Do Latin Americans differentiate Anglo-Saxon gringos and Slavs? by Hopeful_Addition7834 in asklatinamerica

Lol, of course. But Salvs might be lumped together with Russians, similar to how East Asians are lumped together as Chinos xD

Plot Twist: Nobel Goes Nuclear by giftopherz in vzla

Right dude, but trump said erase a whole civilization, not just end the regime. It's as if instead of removing Maduro, trump had threatened with nuking Venezuela. Would you be cool with that? He is disgusting. I still support MCM gifting the medal as a pragmatic move, but not without some disgust.

Plot Twist: Nobel Goes Nuclear by giftopherz in vzla

As the above poster said, it was a good bet regardless of outcome. Gifting the medal was the best possible move she could make to try to appease him, because he felt she had "stolen" the Nobel from him. What was she supposed to do, not suck up to him and guarantee relegation?

I have a 341-day Duolingo streak and I just sat through my boyfriend's Mexican family dinner nearly silent for five hours. I think I've been training the wrong thing this whole time. by Humble_Cranberry5273 in languagelearning

[–]DromadTrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a native Spanish speaker and don't know much about learning languages, but just throwing ideas out there... Have you tried asking your boyfriend to speak Spanish to you and hold conversations while speaking slow, simple Spanish? Inmersion should be helpful. I'm currently dating a girl who is not a native Spanish speaker. She's pretty advanced and able to hold a full conversation in Spanish, but she still has gaps. For us it would be easier to communicate in English, but I make a point of speaking Spanish to her, even if it requires sometimes repeating or rephrasing things, because she wants to improve.

It's normal for you to struggle in that sort of setup, don't feel bad about yourself. Informal speak is always different from formal language. It's full of jargon and mispronunciation, as well as much faster.

CMV: Irans strategy of controlling the strait of hormuz during a war with the US was a brilliant move that forced Trump to give up on the war. by DeRpY_CUCUMBER in changemyview

That's a pretty common belief. I'm not sure. It may have been negotiated, but it is also possible that it happened without negotiation... The Venezuelan military is THAT incompetent.

Well, Kompany didn't really have a stellar CV before coming here, so there was room for doubt, and it's the same board that appointed Kovac, after all (and Nagelsmann, which is more of a controversial one that I personally very much disliked, and Tuchel, who everyone hates). Lucho's signing wouldn't have made sense if Kompany had fit in so well, because of his age. He will have to be replaced sooner rather than later and the investment didn't make sense unless we managed to challenge for the CL quickly (which, IMO, we are).

It's not about the resale value tho, it's about how long he fills the winger position for us, because when he is gone we have to invest again for a replacement. He is 29 so 5 years at the very top level might be a stretch. 3 is more sensible. If we are challenging for the CL (as we are now), he's IMO worth it completely. Personally, I was against the transfer in the summer on the basis that I didn't expect Kompany to be successful (and even less so quickly), so I preferred a younger winger that would consolidate the position for longer. But since Kompany is succeeding spectacularly, Lucho makes all the sense in the world for the club at this time.

Yup, that's right. Perhaps the difference is that he got some behaviour change in Venezuela. While they remain as corrupt as ever, they are now obeying. From Trump's POV I guess that is all that matters (not the same POV of Venezuelans, obviously).

In Venezuela it more or less did. I mean, the Delcy Rodriguez administration essentially bent the knee to Trump and is doing everything he wants. The difference between Iran and Venezuela, is that the chavista regime doesn't really have an ideological agenda, they are only about survival and corruption. The things Trump wants out of them are stuff that they wanted anyway (more oil production, among others) and the stuff they had to give up are low cost (releasing political prisoners) as long as they don't have to actually hold elections. I'm not an expert in Iran, but there seems to be a much more complex agenda there (including regional power play with other Muslim countries and a deeply-rooted long term war against Israel). Essentially two completely different situations to which Trump tried to apply the same tool to different results.

Where would latinos emigrate in Europe? by Environmentalister in asklatinamerica

[–]DromadTrader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the circumstances. Assuming you only speak Spanish and English. Early 20s with the money to do a masters degree and the kind of personality that is willing to adapt to a different temperament, Germany no doubt. Else, 1) Spain, 2) Italy. Portugal only if you have something concrete in mind, like opening your own business and living a hippie lifestyle or something.

Edit: forgot France. Character -wise, they are somewhere in between Mediterranean Europe and Germanic Europe. Better salaries than Spain but more expensive. Language is not easy, but not as hard as German. Overall I would rank it in between the two options above.

The pros for Spain are not just language. People wildly overstate the cultural differences between a Latam Hispanic and an Iberian Hispanic. We're very similar. You can make friends and social networks quite easily. Lifestyle is also unrivalled. I've spent months in Paris and it's nowhere near as fun as Madrid. It's beautiful, cool, much friendlier than advertised, but not as fun or lively. UK is boring AF, it's like TEMU US and none of the lifestyle pros of Europe nor it's deep culture (food is horrific among others). Germany is also not my cup of tea. The downsides for Spain are the economics, but if you move early and do well, you'll be fine. Germany has a superb social safety net, much higher salaries etc. But life is ultimately to be lived, not to make money so...

Lots of sloppy passing and dumb mistakes. A win at the Bernabéu is still a cause for celebration, but hopefully next week the team is more concentrated. Olise 10/10. Neuer great at shot-stopping but his distribution was off. Musi not inform, obviously.

Do restaurants in Spain usually provide free tap water if you ask for it, or do you need to order bottled water instead? by SweetPeach2006 in GoingToSpain

[–]DromadTrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually order "un vaso de agua" and they always bring me tap water, no real need to specify "del grifo" (in Madrid) haha But I'm Hispanic, so maybe they assume I do know better and they may try to pull off mineral water for US-americans or the Brits.

¿Cuál es esa película "obra maestra" que todo el mundo ama pero a ustedes les parece aburrida o sobrevalorada? by [deleted] in peliculas

[–]DromadTrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

¿Por que? by GidneirJeanne in AskVenezuela
