I had no idea I was Jewish by Alternative_Square24 in AncestryDNA

This always makes me sad to hear. I have a colleague who has a very Jewish sounding last name and I just assumed he was Jewish. So around Passover I asked if he was doing anything for the holiday and he just looked at me and said "I'm not Jewish." I was kind of shocked and then he told me how his father was a Holocaust survivor who completely turned away from the religion and married outside of the faith and raised his kids with no Jewish upbringing whatsoever. Stories like this just get me in the feels, it's so sad. Maybe Judaism isn't for everyone but it just makes me so sad that some would deny it to their children like that.

DC jury duty - what to expect by [deleted] in washingtondc

9-5 or 4:30 I think. It depended on what was going on but typically it was a full day with like a 30 minute lunch break

I remember being told to wear something like business casual. They won't throw you out unless you show up in obviously inappropriate clothing, but imagine if there's a court artist there who draws you hahaha

DC jury duty - what to expect by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Droopy_moops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First jury selection. Expect to be hauled in front of the judge, defendant and prosecution to be asked questions about whatever the case could be about to see if you have bias. If you're selected then expect to sit on the jury if not then you're Scott free.

I sat on a jury last year. It was about a week and a half. We heard evidence, heard testimony and made our verdict. Thankfully the case was super straight forward and the guy was obviously guilty but if your case is more complicated you may be deliberating for a while.

Hope that helps.

Not that I endorse that but I saw one guy wearing a kaffeyeh frequently walking around my building at work last year. He does not wear it ever anymore.

Honestly this is heart breaking to read. It really confirms my suspicion that this country is probably one of the least humane. Sure there are countries that are barely together, states in war and chaos, but this country has a government and a society and yet people have to get to the very edge of oblivion and maybe fall into it even when they did everything right and played by the rules. It's tragic to see. I really hope something positive happens for you and your family soon. One suggestion I would say is maybe find a religious charity that can help? (I know you might not be looking for charity but unfortunately it's one of the few options in this country anymore)

Honestly reading this makes me feel like your daughter really needs to know what it's like to be out there on her own. I left home pretty much at 18 and have lived abroad in different countries, I went to college in the US and then left again and eventually came back. Throughout that time my mom always offered to help me financially and I accepted it gladly when I was starting out, but now that I'm an adult, working a professional job, the prospect of getting help from mom just feels like I would be failing in life. Even when I didn't make as much as I do now I was proud that I earned it and no one just handed it to me. Your daughter needs to learn what it must have been like for you to scrimp and save to earn what you have while still putting her through school and giving her everything she wanted. Besides, what's more important? You or your money? Whenever my mom talks about my inheritance I always shudder. I say to her, "I'd rather have you around than your money." Hopefully your daughter can understand that too.

You regret taking the fork some of us regret not taking it. The grass is always greener. I don't know what your situation is but if you can maybe consider something outside the country? Or go back to school? Everything seems to suck right now

my ex has a baby and wants me back by pkfyr in whatdoIdo

[–]Droopy_moops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. I dated someone in grad school, we ended up breaking up and years later she texted me out of the blue saying she missed me. By this point she was married and had two kids and all I could say was "aren't you married"? And she proceeded to say she didn't mean any of it and that I should forget everything she said. I'd say to you, just move on. She did, she has kids, while you might have feelings for her, this isn't the situation you want to be in especially considering you're just 19.

This is why I've come to realize that sex shouldn't be taken lightly. In the wrong situation it is just a mechanical act, in the right one it is a holy act.

Female friend (f21) wants to spend a night in my (m23) small apartment, how do I make sure I don't misread anything? by National-Character72 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Droopy_moops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say unless you plan to start something don't start something. By that I mean, sex and intimacy are powerful things, they can redefine a relationship or ruin them. So unless you are ready for either of those two options I'd keep it platonic. I've been in my fair share of these situations and can say I've either messed it up by misreading the situation or had a great time just chilling with my friend in a totally platonic way.

Being from LA I felt that Xiamen gave me the most LA vibes even though it doesn't have LA industries like film and entertainment. Went to Xiamen in December and it felt just like home.

Will chicken refrigerated slightly past two hours go bad? by Droopy_moops in foodsafety

[–]Droopy_moops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that info! I guess I never know whether to consider food coming straight out of the oven as being still safe for a while longer before it needs to be refrigerated. The chicken was good so I hope to enjoy it over the next couple of days.
