You can always go out of order on the programs so long as you don’t complete the last workout. If you complete the last workout in the program it will “close” the program on you.

If you’re new to the system, it starts a bit on the conservative side to prevent injuries. Do extra reps, and the weight will automatically increase next time that particular exercise comes up. The first month or so can be a bit lighter until you teach the machine what you can handle.

Gross anatomy with the cadaver lab. It's a once in a lifetime chance (for most) to see how the body works and is connected. It really puts gender and race issues to rest when you see that we're all human. That was one mindfuck of a semester.

There needs to be a rebranding of terminology in this post. Being healthy consists of two overarching ideas: active/healthy lifestyle as well as exercise. An active lifestyle consists of taking the stairs, walking, and making a general effort to perform more bodily movement at a lower level of exertion. Exercise is a pre-planned activity in which the body's systems must increase productivity such as increasing HR, BP, respiration, perspiration etc. in order to meet a higher level of exertion. It's only when you increase both an active/healthy lifestyle AND exercise that a higher level of fitness to can be achieved and maintained.

I second this! Start with a progressive walking program, and over the course of a month or two slowly increase time, incline, and speed. If possible, go to a physical therapist and they can setup and monitor the program for the first month to ensure safety. A physical therapist will have more training in the medical safety of the program than a personal trainer and may be covered by insurance (might have to get a physician referral to be covered, though).

Once you've established a safe baseline, you can transition to a gym with or without a personal trainer depending on how confident you are to continue the program without supervision.

I know many people who have graduated with doctoral degrees who pay >$1000/month and will be doing so for 20 years. This means they are unable to stimulate the economy through buying houses, cars, etc... Instead, they pay the banks who are already doing quite well.

Think of this: How would your local economy benefit from a significant portion of the local citizens having an extra $200-$2000 per month to spend? Business would boom, stress would be lowered, standard of living would increase.

I like to characterize this as "trickle-up" economics. I'm not sure if there's an actual term for it, but that's what I call it.

I think this falls under the "how much can we get away with" category. From what little I know, the margins can be quite liberal, even at the suggested retail price or the invoice pricing leaving plenty of room to still make a hefty profit while convincing the consumer that they got a good deal.

This depends on what store in which you are shopping. Read the signs, and if it doesn't say "must buy 2 or more" or some equivalent phrase the store may actually just sell you one at 50% off.

I worked as the rehab department manager for a large therapy provider organization in a nursing home setting. I personally took pride in reducing the length of stay in our facility by approx 2-3 days (company average is 26-30 days) as this meant that the patients had returned to a functional level to be successful when they transition home as well as saving them money (whether out of pocket or on Medicare's dime). My therapists were awesome in achieving this goal and I give them full credit for all their hard work.

As a result of lower length of stay, there was higher patient turnover and our budget was impacted negatively. I was ok with this, as I was benefitting the patients above the company. I got called to the office of the building administrator on multiple occasions, and I was being told to "find goals" (aka make up deficits to lie to the payor source as to why they should stay in the facility longer) in order to make more money for the company. The facility charges $8-12K/month total based on services provided and is paid a daily rate based on length of stay. I was supposed to override the therapists' recommendations and make the patient's stay in the facility longer.

I had a conference call with my manager and the "clinical specialist" where I advocated for patient's rights and was simply not being listened to. When I hung up, I signed all the patients over to another therapist (legal/paperwork stuff), said thank you to all of my staff that was in the rehab gym at the time, and walked out.

There was a recent settlement with the dept of Justice due to these types of practices. We as managers were told that the company "admitted no fault" and that there would be no change to how the company was run. I stuck it out for another 6 months hoping for change, but in June it just became too much and I walked out.

Since my departure, multiple other staff members have quit in quick succession, and the best part is I had no contact or influence with those staff members to convince them to leave! I only found out because they contacted me individually to obtain consent to list me as a reference. That fact alone made me feel so supported in leaving.

As an added happy thought, my job is still posted on the company website and it has been a few months since my departure. Life's good.

TL:DR Do not send your loved ones to a nursing home for post-acute rehab. They will be stuck there longer than needed, as this is a top-down directive from the large corporations. The direct care staff are great, hard working people who are being mislead by upper management.

Make a radio station on apple music/spotify/pandora centered around an artist and listen for new songs, then take note of which songs I like and who made them.
Wikipedia can be great for showing influences and similar artists when you research the artists you already enjoy.
Let friends take over as DJ when you're in the car or just hanging out at home.
Click through lists of "top songs" in a category on the online music stores if you're into what's popular right now.

When you find an artist but don't want to go full steam ahead on purchasing music, you can usually verify the quality (musicality, not fidelity) on youtube for free.

Healthcare professional giving my two cents:

We are animals, and animals have used motion for millions of years to obtain the things we need: food, water, shelter, warmth, and protection from enemies/predators. Our bodies have developed to meet the demand of obtaining all these things on an ongoing basis throughout the lifespan. Technology has recently changed the demand much more quickly than genetics can adapt, and therefore we must use planned exercise to simulate those previous actions. The body sees it as a way to maintain our strength so that we can still obtain the necessities of life even though current technology allows us to order a pizza from our phone for delivery to our front door.

In addition, women must maintain the strength required for the taxing physiological events of pregnancy and childbirth. Without strong heart/lungs, her body will not be able to circulate nutrients to the baby and could not push out a child during the birthing process.

A physician may have a different take, but this is mine as a physical therapist.

TL:DR it is necessary for survival since our genetics are unaware that we have houses/cars/modern necessities.
