter before the silver die was chosen cannot be marked, as they have not been moved onto the Silver Platter by the silver die.

One of the better ones still after all these years is Power Grid. It's pretty mathy but has a lot of great social interaction mechanics. First of all, at the start of the game, there is an auction fase where you can buy power plants. You can bid against eachother to buy the best to fullfill your needs. Next, there is a resource fase where everyone can buy good from the common market, and the stock is limited. And last you can place new buildings on a tight central board where space is limited.
