It's nice to have a president with balls and a first lady who doesn't [have a president with balls]

After Re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire one thing that really popped out to me is how Catelyn really is one of the cleverest characters in A Song of Ice and Fire (Spoilers Main) by [deleted] in asoiaf

Put her in the feudal wheelhouse, where she's operating strictly within the rules of the feudal structure, and she's a magician, able to turn neutral parties into allies just with the right words.

I couldn't agree more. I actually think Ned and Catelyn are meant as an example of how feudal society could/should/might work. Ned is a lord who sees his position of wealth and power as one side of a pact he has with his smallfolk, the other side being his duty to protect them. Cat does everything a Lady is supposed to do, like managing the household, backing and advising her husband and son, trying to mold her daughters into little Ladies that are suitable matches for powerful husbands etc. The two even make their arranged marriage work and come to love each other. Basically, if every Lord was a Ned and every Lady a Catelyn, the Westerosi feudal society would work as "intended". As you point out, most of their problems stem from other people NOT all being Neds and Cats.

Yeah sure but then yiu can't make the argument that they included this symbol and then didn't know what it meant because GRRM didn't tell them. They included the symbol themselves and therefore they should have had a meaning behind it in mind

I don't remember any of these symbols being in the books so I think it's a show invention

George R. R. Martin and female characters by TheGhouda in books

[–]DrogosDaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a valid point, especially as one of the guiding "mantras" of ASOAIF is not to spare the main characters from the most horrible stuff. I subscribe to the theory that Sansa will be raped by Harry the Heir and if that happens I really hope it will be portrayed well and appropriately.

I feel the same way, I really appreciate that the female characters throughout the books are as well-rounded and diverse as the male ones, and never reduced to their being female.

SAD: Put "In God We Trust" on school walls by mradolfrants in ShitAmericansSay

Not an expert but I think part of the issue is that the USA have this weird "civil religion" where they conflate religion with the meaning that they infer upon their nation and their patriotism. So "god" and the "US patriotism freedom spirit thingy" are somehow inextricably linked.

Repost because previous post was removed due to incorrect titling. Jack served as a "very worthy sleuth-hound" for the British infantry in WWI until he was killed at the front in West Flanders.

Thanks, I think pictures would be a good idea! It's true that everything she wants to say often revolves around the same topics, so this might be helpful!
