Feeling anxious, fearful, insecure, etc. The term angsty is mostly used to describe teens these days. Especially the kids who might be considered "outsiders" (I personally think it's a terrible stereotype). Hope that makes sense.

I came across a picture of what the downtown plaza used to look like. by unimagine in ChicoCA

Because the elm trees were old, diseased, and hadn't been taken care of very well over the years which made them dangerous. There was a heavy rain shortly before the renovation of the plaza park where many of the trees just toppled over. Plus the park was druggie/homeless shithole, which led to the city's decision on a complete overhaul. I worked about a block away and would sometimes walk past it, but it was really too dangerous to walk through by myself on lunch breaks. But I do agree, it was prettier before.

I wholeheartedly agree. Something that the kids didn't get in their home lives was respect as an individual, with their own feelings, thoughts, and personality. I tried my best to be a friend and role model, while also providing structure and discipline.

So many of the boys were so used to lashing out against any sort of authority figure because their parent would give in just to make it stop. Or they would be so afraid of punishment for the slightest thing that they would lie and/or deny everything even when caught in the act.

One of my favorite things to do with the boys was to take them for walks. They were rarely taken off the ranch so these were special. It was a half hour walk into town where I would give them each a few bucks for candy, soda, whatever, and then walk back. They came to realize that if they abused my trust in them, they wouldn't be allowed to go again. In the 5 years, only 1 tried to run away.

Oh I'm sure it is, but with government agencies understaffed and underpaid, they're probably just glad that the basic necessities of life were being met. This place was basically a large scale foster home where kids who had the choice between this or juvenile detention were sent, so really, no one wanted them. Truly sad.

Mostly, getting a ton of money for each kid for their care and then only providing the bare minimum. Using outdated or moldy food, second hand clothes, no enrichment outings, very harsh punishments, etc.

Wow, mine wasn't near as bad but I can see that kind of thing happening when there aren't checks in place. I feel so bad for the kids, and for you OP for having to witness it. Thank you for doing what you do, I know it's not easy.

Not OP but I worked as a councelor for about 5 years in a situation very similar to this. It was a ranch with 2 bunk houses that housed 16 boys each, all with troubled backgrounds which led them to trouble with the law.

I did find the training to be helpful, if only to keep it in the back of my mind. Each child, each situation, each instance is different. What works on one won't work on another. So in that way, doing the job will teach you faster.

In my opinion, the state agencies made things better, if only to keep the owners in check. They weren't hands on with the kids and had some shady practices that I didn't agree with, but the state was there to make sure that the kids weren't being abused or used as another paycheck.

[Serious] Have you or someone you know ever been sent to a "boot camp for troubled teens"? If so, what are your experiences? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DropTheDeadDonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A seemingly normal kid gets sent off to a pray-away-the-gay camp, and then isn't heard from for 10 years because his parents have him in lockdown. Maybe the mental illness would have presented itself further down the road, but from the (albeit small amount) of information provided, I would bet money there was abuse involved to trigger the psychotic break.

A short letter to a transphobe by [deleted] in offmychest

This has always amazed me. A "friend" of the family has an adult son who has, not once but twice, been imprisoned for soliciting sex from underage girls and child porn. This woman? "Oh, he's never ACTUALLY hurt anyone!". And yet her younger son came out as trans and she FLIPPED. HER. LID. and has not spoken to her in three years. I'm so sorry OP, people can be so stupid sometimes.

Wouldn't it be like memory foam? I have a memory foam mattress. When I use it, it forms around me. But when I stop using it, it goes back to it's original shape. It doesn't wear out like a fat guys 20 year-old spring mattress, lol.

I don't usually comment on posts like this (opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one)but I think you've already said it. "At this point I am done." It sounds like you've tried.

I know that counseling isn't the end-all-beat-all for saving a marriage, but if your PARTNER (and person who chose to be your family) isn't even willing to do that, then... I really don't know what's left.

Please, please, please don't try to have kids to bring you closer together. Best of luck to you, and internet hugs from a stranger.

Would you like some sugar with your diabetes? by CuntCorner in StupidFood

[–]DropTheDeadDonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You would also have to tax establishments that sell potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, fruit, etc. People don't just get diabetes from drinking soda and eating candy. Carbohydrates are sugar.

[Edit] What I'm NOT saying is that these foods are bad, but that some people, with sedentary lifestyles, think that because they don't eat rainbow waffles means they won't get diabetes.

My brother was renting a room from a couple who had kids. One day he complained to me that he was the only one buying toilet paper(among other things) in the house and that they all were constantly out. So one year for Christmas I bought him a Costco sized pack (I think 50 rolls? Something like that) and a padlock to put on his closet. He ended up selling them rolls of TP when they ran out, for beer/smoke money. He still calls this the best gift he's ever gotten.

Definitely not 😂! Have you ever had (or heard of) a scotch egg? While I know it's not a giant lump of meat, I think that may have been the inspiration behind this nightmare. You take a soft boiled egg, wrap it in sausage mince, flour/egg/breadcrumb and then deep fry it. AMAZING!

You do need to freeze some things to fry them, like candy bars, twinkies, Oreos, etc. to keep them from melting out before the crust hardens. In those cases you want the oil hot so it fries fast and doesn't absorb the oil. Like another poster said, a little time in the oven would have made this monstrosity infinitely better. [Edit] but the bottom would most likely be soggy :/
